@The Charismatic Voice Thank you, I was tired of hateful comments about her singing by people who don't understand her singing and deliberately or out of ignorance disdain SoHyang. Please what you think about the critics on you tube comments to her belting etc...
My wife showed this to me a few years ago when I was going through a particularly bad patch of PTSD, anxiety and depression (yes, I'm a vet). She told me to imagine it was her singing it to me, she just held me and we listened... There were tears, as there were tears watching your tears in your reaction. There are no words to describe how I feel about this rendition.
That's the reason why So Hyang continues to sing with no social media presence. She only wants to give some help to the people who is in troubled or depressed with her angelic voice and songs. I hope you will get well and be happy with your precious wife.

Wow! Unbelievable. She has the butter smooth timber of Karen Carpenter, the voice control of Celine Dion, the perfect pitch upper register of Mariah Carey and the gospel soul of Whitney Houston all rolled into one. I don't think I have ever heard a single singer have such a perfect singing voice. I loved your reactions and analyses of the song too. What a treat!

She's usually dubbed as Korean "Mariah Carey". I strongly oppose to dubbin her as such! She is just So Hyang, unparelleble to any of female singers including Whitney Houston and Celine Dion :)

uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up
She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol
It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be
in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician
and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.
So Being a Cancer survivor And still gets sick from Time to time. But is an Amazing Artist
who gave up a Kpop career to sing for the Lord and for the Love of Music instead of stardom.
She learned English as a Child from Disney Movies, which inspired her to Write two of her
Books...(both Published and there are more).
Also And Publicly thanks Mariah Carey for teaching her everything she Knows about Music ...

I'm a lifelong metalhead. I have to say, this is one of the best and most moving performances I've ever seen. It's like she pulled me into the song and I didn't want her to let me go. Phenomenal.
Hope that sensation of her pulling you into this song continues for the rest of your life. She is a statement of faith in times when it's so difficult to have faithful and yet testimonial life to your faith!
SoHyang is difficult to compare with other female singers in the western world. She lives her message. Modest, down to earth and without looking for special fame. No social media presence, no record deals. If you really want to know more about her, you have to watch the numerous videos of her appearances in churches over the years. The real Kim So Hyang.

This performance is timeless. Koreans’ conveyance in singing is really out of this world. Sohyang’s every syllable and note is precise, well modulated and thoughtfully sang. Not to mention the dynamics. The softest breathy sigh and powerful goosebumps inducing high notes in one performance. I’ve watched this performance over the years, and it still leaves me breathless and in awe all the time.❤️
The amazing quality that makes Sohyang's performances out of this world is not even her singing, it's her. She's an angel. The way she makes us connected to her performances is just so beautiful and so sincere. People can hit high notes and have technical superiority but Sohyang dedicate her singing with such sincerity and humility that hits you right in the hearts every single time. This Women Sohl Hyang is simply Amazing words are not enough to express her... Hi Elizabeth, I loved this performance. As a young child, I remember hearing this song on the radio in the early 70's, and 50 years later, So Hyang did an amazing job singing one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. She has an incredible voice and her control/technique was excellent. Thank you, Elizabeth, for bringing back some wonderful memories of my childhood!!! 💙

She is magnificent. I cried AGAIN! She works her way up through Mariah and Whitney modes, then there's that moment when she goes full Aretha, and I melt. Finally, when you're a shivering, blubbering mess, she's like, "Hold my beer," [Set floodgates to 'Open'] AFTERBURNER BELT MODE. Whimper. Why is this not on continuous replay on every station everywhere?

Glad you re-visited So Hyang. She is one of the great vocalists of our time and doesn't get near the exposure she deserves.
I remember seeing her at church back in 97. She is a seriously devoted gospel singer and she made bridge over the troubled water into a classic gospel tune. Interesting when I watched the interview of Paul Simon, he got the inspiration of this tune from the gospel as well.
Wow, what a treat for our ears. Pure, refined sound with incredible control. When many of the so called divas belt it's often uncomfortable to listen to because it lacks musicality and refinement, So Hyang is the new reference standard in my opinion, she's beautiful too !
Always eager to hear another reaction of this powerful and heart-touching performance by Sohyang. The unfortunate wait is long but worth it. This performance by Sohyang grabbed my heart at the first bar and never let go. Her voice became an organic part of my heart and sought out feelings long buried under the muttering noises of our daily routines. This performance had so much impact on me and will be part of my treasured memory for life.
It's somewhat ticklish to witness the excitement you feel in listening to Sohyang's mastery here. For a vocal aficionado, watching this performance is like a candy lover going on a all-paid visit to the Godiva factory. It's a mind-numbing experience in overindulging in and feasting on the sweetest treat our imagination can conjure up. Love seeing how you process so joyously Sohyang's notes through the vocal pedagogy.

Sohyang sang "misty" from Ella Fitzgerald. She said in various interviews that she's greatly inspired by her. Look for Begin Again live version. You won't be disappointed. I've never heard high soprano sing that song that good, give Ella the justice.

As several reactors have said, Mariah has left the building. There is so much to absorb when listening to So Hyang. Thank you for describing all the details for me. I love how absorbed you get in her music and express it through facial expressions and laughter. I feel the same way after 100's of listenings. Song has a very personal meaning to me. Not meaning any disrespect to Mariah or Whitney, but So Hyang is a better singer, but she's also better than everyone else. My first time hearing her, thanks for the video. I've never heard anyone with better pitch, there wasn't anything in there that was even remotely close to a weak note, all those runs were absolutely perfect. She also made all of us guys out here fall in love with her when she spoke the last little bit, and grinned. It was like watching Heifetz play a violin. You know they're human, but you can't believe anyone can be that good.

