I don't know an F sharp from an A and I have no idea how and why the vocal cords do what they do. I'm just a 66 year old who's listened to music all my life and I DO know when I hear a world class singer. This is an absolute vocal masterpeice. Sohyang is right up there with the very best female singers ever.

She grew up singing gospel, since she Christian. She also a cancer survivor and has been married since she was 20, her husband plays the drum in a band. She also does all the arrangements on her songs. The last line in Korean ( where she whispers she said who will comfort me, all of you. Also after this performance backstage someone wanted to interview her, but she was crying
There are a few amazing divas in the world; however, Sohyang is another level. master of voice! No one can sing like her in this controlled every note. Don't even think about comparing her to other female great singers because their voices are better or unique. Overall, Sohyang is the only singer! Period!

6:06 this song always makes me cry, I'm studying korean so I understand half of the lyrics....but you don't need to understand it, only with the feelings Sohyang transfers with her beautiful voice is enough
This song is one of the most famous contemporary Christian song in Korea. In lyrics, "I" is literally Jesus and "Everyone" is all of us. And usually Sohyang herself arranged these performances and bands/sessions are top notch musicians in Korea. And sometimes Sohyang randomly showed up in local church then sing couple of songs, and when she performed on national tv then she took whole nation to church everytime. What a legend she has become.
I’m a metal head at heart. Not only am I completely uneducated on singing, I also have no real interest in it. However, for whatever reason, watching you react to this brings me such joy and light to my life. Thank you so much for doing this for us!

Absolutely beautiful beautiful performance here. Wow, I thought Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Arirang Alone or You Raise Me Up got me teary eyed but no, this one here definitely hit me. Music transcends language indeed. That quiet acapella style moment she did where its her presence and her voice singing to the Heavens - words cannot express that kind of moment. If you don't shed some sort of tears - you need to work on your humanity. Love gospel music in all its emotional ranges.

This song fits Sohyang so well that she wants to sing it too. Sohyang poured everything she had into this one song, all her emotions, techniques, messages, and life curves. As a result she made it into an epic. The key to the lyrics is as follows: If I'm lonely, who comforts me? It's you(everyone), I'm your friend. I'm your eternal song. She rearranged the entire song and added gospel part to highlight this message, which may sound too much and deserved to be judged by over-singing, but it's quite understandable when you think about the ups and downs of her life and her strong beliefs that she maintains consistency. I'm sure she knew this was a little too much, but she would have really wanted to do this style.
Only a handful of artists come along in each generation to bless us and So Hyang is definitely one in my generation. Great reaction. Take care.

I love her beautiful voice, with good singers it's so that if you see such a huge talent, you don't want to listen to the weaker ones.
Great reaction, and the tears flowing during the acapella section were spot on. A few random notes about this performance:
o She said afterwards that it was the hardest arrangement she's ever attempted and that she spent most of her time figuring out where and how to breathe.
o She didn't win this episode and has never performed this song again.
o She had an extended period of poor health after this episode dealing with complications of pneumonia and hepatitis. Her perfectionism prompted some soul searching about whether she would be able to continue singing. Eventually in the depths of her depression she said that God spoke to her and asked her a simple question "If you spend all of your time trying to be the perfect singer, where do you have room for Me?" This was immediately followed by her record breaking run on King of Masked Singer while still battling the effects of her illnesses.
This performance is ethereal, I cry every time.

Not the sort of music I normally listen to. Still, So Hyang is so dang impressive (So Hyang impressive . . . lol) and has so much beauty and emotion in her voice that it is impossible not to enjoy he performances So Hyang's says her goal is to comfort people. Elizabeth says she wants to spread joy. Even my grim, frostbitten cynicism is no match for these two ladies. Feeling very joyously comforted this Monday.

So much to learn from your analyses for someone like me who is interested in singing and musicianship.
I fully agree that popular singers often use runs as means of showing off/coloring rather than honest emotional accenting of the message of the song. Sohyang is one of those that almost never does that. She means every run as an expression of the emotion behind the lyric. She is a true interpretive singer.
I was very pleased when you said near the end that, in terms of her endurance, she sang like two opera arias. I have never heard that sort of a direct inter-genre comparison before, and coming from an actual operatic performer, I consider it high praise for Sohyang!
Also appreciated your comment on composers and how they add runs to show different types of vulnerable or rollercoaster emotional states, as well as Sohyang using those techniques as an emotional expression from her core, and not a mental on/off switch for technical reasons only.
You are one of the best on UA-cam. Keep being you and I look forward to your 1 million subscriber party not too long from now.

