  • Hello everyone, welcome back to another video. This time we take a look at the new NETGEAR NightHawk M2 Mobile Router. Claimed to be the fastest mobile internet solution on the market with speeds of up to 2Gbps. Connect up to 20 devices to the small, compact device.
    We were sent this device whilst we were in Spain and can say hand on heart that it worked much better than both Kate and I's network provider did. Supplied with a 3 sim, we were able to use up to 15Gb of our data allowance for no additional data roaming cost.

    Good introduction, interesting to see how you got on in Spain. As for the WiFi timeout, you can disable it in settings.

      Dang it, wish I had found that! Cheers Bob. In Spain it was brilliant, I had two bars of 4G on my iPhone (X) on Vodafone at the campsite, it was useless - unusable in fact, I don't know what was up with it. We had the same signal strength on 3 and it was rapid. In Ireland the week before last, it was as good and covered under the same EU umbrella of being able to use data like back at home. It worked well in France too for our return leg home. Andy

    With the free sim card netgear provide, do you have to pay for the data? Is the data limited per day/month? Sorry might sound a bit of a silly question just a little confused

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. It all depends on what quality you watch the video in.... the higher the quality the more data it will burn through. For a 1080p quality video on YT you’ll be going through 720MB per hour per device. Netflix will use 1200MB or 1.2 GB per hour, in 4K that figure rises to 7GB per hour. The M2 does show you how much you’re using in real-time. Hope this helps. Andy

      MakeWayWithTheMorleysthanks is Andy. So using one of these can be quite expensive then. We came back from our family holiday which was Longleat caravan park and there was no phone signal and as you may know the clubs WiFi isn’t that great when so many ppl using it. My kids had a mini melt down lol. So we have been looking for this type of thing for the next family holiday next month. Can you get a unlimited data sim ? We have been to the car phone where house shops but they not very helpful.

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys
      @MakeWayWithTheMorleys  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, the cost of using an M2 will depend upon the price per MB you pay for the SIM you put into it. Just like your phone. The advantage you've got using the M2 is that you can connect more than 5 devices to it, unlike a phone... However, the more devices, the more potential data you'll burn through. You can alter the resolution of the videos your watching of course, meaning you'll use less data.
      Longleat is a bit rubbish for signal. This device only works with the signal it's receiving, if you're in a signal blackspot then unforunatately there isn't much you can do. You can use any SIM card from any network provider. I'm using 3, as it was sent with it. Have a look at broadbandchoices.co.uk - most SIM cards break into 3 sizes, you'd need a Micro Sim size. Andy

    Much much cheaper to use your personal hotspot on mobile phone and pay for extra data on few occasions when you need it.
    We watch tv off it all the time and always works and can be added when dats runs out.

    Hi Andy I presently use my mobile phone as a hotspot and it seems to work just fine for the two of us I'm interested in this but find it hard to see the advantage if you need another data plan confused what It's all about

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys
      @MakeWayWithTheMorleys  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Greg, thanks for watching - it does require another Sim card, be that PAYG or Contract. For me, PAYG is most likely to be the best option, for us to top up when we need to unless a contract would allow us to roll our unused data over onto the next month (I haven't looked into it as yet). One other thing, if you're travelling outside of Europe where data roaming might be expensive from your current mobile supplier, there is nothing stopping you from getting a cheap local SIM to put into the M2 - where data charges might be significantly less. Hope that helps. Andy

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys

      The Netgear M2 is your own wifi router. It uses a SIM card like a phone, you can buy SIM only deals for just data, see broadbandchoices.co.uk for some examples. If you're happy with what you've got and you have unlimited data as part of your phone contract then that is fine. Stick with what you know. Neither Kate or I have unlimited data options on our phone contracts, so this is useful to us as we can use the data from the SIM in the M2, also we will have a growing hunger for data as our kids get older :)

    The price is a bit steep. I touched on MiFi in one of my caravan videos. I got my router for free (it costs about £40 to buy it). I bought a Three data SIM with 12GB preloaded for £35 from Argos but the data top-ups are expensive. I've now got a data SIM from my ISP (BT) which works out cheaper. I've also got a HooToo TripMate Titan which I bought purely on the strength of Dan Trudgian's review and combined with my MiFi router they do most of the stuff the NightHawk does for a fraction of the price. The only other issue is that video streaming uses up a LOT of data so you would need an unlimited data SIM.

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys
      @MakeWayWithTheMorleys  4 роки тому

      Yep but it is, can't deny that but the spec is spot on. The data package needs to be good though if you're doing a lot of streaming, I might have to look into an unlimited one! Thanks for watching, Andy

    Hi Andy. The big question that nobody has been unkind enough to ask you is..... Would you personally buy this product with your own money? It may be fast but I have always had success using a standard mifi unit at a fraction of the price. I appreciate this does more under some circumstances but who realistically needs to connect 20+ devices when on holiday, or even at home for that matter. Good video but not for me. Cheers Steve.

      @MakeWayWithTheMorleys  4 роки тому

      Hi Steve, thanks for getting in touch. Hey look, I don't mind people asking me such questions. The price is high but I would buy one, I might wait a while to see how prices go but actually we do need a mobile data solution. Neither Kate or I have unlimited data on our phone contracts, everything is using more data, having something fast, reliable (unlike most site wifi) and secure is advantageous to us. Thanks for watching. Andy

    Is there a difference in speeds by using data only sim and mobile phone calls & data sim
    Because I have noticed you can get unlimited data with calls cheap where data only sims you can get only 40-60 GB data for £30 -£40 month and only sky rolls data over but again you can only get 25gb data for £25
    So hoping it won't make difference in speed if use unlimited call &data sim
    It's only for TV to connect xbox one as hubby can watch sky go netflix and Amazon prime

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys
      @MakeWayWithTheMorleys  4 роки тому

      Hi Tina, I can’t speak for individual phone networks and speeds. They would be better placed to do so. However, I have a Smarty PAYG unlimited, data only sim which tops up automatically each month. I’m about to change to a 12 month 30GB per month data only plan, as this is more than enough data for our current usage and is about £10 p/month.
      Please note, the data speeds will be dependent on network coverage. Ie, if the signal is only 1 bar of 3G, this won’t be as fast as 4 bar 4G. Andy

      Hi Andy getting the netgear 2 but also going with bt for sim as with being a bt broadband customer and have halo I can get sim only with calls &texts plus 100gb data but also get 100gb data free so will have 200gb data each month and with discount £5.00 so costs just £20.00 a month this is a 12month contract
      plus 4g is ultra fast 4g which you don't have to pay extra for

    380 quid plus whatever sim package you choose . I think not.
    Three can do unlimited sim for 20 quid month so why not just tether your phone ?
    Can’t see anyone having or wanting more than 2,3 or 4 devices connected simultaneously on a site
    I think we need sites to up the WiFi infrastructure considering pitch prices on some of them - been on sites where the only WiFi is in reception or adjoining hut - what good is that?
    Good to see you back on screen Andy even if it’s just a corporate freebie promotion video

    • @MakeWayWithTheMorleys

      Howard, thanks for your thoughts. The 20 devices thing is high and I agree it is unlikely you'll get anywhere near that on a caravan site but it isn't just made for that purpose. Good Wifi infrastructure on sites as you know is hard to come by and as such this fills that void. Site fees are a whole other argument which is an interesting one to me, maybe I'll I do a video on that some day.
      The first video in our Spain series will be hitting the tubes on Thursday morning. Thanks for watching, Andy
