Hold up there is definitely a social credit system in China. It may not be equally applied because for example my in-laws were from Fuzhou, one of those what they call second tier cities, does not seem to have this.
There is a martial artist Chinese influencer who I follow has definitely hit the social credit system though.
So basically that guy is someone who does MMA and he goes and he goes around and challenges the old school traditional Chinese martial arts, The so-called combat Masters that do Tai chi and so on.
Well he attracted the attention of some officials who didn't like his rhetoric and his attack on what was perceived as traditional Chinese things and so he was prevented from using or writing airplanes or the high speed rail.
I remember he complained that he had to take one of the slowest forms of transportation and stand for like 12 hours a day just to get to where he needed to go.
And while I do think it's awesome that there is this cultural exchange and that ordinary Chinese and ordinary Americans are seeing that we are actually really the same (because remember y'all what we need to realize is that it's the rich against the poor).
But this doesn't deny that they are real problems with what the Chinese government does. For example their stance towards Taiwan or the Uighurs, or the Tibetans, we must not ignore the real issues with the Chinese Communist party.

Have you guys forgotten your own history or are you too prideful to learn from it?
America has been digging its own grave for a long time. We are not in 1990 anymore, it is not as strong as it used to be, it is not even the most powerful country on earth since 2014. But its citizens dont know that because your government lies and manipulates you, and yet you keep moving with the same arrogance. Hence, the world does not respect you, and every day, it has less and less reasons to fear you.

China is not perfect, but China is perfect example of what a people-centered government should be. Providing affordable education, healthcare, ulility, housing, public transportation, etc. Everybody can benefit from the development of the country, not just the super rich. People may argue it’s not an elected government, but people forget about what we need a government for at all, good governance. If you keep electing a government backed by the wealthy, everyday people will never get a better life.

That is so inaccurate its not funny. My wife is mainland chinese, I speak and read mandarin, I have travelled extensively around china and worked there and I work with chinese businesspeople. Public transportation is about the only thing you came close to getting right - and china has extensive public transportation because of sheer numbers of people in the cities. Healthcare, you have to pay for. Its not that expensive for small things, but its huge for big things. And its not particularly good. If youre in hospital your family has to visit you to look after you. Nursing is not the same in China."ullity" I dont know what youre referring to. Housing is not great. Most people rent. And the food etc is cheap because the salaries and wages are very low for 90% of people. Just because you - a visiting foreigner - finds them cheap, doesnt mean the locals do.
China gives you a sense of freedom because the place is badly governed, its tax system is a mess, and as a result it has minimal government workers. Which means laws dont get enforced in the public interest - until they are, at which point they are savagely enforced. The chinese government system doesnt work on being accountable under law - because it literally makes the law as it goes and judges answer to the government, not the law. There is an old chinese saying "kill the chicken to frighten the monkeys". And that how the chinese government rules: it makes savage examples of people to keep everyone else in fear. And it will do that however it wants. And you will have no comeback or avenue of redress if the "law" is misapplied to YOU. China's government is not 'people-centred". Not even close. Its about crowd control and keeping the privileged - and very corrupt - members of the CPC in power. Thats its sole goal.
I love china. I love the people. And the sense of freedom in china - as a foreigner- feels intoxicating. But people should never forget that this is a fascist state that doesnt care about the individual and which will use an iron fist on you if it wants to. The ordinary chinese people ARE banned from many forms of information, and they are banned from many forms of self-expression and opinion sharing. And they know it - Even if the Wumao dont notice it. They mostly know they walk on eggshells and thats why the country seems calm. The problem is that most of these laowai never see the realities of china. Laowai - foreigners - wander around in china and they are treated delicately for the most part. But thats not the reality of China.
Its ridiculous what people are saying about china. Its not true what the US government says about China, but its also not accurate what a lot of people - like these guys - are saying about china. Im not american, and neither China nor the USA are particularly good countries for ordinary people.

The way TikTok refugees are finding out about China through XiaoHongShu ("Little Red Book") reminds me of Night Shamalan's movie, The Village. When a villager or two finally find the circumstance or courage to reach beyond the village wall, the revelation is life-changing and life-affirming.
This TikTok event is surely a Night Shamalan moment. (Or perhaps even he couldn't have thought of such a plot twist as TikTok-Rednote.)

i never used tiktok but my mom did and even she's on xiaohongshu now. i've talked to her about china a lot over the years but she's now really interested in the chinese model. many americans have become so totally disillusioned and resentful of their society that even the slightest bit of exposure to an alternative system that demonstrates a far more successful approach to 21st century human life can push them over the edge. as an american though, i personally was concerned that tons of americans moving into a chinese space would be frustrating for chinese folks but it seems to me as though many of the westerners who are visiting are genuinely open-minded, curious, and come in reasonably good faith. the chinese users deserve a ton of credit for facilitating this exchange, they've created a welcoming and decent online space that would likely have been denied to them had this happened the other way around

The funny irony in that act of defiance is that of all Chinese apps they could choose to spite the gvt, they picked the one that is the best at promoting tourism in China. The quality of content between tiktok/douyin vs xiaohingshu is completely different though, I hope those tiktokers who will stay on to create content, will follow the quality standard we already find on rednote /xiaohongshu. Nonetheless, I love what is happening, as in, American and Chinese netizens directly interacting with each other and seeing the love and friendship displayed so far. It's almost like when the Berlin wall fell and east and west Germans were meeting each other directly for the first time. I hope that this honeymoon period lasts for as long as possible.

@lxxhym oh there is but I find it much much easier to keep them away from my feed because there so much good quality content in there. Partly I think because it allows posts if just images and longer videos. You will find that there are a lot designers, artists, musician, craftmen, professional performers, putting their work up there, and I think the format in XHS help in presenting those work better then IG for example. It's also good search engine for travel to look for things to do and where to eat.
That being said, I only found the "brain rot" stuff during the last few days as I have been watching this "first encounter" event. It's also very easy and quick to recalibrate the algorithm to switch back to my preferred. It's quite responsive. Get it and see for yourself if you can find something to your taste! Hope you enjoy!

    unexpectedly and unwillingly 😂😂!!
At first I thought of it as such a negative force for not only China but for the relationship between the 2 people of Chinese and Americans! Contrary and shockingly it has brought the 2 people much closer, and created a better understanding of each other! Best of all it opened the eyes of the American people who have never been to this NEW China !!!!
I always have a saying to myself: “The more the USA government oppresses China the stronger China will become “!

I'm reminded of spontaneous fraternisation that broke out in the WWI trenches on Christmas one year. The German and English soldiers played football in no mans land. The English officers were upset at this and shot one of the Germans.

Food prices at 1/7th of that in the US??? Everything else in China is so much more affordable???
Why??? Should Governments of the high cost nations be asking "how can they reduce that wide disparities". If we need to increase our efficiencies and be more competitive, we need to educate ourselves about how to go about it. Let's forget about misinforming our own people. It's costing us lots and not getting us anywhere.

It’s an excellent location to do the video, I’ve never seen graffiti art in China and this was the first time for me to see one… it was so fun, at some point I was paying more attention to the art than these two distinguished gentlemen. Make no mistake, they totally rock, I’m a fan of both. Daniel did a great service and courage covering the hk protest (I was there, and I thought it was both surreal and painful to see what was happening on the ground and yet reading news reports in mainstream media) , and Ben is amazing when it comes to explaining geopolitics - he was the first one for me to successfully explain and highlight the importance of China’s digital sovereignty 😊
I find it quite funny seeing Ben with a smile, he’s always been with a serious face on and it’s pretty evident he finds the whole xiaohongshu situation hilarious 🤣