Here's my recommendations based on song style:
- Everyone (Korean and English mixed) : 7 minutes live. Mid belting for more than 60 % of the song an waring that it is one of thr most emotional songs from her and she said it was the most difficult song she ever sang. Very different from 3 songs you reacted.
- I will always love you (Whitney Houston version) : Outdoor live, only with guitar and keyboard. If you want to react focus more to her vocal technique without much belting.
- Never ever enough (Loren Allred version) : Music video, I don't want to spoil you but you can find her ability to harmonize it by herself.
- Mona Lisa : From The king of masked singer (Yes, this show is originally from South Korea and sold copyright to US and other countries). You will be able to tell it is her after 1 second. f you want to see her singing Rock , this is it. Sang in Korean.

Thank you. Your reaction video heighten my awareness and eventually to a Sohyang concert in April 2023 during my recent work assignment in South Korea. So many great performances and continuous OMG moments.
Thanks for your reaction on this masterpiece Elizabeth. I believe I suggested it on both your previous SoHyang reactions, as it is a clear example of what she can do, arranging a great western masterpiece. I think we can agree she respected the original message and added another, more religeous aspect to it, she is glowing when this aspect exists in her songs (check her Holly Night or Amazing Grace renditions to witness that).
I think this performance was before her repeated pneumonias but she is mostly recovered nowdays (you can check her latest Arrirang performane on King Singer to evaluate her current status).
As I have mentioned before she communicates the lyrics so well, so when I hear "I will lay me down" I have look down carefully not to step on her.
For your future reactions on this amazing singer, song maker, arranger, music teacher, children book writer, religeous book writer, and amazing personality, I would suggest:
"I Will Arways Love You", "Misty", "Day Day" from KoreaBeginAgain, "Hug Me", "Where Are You" and "Fate" on the last 3 try finding versions with English Subs.

I completely get the first minute of So Hyang performance of BOTW. Just incredibly delicate and she interprets the original song as it should be before all the fireworks commence. A really beautiful singer. Just discovered in past 2 days. We really have to support genuine talent like this. Hope she stays well

Sohyang is a singing angel and gospel.
So Hyang is GREAT, however what makes this song sooo special is the arrangement which she writes / coordinates. It is, by definition, a southern American gospel arrangement, and I believe that this performance was actually part of a church service in Korea. Many church songs are arranged this way. Three components are needed for an epic performance: great song, great voice, GREAT arrangement, with the latter being super-critical. There are about 3 additional layers of stylistic "hook" (syncopation, up-tempo, rich orchestral) in this song as a result which is splendidly captivating. In addition to So Hyang's masterful performance is the equally MASTERFUL arrangement. Solid stuff. Btw, that is a G5 she is hitting full / mixed voice. Impressive with unbelievably-technical skills on full display. Well done!
I'm not listening to it live over there. However, Sohyang's voice goes beyond simple emotions to the soul. Sohyang performances are almost beyond human standards.
I don't much care for runs, even when masterfully done. But her talent cannot be understated. The control is magnificent, and I am in awe.
Her runs are beautifully composed, better than many other vocalists, and they heighten the emotion of her performance.

I’m pretty sure this song was given a “Gospel twist” at least 50 years ago. Simon himself has stated that he was trying to write a song with a Gospel feel.

What I was trying to allude to (and it might not have come across clearly) is; that, Sohyang's arrangement and the intensity of this performance, gave it a "full" gospel vibe, whilst still keeping it within the context of the original message, i.e. to provide comfort, hope and inspiration. That is what I personally got from this performance.
@@armenoid2278 You missed my point. Merry Clayton did a version 50 years ago that gave it a full gospel vibe, as did Aretha and several others including Elvis Presley. There’s nothing new or different about So Hyang doing that.

Yes! You finally got to this song and performance! She truly pours herself into her singing . This was the first song I ever heard of this woman and after that Arirang Alone (my favorite) floored me and cemented the love for her.

I thought I was hallucinating when I first heard this because I couldn't believe that such a fantastic singer wasn't a household name all over the world!!
I know,having seen all 3 of your reactions to her,that you love her belting in particular so I thought i'd suggest something quite different & bang up to date.
During the pandemic she has been involved in a project/TV prog called 'Begin again Korea', which she initially got in to because someone became sick & she was asked if she would step in,and thank the lord she said yes!
The show is basically a small ensemble of well known(in korea) singers & musicians who basically go in to public spaces & work places & put on small acoustic sets to very small crowds (social distancing), they are essentially 'busking'. The first performance by sohyang from this series to be released was her amazing stripped back rendition of 'i will always love you'. Although I have watched sohyang performances 100's of times,I was really blown away.not only did she look fantastic,she sounded better than e er,which is something I never thought i'd say & apparently she has had a prolonged period of relatively good health & oh boy! does it show. She manages to sing many genres in this series,even rapping in a song called 'day day' & you could choose any song,both english & korean,from this series & you will be more than happy,but another performance of note that is something different is her performance of Ella Fitzgerald's 'Misty', a pretty short offering but wealth worth your time. I would also suggest that even if you dont get around to 'reacting' to the songs from this series,PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do yourself a favour & just watch them for your own personal enjoyment. There are many times when the camera's showed the audience in tears etc, its a bit hard to notice anything else because they are wearing masks but there were also many times when her fellow performers,who weren't wearing masks,can be seen looking at her,mouths open in amazement & some tears. I think this shows how good her performances were when her fellow performers were shocked at & in awe of her vocals.
Give these 'begin again korea' performances a try,you have nothing to lose & so much to gain. Thankyou
