    Brian, glad I was able to run into you in the woods and spend the afternoon with you in elk country. You’re the real deal. It’s not everyday some one stalks into you with moccasins/ stalkasins 😉 I can attest your use of all the products / gear you discussed and I’ll end up breaking the bank this year adding to my gear to improve my backcountry solo hunter experience. Glad you stuck with it and tagged out my friend... well deserved! BTW - Thanks for the shout out 🙏 certainly was t expecting it. Stay Gritty! @brian_call

    Brian I think you've been really improving as a hunter and as a person. You faced some real challenges, but you keep overcoming them. I was a little disappointed about this episode as I was hoping to hear you discuss more the challenges, considerations, and mental game of solo hunting. This is a mental block for me that I think lots of guys have. If you could address it at some point, I think it would be of wide appeal. Also, what you'd recommend as far as vehicles and vehicle setups suited to the type of hunting you do. Keep up the great work.

    You need to do more of these down to earth story telling videos/podcasts. I REALLY enjoy your hunting videos (honestly, top notch) but these raw, admitting mistakes made, lessons learned, etc, videos are awesome. You're a stud good sir! Wish I could tag along one of these day with such a knowledgeable hunter such as yourself. Good luck sir!
    Thank you again for all the content you put together and produce.

    I do a lot of solo hunting. I have one of those showers. I also have a shower stall. Its a tent that you just pull out of the case and it sets itself up. It is great was pretty cheap too. But after a week in the woods even a solar bag is great. I bring the solar one in my pack. I set it up in the morning and by night the water is hot. I always have a change of clothes in the back country. It depends on how elaborate your camp is. I have a base camp down at the trail head. Its a small camper. I have a backpack set up I take into the back country. I carry a small day pack with me as well. I drop camp after I get in there as well. I leave all the big stuff there and use just my small pack and binoharness. This is my set up for wilderness hunting. With family I just hunt from base camp. The great thing about a small camp trailer is set up. I just level it and it is ready to go. I can hook up to it and move it really fast. a lot faster than a wall tent. I used to use a pop up camper but now the canned ham is so much better. If it gets really cold I have a furnace and a bed. You would be surprised how great a bed is after a few days of being on the ground.

    Congrats on your bull. I understand the out of state complaint. I'm in Colorado. I don't mind the out of state hunters most of them don't get that far from the roads. It is public land and everyone is welcome to use it. What I don't like is the ones that don't respect the land and run their ATV's all over it and leave their trash. That said I don't like the locals that do the same thing. Most people I know think they can't draw tags because of the out of state people getting preference due to tag prices. I tell them that the out of state people pay for most of the conservation efforts and that there is a certain amount of tags that are given to both out of state and residents. With exception of over the counter. I seem to be able to draw tags most of the time. I also don't apply for the 16 point tags and then complain I don't draw one with 2 points. I have my draw places I go and I have my over the counter places. The bull I shot last year was over the counter on public land. In an area I have hunted for 20 years. I got back to work and listened to the how I am lucky. Sure there is luck to it. But there was also 20 years of knowledge of the area. I also try to draw tags for places I have never been before. I really enjoy hunting new areas that I have never been. To me its about the new experience that make it fun.

    I am going to have to do my first bow hunt solo. I cannot find anyone who is willing to hike into the the back country and hunt. No one I know is in good enough shape. I am 41 years old my friends all got older while I got stronger and better lol. I am still a tad worried about hunting alone though.

    once again, wonderful stuff! We need to get Utah to look at changing the dates for archery elk. They make the hardest hunt during the worst time of year. All other states open the first of September and run to the end. Keep the pod casts and videos coming and I'll do my best to stay gritty!

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Dustin! I agree! Utah is STRANGE! 🤷🏻‍♂️ But CO, ID, WY, and MT offer great elk hunting and they’re all just a day’s drive from Utah. The downside is the out-of-state cost-but it’s worth it in my opinion.

  • @iddddaduncan

    Even if harvest numbers don't change with more hunters the Elk do become very educated and do change the way they respond to calls if the do at all. Hunter numbers do affect the quality of the hunt whether you want to admit it. Idaho was overrun by hunters this year compared to even a few years ago.

    • @bradwhunt
      @bradwhunt 4 роки тому

      iddddaduncan this is true, but I only spent 4 total days elk hunting. 3 different areas and every day, either myself or my friend, got a shot. We both ended up getting elk. Northern Idaho is different, but central and southern Idaho, elk are every where. I don’t know you’re whole situation, but too many hunters isn’t a valid excuse in my opinion. Again only my opinion. Out hiking/hunting them. Going further than them, harder than them. It will work to your advantage and the encounters will happen. Even as a professional caller, I don’t call a ton because the elk are educated. Stealth mode is the best thing out there. I try to be just like the wolves I’m also hunting. Quiet and effective killers. Good luck with any other hunts you have and I hope elk season is better to you next year!! Take care my friend.

    Have you ever heard of the ElkNut, Paul Medel? He has a website, but more importantly an app for $10. If you want to understand all aspects of the elk language, get the app. It is absolute gold! One tip from the app, use a bark, which he calls a nervous grunt, to stop an elk DEAD IN THEIR TRACKS. Way more effective than a cow call. The app even goes over how to make all of the various sounds. Good luck this year!

      Absolutely! The only caveat is that I bought these for hunting cactus country in Arizona and Alberta CA. These Stalkasins will not let cactuses pass through them. I don’t think swim shoes are gonna stop a cactus. But if you don’t hunt cactus country then swim shoes are probably a pretty good idea.

      All the deer I’ve shot with my Valkyrie arrows have died within 40 yards of the shot. They bled quite a bit. The arrow fletchings weren’t that bloody though-not sure why? The head or the entire arrow is almost always buried in the ground. They’re devastating arrows-but they’re especially useful when things don’t go as planned. The punch through brush, crush bone and buck the wind. 👍🏼
