  • Toby Perryman-Payne is an interior designer and has been running the hugely successful Instagram account @TobysHome for over 3 years now. He’s a podcaster with his own interiors show ‘You, Me & Design’ which he does with his husband Mikey, and if you follow Toby you’ll have seen his renovation journey doing up a dream countryside home. The curation of a ‘perfect life’, in regard to what we see about someone online, isn't to be taken at face value, as Toby tells us by sharing his experience, the dream was not always the reality.

I’ve followed Toby for a while, and I think it’s fantastic that he’s being so open about how manufactured content can be on social media and the pressure it placed on him and his mental health. I really feel for both him and Mikey, given the strain it must have caused them.

Velvet Rage vibes were definitely on my mind during the chat! Been watching Toby, and it’s like seeing someone finally let go of that ‘should do’ list and start living his ‘want to’ list. So refreshing to see someone own their truth instead of wearing society’s expectations as a uniform - but honestly, don’t we all fall into that trap sometimes? Jon, your channel is a gem! You’ve been having some awesome, real conversations with your guests, and it just keeps getting better! ❤ Keep shining!

So great to hear Toby, I’ve followed him and Mikey on UA-cam for years. I knew there’ve been tough times, so it’s nice to hear him speaking so wisely about his experience. I think I always knew the man behind the brand was much more interesting and much wiser than the beautiful images. Thanks for revealing a bit of that. Love to Mikey!

Great interview Jon. The older I get the more I see how much I've moulded myself into being what the world will find acceptable instead of just being me and to hell with whoever doesn't like that. Good on Toby for realising that early on and living his best life with Mikey.

This answered a few questions/theories, That I suspected whilst watching Toby’s online Content. I can definitely relate to some of the things Toby said and yourself in relation to the needing to try to be perfect but when we fail or fall short we feel inadequate or less than.
    Very interesting!!
Also great to find more LGBTQIA+ Content. Definitely watching more!! ❤

A new side to Toby, but also not really surprising, no one can sustain that perfect on line life, so well done on putting the cards on the table Toby, you came over as very honest

Jon and Toby. Thank You Both. Apologies for the late response and comment. ( I did an entire essay and somehow deleted! 🤣)
Yet again an incredible podcast/interview. Been following Toby and Mikey for some time now. Have a keen interest in design interiors. Equally share some of the " journey" as in mental health and anxiety... decades.
    Day to day coping.
So a " theme" I would like to focus on would be living in the country. Add in not fitting in with the " gay culture" and what being older ( decades older! ) and the gay obsession with looks and image.
I would like to see a " gay" farmer or someone from a rural community and environment.
I used to visit London and Manchester...not for me. Not visited in years and don't think I am missing anything.
Living in a small Northern market town... and having grown up in a rural community in a time when being " gay" was to say the least challenging.
However, as times have changed, " acceptable" in the rural community has changed too. Yes there is still issues and at times prejudice and the inevitable backlash .
Albeit I make every effort to fit in to the community. Not least straight friends and ( me) not being obvious. Even though my job puts me in " view".
So it would be interesting to hear from someone known for being gay yet living life to the full living and working in the countryside, rural environment.
Thank You, Toby for being so honest and forthright. Appreciated.

Toby’s accent comments are really interesting. It seems to me like he has even curated his own voice and personality. He has developed the accent od a typical 19 year old insta-girl with long flat vowels pronounced slowly.

When you breathe out ,,, don’t breathe in again,,, momentary you know what you’re going to miss ,
By which I mean the job is finished. And you missed the journey
