- Two Late Nights aired on September 25, 1986. The first was a new show that broadcast in place of the Tonight Show, which had celebrated its 24th anniversary earlier in prime time.
The second Late Night followed in its usual 12:30 am slot; it was a rerun from February 17, 1986, but with other voices replacing everyone who was on the show.
Peter Fernandez was the voice of Dave; Earl Hammond as Paul; Corinne Orr as Raquel Welch; and Maya Danzinger as Sandra Bernhard, with LN writer Randy Cohen supplying additional voices.
Merrill Markoe in Time magazine, May 15, 2015:
"'The Dubbed Show' was an idea by the brilliant Randy Cohen who decided to try to bring something new to a standard re-run. The show remains the same in all respects except one: It contains a perfectly synced new audio track dubbed by the people who dub foreign movies into English. To make this happen, Randy painstakingly created a script of the original show to give to professional voice-over actors who would dub it from English into other English. Watching Dave and his guests say the same things, only in slightly different voices, made me question everything I ever knew to be true in the universe."
I remember well how hilarious and troubling this was at the time.
Your posting of it and other crucial, deftly edited early Letterman videos is deeply appreciated.
Huge kudos to Don for providing this to everyone!
Pure genius now, let alone in '86. Carson special and two Late Nights in one evening. Good binge for the hardcore fans back then.
Such a great idea and wonderfully done.
Oh my god. I remember watching this on tape the day after. To this day, I had no idea why the audio was all messed up. And, this was one of the earlier episodes I watched, which meant I barely knew this was not their voices. Wow. just Wow. You are straightening out childhoods, Don!
😅
Very cute idea, but the British “Dave” is not nearly as funny!
I remember watching this live in 86 and thinking joint was especially strong.
When Dave said "There is no off position on the genius switch", he really mean it
I had the great honor of meeting both Peter Fernandez and Corrine Orr at Anime Weekend Atlanta in the late nineties. Both were wonderful people. RIP Peter.
My God, this is bloody genius
Close your eyes during the Raquel Welch interview and it almost feels like a middle-age Speed Racer and Trixie just kibbutzing
Watched it when it aired and thought I needed sleep. Later wondered how much time it must've taken.
Thinking back today on some of my favorite memories of my first crush, Raquel Welch. Fathom came in first, but the Overdub show was a close second.
OMG yes I remember it vividly!
Corrinne Orr voiced Trixie on "Speed Racer."
Peter Fernandez also voiced Speed himself!
This is art 🪩🙆🏻♀️
All I remembered about this was Dave saying "Brazeeel." I wasn't sure it really happened. Now I know I wasn't crazy.
Does anyone remember why they did this? Just the non-sequitur nature of Dave in those days -- plucked it from his butt?
The voice of Speed Racer!!
Fuck this show was groundbreaking.
How funny, my great-grandfather was from Monosyllable.
Wow! Cool!
Don, where are you getting such high quality copies of these episodes? Any chance of going all out and providing chronological full episodes?
Actually, maybe you shouldn't. I might never leave my house again.
Most are from my own collection; some are from others' collections. And still more are from primary sources.
I've been contemplating a complete chronological strategy, but, like you, I'd have entirely no life left.
Gen-X Ennial No idea.
YES!!
I'd forgotten all about Arnie Barnes!

Lol really this was funny so funny when I saw this in 1986.. I had smoked some real good Hawaiian.. Ugh.. Lol
@dongiller do you have any more Letterman interviews with Sandra Bernhard? There are about 18 on youtube and she's done 30 with Letterman. Would love to see more, thank you. Your vids are the best!
Thanks; you don't need to post the same message in different videos.
Why does Peter Fernandez sound familiar?
RageTV he almost sounds like the smuckers guy
Speed Racer
I THOUGHT THE ENGLISH OVERDUB WAS GONNA BE WITH ENGLISH/BRITISH ACCENT AND SLANG XD
Wasn't there also a Spanish overdub show? I believe Sam Kinison was guest
You Tube desperately needs a better search engine.
I uploaded it yesterday -- ua-cam.com/video/zUEWILMJIlE/v-deo.html
That was creepy as hell! And I wonder what ever happened to Arnie.
Did they ever have senior wences back after this?
His only appearance on the show was four years earlier, on December 20, 1982 - ua-cam.com/video/ai0JKaJUGFA/v-deo.html
Dave is still in his white sneaker period next he will go to the white sneaker and khaki pants
Overdub English on a show in English?
Of course. So f’ing brilliant.
You have to have watched Japanese monster movies to appreciate it.
This is just too weird!
HOW BIZZARE
Is that Jerry Springer doing the voice over for Dave?
Voices identified in the description beneath the video.
