  • How to replace the old air valve spring in an Iwata airbrush with a new softer spring. Once the new spring is installed, this video also demonstrates how to hold the airbrush correctly for maximum control and detail.

Ok this is what I am talking about, i love my soft spring, and low rider trigger. Best graphic of an airbrush ever with that glass airbrush Dru.

How do you position your finger with a gravity feed airbrush like an HP-C?

good question, i was thinking the same. Great idea though

The only thing I could think of (haven't tried it yet though) would be to do one of those hot glue piles on top of the trigger I've seen some guys do. It would let me get my finger Hightower and away from the paint cup.

This finger position doesn't work well with gravity feed, which is why I use a side feed or bottom feed airbrush. Your option would be to rotate your finger to the side to clear the cup.... or swap for another gun.
Additionally, building up the height of your trigger results in less control, not more. Don't be fooled by those tall trigger "upgrades." Iwata actually shortened the height of the Micron triggers because they knew that a shorter throw results in more precise control.

So should we just assume gravity feed airbrushes are useless since they can't be held exactly the way you hold a side feed gun? Rotate the finger......how? I'm sorry--and with ALL due respect because you are still one of my top mentor/idols of airbrushing--but I'll stick with my two gravity feed Olympos MP-200C Microns (and various Iwatas) as I've tried side feed types a couple of times and just didn't care for them. I may not do photorealism (not that I haven't made a few attempts) but the gravity feed guns just work best for me and have for 35+ years.....well, once I switched out my Paasche VL's for Iwata HP-CH many years back anyway. I also use the taller triggers, in my case done with hot glue, because basic high school physics tells us that the longer the lever, the finer the control......ask any h.s. physics instructor, they'll tell you exactly the same, it's not rocket science.

    Spring cheap solved

With all due respect, $29.95 (just visited your site) for what appears to be a ball point pen spring is quite a bit more than it should be. Great idea but come on! How can it be worth that much? I have no need for the capsule it comes in once it's installed. No need for the tweezers once installed (a slotted screw driver is sufficient here and costs just pennies.) Please explain. I'll get one if you can help me understand how you arrive at $30 for a tiny spring. It's a legitimate question, I'm not trolling here. I was shocked when I visited your site.

Hi Thomas. Hmmm... I wonder how a ball point pen spring would perform? To be honest, I've never even tried to see it it fits into an airbrush.
Ball point pen springs are cheap because they make them by the millions. This spring is special in that the few that are manufactured are made with the least amount of strength and yet just enough to return the trigger. Everyone who tries the spring notes an improvement in control and in the way the airbrush feels. After working with the SoftSpring many people purchase a spring for each gun. So is it worth it? For professionals or serious hobby sprayers, absolutely. It's the single best upgrade for any Iwata airbrush.

That whole double action system makes no sense whatsoever. To believe to achieve any reasonable control over the air flow within a distance of 3mm or what is ridiculous, especially when in the same time pulling the trigger back to control the fluid.
I do not know what idiot came up with the idea of it in the first place but it eventually should be abandoned altogether.
