    I will add some additional information from the broadcast and what microphones picked up during the norwegian live coverage.
    After Alireza lost on time (he fumbled his king, not the bishop), he claimed that there was no mating material and that it should be a draw. There was then a pretty loud discussion at the table, when the arbiter ruled the game as a draw. Magnus claimed there was mating material on the board, the arbiter still ruled a draw. We could then hear Magnus say "Who's ruling is that? Is it yours?" since he thought the arbiter was influenced by Alireza. The head arbiter then came over and ruled a loss on time for Alireza since there was mating material on the board. They moved to the side, and the camera and microphones picked up a heated debate between the head arbiter and the Alireza team and they needed the rules explained to them. After a lot of fuzz, Alireza was shown the very clear rule that it is only a draw if there is "not mating material left by any means possible for Carlsen".
    Then Alireza changed his story and claimed that Carlsen spoke something in Norwegian and had disturbed him. The arbiter then said he should have stopped the clock and addressed it when it happened, and again Alireza claimed that this happened when there was 2 seconds left on the clock and it would be impossible. This was the second time he changed his story.
    The head arbiter ruled that he lost on time and if he had any concerns about Carlsens behaviour he should have adressed it at the table.
    Alireza and his team put in an official complaint, claiming that Carlsen said something in Norwegian and distrubed when Alireza had only seconds left on the clock.
    While the complaint was reviewed, the TV team showed the entire endgame. It shows Magnus spontaneously whisper a norwegian word when he blundered his C-pawn. Carlsen had at the time about 2-3 seconds on the clock, Alireza more than 8 and a completely winning position. If he wanted he had time to complain, but was winning on the board. They played for about 2 more minutes and Alireza fumbled pieces 3 times and lost a lot of time on the clock.
    It was only when he lost on time, all these excuses showed up. The jury overruled his complaint, and Alireza lost on time. He was extremely sympathetic in the interviews before this, but this circus after his loss was an embarassment for him and his team.

I could not decipher if he was cursing and if it was indeed in Norwegian. Apparently, Alireza is a very good linguist in addition to being a great chess player. Assume he's being honest and he really was disturbed and his concentration broke...what would you have wanted him to do? Stop the match when he was in a winning position?
      It obviously affected him, you know that just by the fact that he noticed it strongly enough to still remember after the game. But he's in a no-no win situation, there's no way he could have reacted to Magnus's speaking that wouldn't have been heavily criticized.

      @texchu8331 4 роки тому +70

      @@jonathanhakim8264 If it indeed disturbed him, then he should stop the clock immediately and have the judge rule on it. However, it was on Magnus's turn and before Magnus made a move, so it would benefit Magnus with extra time to think. Magnus literally made a one syllable sound head facing downward quieter than a cough, made his move, and then they both continued to play smoothly for many moves after. No one is buying his BS. This guy demanded that the judge show him the rule in the rulebook that states that if there's a way for Magnus to win, then Magnus wins on time, so everyone has to wait (it's not the last round) while the judge gets a rulebook and finds the page to show him. Then, he goes, aha, I can complain Magnus was speaking loudly in Norewegian (which he says he didn't know what he was saying). The committee then goes to the back room to watch the match while everyone waits some more. Of course, they reject the appeal.

    The worst move possible rule is important because it categorically determines what is a win and what is a draw on the moment the opponent runs out of time. I agree with those who argue that the selfmate would never happen realistically, but the rules cannot be flexible. Otherwise, players would start to claim theorethical draws on every endgame where it is possible with best play (take a drawn KRP vs KR endgame, for example. For a GM it's usually as basic to hold a draw as to not be self-mated. If the defending side lose on time, can he claim a draw assuring that it's impossible for him to lose? I don't think so).
    It is harder to play the best moves than the worst ones. The rule cannot bend over.

    • @waldstein1585
      @waldstein1585 4 роки тому +3

      What makes Blitz Chess special? The time control. Loosing on time means failure on that. But Firouzja claims 1. not to deserve to loose on time, 2. malfunction of clock!! and 3. misbehavior of Carlson, while himself throwing with pieces around and not putting it in violation of the rules correctly within the square! Gives me a deep inside in his poor character.

    A few corrections: Alireza hit 0:00 before Carlsen’s last bishop move, because when letting go of his king after moving it, it fell and he had to put it back up and ran out of time. Carlsen made the move, but at that point he had already won on time.
    Also, Alireza’s complaint (which got rejected later after having to spent 300 euro to file it, OOF), was that Magnus exclaimed something in norwegian when Alireza only had 1 second left on the clock. Magnus did exclaim «faen» which is similar to «fuck», but it was waaaay earlier in the game, long before Alireza was down to 1 second.
    It also seemed that Alireza was trying to get the result overturned to a draw at first, but even if he did, he quickly conceded that objective after being cited the relevant paragraph in the rulebook by the head official of the tournament.

      i dont know much about this Alireza, he seems to be an outstanding player. but as a human being he is way behind. and he is already 16 so his character is somehow settled. he left Iran to play for FIDE? and now he expects special treatment??? it is not uncommen for someone to say "f**k" or whatever during a blitz. Alireza simply made up some BS coz he was winning but lost on time. he knocked so many pieces over and that was not the fault of Magnus. To sum it up, Alireza is a bad loser and no gentleman.

      Jakki Hessing he is 16 not a grown gentleman his frustrations are understandable and his actions show his immaturity but he will grow and learn as we all do

      To lie about others with 16 says everything about him. That will never change. He will never "grow" out of this... and to leave your country to play for another country, also says a lot about your chatacter. He will do anything to get ahead!

      Magnus shouted a bit earlier. What Ali meant to say was that he lost 2-4 seconds because of the loss of concentration.

    I was taught that you need to make a position with checkmate in one move, not direct checkmate. That way a pair of knights is not a mating force and does not give any draw when time is up.

    It's so interesting, coming from a player that barely beats a computer when it's on the lowest levels, that Alireza doesn't just walk away and say, "I lost technically, but now YOU know I can and will kick your ass....from now on" Or something like that.
