Coming out over and over is exhausting lol! 8 years ago when I started in a new job, people assumed I was married to a woman because I have a wedding band on. And it was very awkward to have to correct them, I have a husband not a wife! lol 🤣 And my husband and I have been asked if we are brothers on multiple trips/vacations. We are two masculine, bearded, guys. For those strangers we just say no we aren’t brothers. But don’t go into details since we will never see these people again and I don’t care to explain. 😂
That's why gay marriage will never work on mass. It's not straight peoples fault they don't know you are married to a guy. Saying you are married implies you are married to a female, period. There should have been a whole new concept and title of same sex couples instead of following what straight people do then there would be no need for explanations. Gay people are not straight, why copy what straight people do. Gay people should have come up with a whole knew concept for being in a same sex relationship with a much more modern sophisticated name then there would be no reason for the explanations to straights. There was no point to beg for the same as straight people as 60% of marriages fail. Marriage is so over.
As a gay guy I still don't understand why gay people "have to come out"! It's no-ones goddam business and it pisses me off that there is an expectation to disclose one's private life. yeah nah, bollocks to that and at work I was there to be a professional and do the work to the absolute best of my skills and quals would allow. Total nonsense and unnecessary and avoid any shitty circumstance at all cost because a person's peace of mind is far more important than what people think or know.
It's true, in my mind, that it's nobody else's business. But it's also true, in my mind, that as one gets to know an other in the workplace, one can find oneself wanting to develop some connection/friendship (beyond just being a colleague). This will naturally result in each person revealing more and more of who they are. Holding back on one's sexuality (e.g. allowing the other to assume that one is heterosexual) would not favor the development of an authentic friendship. I suppose it's possible to be fully successfull professionally based on one's skills and quals, while keeping all one's work colleagues at a distance (not even being open to "workplace friendships."). However, I think that over the long term, it could be difficult to be a professional success without colleagues (former, current) who feel they have developed enough of a connection to provide support/references when needed.
My personal experience you can't really change this world that has some ignorant people because it's a waste of time. Grown a tough skin, thank God for the person you are, love your family and friends who understands support you.
Back in the 1980's when I was in medical school, I attended a large party held my parents. I lady came up to me with what (I imagine) she thought was a complement and said: "You're such a nice young man, why aren't you already married?" I responded without missing a beat: "Because I haven't found the right man yet." At that, the conversation came to an abrupt halt.
Isn´t it great? Sounds a bit silly but it´s really nice; for me personally to be able to " show " people that we`re not all feminine gays! This man I have never heard about, is he a player or "just" a reporter? Either way; he´s hot 😋😋
@yogiperogy I think the point is because he's a sportsman, not a news reader or a politician. A sportsperson who younger lads can connect with. More so than to a politician
G'day Jon, I really enjoyed listening to this podcast mate here in Brisbane, Australia...Listening to Mark and his comment about always coming out is so true as in new situations that is rather prevalent. I've just joined a new charity where I volunteer and I'm now finding myself in that actual position of telling people if they ask, that I am gay....It is what it is I guess...but I enjoy your interviews very much...Cheers Ratu
It's got nothing to do with industry. I'm a language teacher living in the Czech Republic. I've been out since I was 18 (20+ years) and still, every single new student I meet asks me "do you have a wife/girlfriend?" "Did you move to the Czech Republic because of the girls?" Coming out really is a continuous (+ exhausting and exasperating) aspect of being gay, regardless of your industry.
We need more like him to come out and let people realize we are just the same as any others whether you are an athete, singer, poet, politician ! Thank you for your courage 👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹
I’ve never understood this coming out business. I never came out. I just prattle on to everyone I meet the way I talk to close friends. If they get I’m gay, good. If they don’t, tough luck. I figure straights don’t come out to gays. Why should I come out to them?
I think where coming out is useful is when you work in a very heterosexual environment as it can be used as an equaliser to certain offensive behaviour. But generally there is no point in coming out these days. Note these days. In the 80s not enough people in the entertainment industry came out which would have been very useful bearing in mind how hostile the atmosphere was. To be honest I'm still a bit bitter about certain Gay celebrities who are lauded for their LGBT+ credentials these days but couldn't be bothered to come out and represent their community at a time of need. I shall name no names.
Ye gods! Really?? Of course straights don’t come out to anyone because everyone is automatically assumed to be straight until proved otherwise. How have you not realised this? 🙄
“Never understood this coming out business”? Imagine a world where Elton John, Tom Robinson, Tim Cook, Stephen Fry, Tom Daley, Ian McKellan, Lee pace, Zachary Quinto, etc. etc. had never come out. You’re growing up as a young gay man, everyone you see on TV is straight, everyone in the music business, every artist, every author, everyone in sport, every CEO, every actor - all straight with their beautiful wives. You see nobody like you, nobody you might aspire to be like because you know that only straights make it big in the world (otherwise you’d see gay men in all of these places wouldn’t you?) and as a young gay man those doors are closed to you (unless you hide and pretend you’re straight of course). Does that make it clearer why at least some of us want to come out?
🙄🙄 Why on Earth do you think a straight person, presumed by everyone to be straight before you even meet them, would need to come out as straight? And when they meet you and ask how your wife/husband/partner is, do you answer “He’s fine thank you” or do you say “Oh, fine thanks”. Why would they “get I’m gay” unless you actually come out to them?
Very Handsome & Sweet Man!!! Very down to earth!!! "Boy Next Door"- Type!!! Somebody that I would like to hang around with!!! Obviously, I just love the accent!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰
When someone asks me if I'm married or do I have a wife, I always answer: "No, I'm still happy." If they ask me if I have children, I say: "I don't think so." This usually stops that conversation.
In the world of sports, very few athletes come out, mainly because sports, especially for men, are often associated with masculinity and the “tough guy” image. Many fear that coming out could mean the end of their career.
It’s not a statement for yourself. It’s for everyone. And saying ‘that’s none of your business’ to people who ask questions about your relationship/family status, can seem a bit rude. Maybe you should try it for fun. And it just doesn’t educate people.
So if you're a gay man and someone asks you in passing "What did you and your wife do on the weekend?", you are suggesting to never tell them the truth? What do you say instead if your motto is "it's no one's business"?
You work in a world where people are not allowed to be themselves because they are different. It's no different than someone making a racist statement in front of friends or people of that race or ethnic group.
Seems like a nice guy and I know what he means about thinking "do I?/don't I?" come out to someone when they ask if you've got a wife or girlfriend. In some ways, you don't want to make it a big thing and in other ways, you almost feel dishonest if you answer the "do you have a wife?" question with a simple "no". I think it can make you a more naturally guarded person. I find some people (eg work colleagues) never ask me personal questions as I think I subconsciously give off cagey vibes - especially when I answer personal questions with a short response.
You worded this perfectly, I feel the exact same way. Like I don’t want to ‘make it a big deal’ but at the same time feel like I’m not being honest if I don’t immediately say I’m gay.

Yes, it depends on who it is
You are so right that you continually have to come out. You do have to choose who you come out to though.
“You work in such a straight world”. Or should that be “You work in such an apparently straight world”.
You work in a world where people are not allowed to be themselves because they are different. It's no different than someone making a racist statement in front of friends or people of that race or ethnic group.