It makes me cry all the more more that you are so emotionally moved by this vocal without having the impact of the beautifully written lyrics and meaning behind it….credit to Sonyng’s musicality that she is able to transcend language barriers and affect people to this extent…compel them to appreciate music on a level that allows you to feel as hard my girl her does…me too!

It's such a delight to watch this video as your joy is contagious. How giddy you look when Sohyang does a lot of acrobatic vocal repertoire makes me feel like you're in a magical land he he he he he...I've been watching Sohyang videos for a while now and she touches me so much on so many different levels.
I love that she's flipping between English and Korean. I grew up speaking 4 languages and I picked a 5th (French) for my studies. I don't think people realize how difficult it is to switch between languages on a dime especially when the languages are so different from one another.

Great reaction Elizabeth, I have been eagerly awaiting your reaction to this song, I love to watch you watching Sohyang. It’s hard to believe that anyone would have anything bad to say about this beautiful soul but they are out there & I know they’ll be criticising this performance!!! I appreciate that music is a matter of personal taste & if you don’t like something, you don’t like it, that’s life, but to go out of your way to say things like ‘ she cant sing,she can only scream, she doesn’t transmit any emotion, is just ludicrous. It’s always from the same people, I think it’s just jealousy, just blinded to the fact there are actually other great singers in the world besides your particular favourite, but the last person you could level all those bad things at is Sohyang. All I say to these people is that to say that you hate Sohyang so much you spend an awfully long time watching her video’s. You just have to ignore these people as they obviously don’t know jack all about great vocals, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that of all reaction video’s of Sohyang I have never come across a vocal coach/singer/musician, someone who understands music,like yourself,that has had anything other than good things to say about her.
As you said,this is a feat of endurance but it looks effortless to us watching but Sohyang herself has said many times that this was the hardest song for her to sing, primarily because of a lack of places to breathe, but you would never guess that by looking at her.
As you said, not only is she is an amazing singer, but a published author of fiction too & to add to that she still finds the time to do her ‘day job’ as a university lecturer.
If you want to see another side to sohyang, away from these big production numbers for TV, I suggest you bring yourself back to recent Sohyang & to some of her offerings from during the pandemic. Firstly a rarity for Sohyang, a music video, her (amazing) rendition of Never Enough’. I know you like live performances but we all know Sohyang could sing it just as well live if she wanted to but I think you really enjoy not only the vocals but the concept of the video, which is really clever. Alternatively there are a whole series of more acoustic performances under the banner ‘begin again Korea’ where she manages to have a go at numerous genre’s inc. rapping (yes! she can rap!! In a song called ‘day day’) an emotion packed rendition of Jason mraz’s ‘I won’t give up’ & ‘if I ain’t got you’ by Alicia keys, along with many many more,both English & Korean but two of the stand outs, for me at least, which I think will excite you are ‘I will always love you’ by Whitney & Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Misty’. I am so used to been taken over by goosebumps when I hear Sohyang sing but I’ve never had them as quick as I did when she opened her mouth in tribute to Whitney & all I heard was “if I”, no kidding, 2 tiny words & I was gone,that’s all it took for a shiver to run right down my spine!!!!!
Keep up the good work Elizabeth, Sohyang brings me great happiness & so does watching you watching Sohyang.

Out of the dozen or so shots of the audience, not a single one was ever close to enjoying the music as much as Elizabeth was. Keep showing us all what un-ironic enthusiasm looks like!
You were not in the same room with them when she was singing. I see the audience 'overwhelmed' by the spirit of music rather than enthusiastically enjoying s song. Please avoid expressing your feeling by criticizing others' facial expressions. In some cultures, people get rather quiet and seem to be 'ironic' when deeply touched.
If you watch your singing Love Poem you will see people using her music to help them pray. She's something outside my understanding and I am so glad to be on this planet when she is here
