Back during when i was depressed, during lockdown and after I had just moved to a new country, social media helped a lot with maintaining social connections and making sure i wasn't completely isolated. This made me more willing to make friends once I got back outside, and I now have a thriving social life. I'm grateful for that but many use that social connection harmfully.

it's been a slow and difficult process to relearn how to live a normal life without being on my phone 24/7, but one day at a time i'll get there. i only use youtube and tumblr at this point, which is a huge progress considering i used to have accounts on almost every social media out there. i know how excessive social media content consumption can brainwash us, i used to spend 10ish hours every day on tiktok during the pandemic and all the stuff in there altered my way of thinking. it's been more than a year since i deleted tiktok and i cant tell you just how beneficial that was for my brain. i hope in the next few years we see a rise of more and more people rejecting social media addiction..

Absolutely! It's crucial to recognize that the psychological operations shaping our interactions and pushing us toward materialism are incredibly impactful. True happiness and fulfillment stem from within ourselves, not from constantly comparing our success to others' online.

The best advice my father ever gave me in life is "If you're not paying for the product... you are the product". In this case, the product is us and our addiction so that these companies can keep shoving advertisements down our throats for free and make more and more money while we keep coming back for more. Social media is our generation's cigarettes, look at how we pull them out and consume whenever we get stressed or nervous or are just bored. But because it's a recent phenomenon, not widely researched, and socially accepted, people just don't think about the downsides until they're too big to ignore.

The way they behave on social media, they also bring it to real life rn, especially tiktok users and FB users. Like, they're categorising individuals as if they are the masters of everything about that individual. And also, there's an adult who'd behave the same and be so scary BC some other time he told me his...uhh... disturbing plans towards another person he hates. I found those....like alienating rn. But I think this is our new reality nowadays. Also, I only stayed on tiktok since the gaming fan community is so creative. But the advice from influencers there, I skip every time

It's called labels and categories 😭 The one who asked must be trying to find a specific settings/fashion/stuff and didn't get the answer he/she want and not in a way the commenter was categorizing someone. Labels and categories help us find things what we want specifically and this isn't exclusive in the aesthetic culture. If someone ask me what kind of life I would live I'll immediately say 'Cottage core" cuz it's a specific category and if you research it'll give you the main visual what it looks like. It's not that bad. You just didn't know what it is. And this also help me find specific sounds in music production because they are also genres.

Man, you’re really talking real sense. Im 13 and i deleted my socials last year when i was 12. It was hard but when i did, the first week was hell but after months, it was actually so freaking calming. Like i realized that “damn, i really didn’t need that shit in my life.” And the fact that it CHANGED SOOOOO MUCH OF MY PERSONALITY AND THE WAY I ACT. Like srsly. Now people especially in social media think that mental illness is quirky and makes you cOoL, people who WANTS to be autistic, who pretend to have adhd, and romanticize stuff that shouldn’t be so.
And especially in school everyone has social medias i feel lke its a normal thing and if you don’t have them, you’re “weird” or “you live in a cave”. So its hard to make friends at school bc of this :/
And another thing im happy abt when i deleted socials, is that i feel prettier. Like srsly, i really do. Cause now that i dont nave TikTok etc anymore, well im not comparing myself alot to other girls. And i realized that being different is what makes us beautiful. I also start to develop my own personality and my own mindset instead of being brainwashed by the way people talk, think, act and behave in social media.

Eventually, I almost completely quit social media because of the harm it was causing me, not even training my feed could make that horrible content promoting toxicity disappear. I think That social media is what help caused a lot of connections and relationships to fail, because social media likes to sell and promote things and the people who make this content are promoting the idea of what you need in a relationship. When honestly you should just do what’s best for you and the person. I think what many need to realise including myself is that there is always someone who will love you (yourself, family, friends) and that you should focus on those relationships and just what you want in life.

where he showed a study, that showed women find smiling guys unattractive.
And that was the tipping point, where I now refuse to take any advise,
from the internet in these regards.
His point was more or less "smiling be low key gay, ngl"
and if that's what it is, then so be it.
Like, I can't imagine any women I ever gave a shit about, to be like:
"I don't think you're boyfriend material, because you seem too happy".

Social media can be bad and can do bad but it can also equally help you realise a lot about who you are and give you a moment to connect with people who might be able to understand you on a deeper level because whatever it is you are going through or feeling is something they also have.

2:49 took the words right out of my mouth. I was always against the "labels" thing, ESPECIALLY with the growth of LGBT community. I'm not homophobic in any way, what I'm saying is that people try to come up with a name for EVERYTHING. "Oh you're a girl and you like non-girls and you don't like this but you sometimes like that and you kinda feel like these? Let's name you [insert the label]." Every person is unique, you can't just categorize people, people can't just categorize themselves because they set boundaries for themselves this way and try to stick with the stereotypes. Same thing for any other niche of society.

Okay so here's my three cents:
Height issue- So ever since I got online I was made increasingly more aware of my height difference compared to other men. I am like 5'5 or 165cm. Guys are constantly being fed shit regarding how their height will doom their future. I was very fortunate early on in that I didn't let the internet tell me how reality was going to work for me. You see, I had taken plenty of shots and actually been in quite a few successful relationships because of it. It really urks me when guys with very few, if any, experiences starts spewing total BS about "The reality of dating women". According to many sources I am suppose to be undatable as a result of being well under the 6'0 quota. Yet I hate to fricken gloat, but if I have more experiences than a taller men. So what essentially does that say? It makes me out to be the ryan gosling of short people or something. Which is definitely not the case by the way. I mean seriously. It's just a warped view of reality trying to make sense of their life. Preferences are just preferences my dudes. They are wants, not needs. Who you fall in love with is entirely up to the circumstances. Sorry that you can't date a fricken wolf man with a height of 7'0 I guess?
Gender divide- For me growing up I had also closed that gap early. To be fair I was very attracted to girls even as a child with no sexual hormones. I learnt simple things like "not treating women like total aliens". Simple concepts you think guys would know, but heh they really don't. I know nerds out there that haven't even spoken to a woman irl before. Alot of guys will do a US vs Them mentality against women and judge them for sins both sides are guilty of. How the frick did childish stupid notions survive this long into the modern era?
Cringe pilled people- My favourite topics because of how it RUINS PEOPLE and makes everyone FRICKEN BORING ASSHATS. To nervous and scared of being the next keyblade cringe kid. We purposefully fail to do anything just to hang onto a false perception of graduer. We laugh at those who try.
When did we start being so terrified of ourselves.
So many years wasted doing nothing. Waiting for the right to do anything fun. When did we become such cringe lord fucks doing the most unbased shit. I am reminded of a quote that resonated with me. "Kill not the cringe, but the part of you that cringes".It's so fricken true man. I would rather be cringe and free than the fricken alternative I've lived as the last few years.

    • @interlapsed

Bro the cringe part is so true, people now seem to have no personality and because of this they end up acting like npcs because they don't want to be seen as "cringe". social media is awful. you see so many stupid things nowadays - for one, nobody goes outside anymore. most people lounge around all day distracted by colored blocks. two, it's ingrained pretty privilege into society a lot more than it should have. three, feels like the internet collectively makes everyone share one opinion which completely ruins the moral compass. i could go on forever - shortened attention spans, TERRIBLE tolerance to the real world, lack of social skills. humans were not designed to be this way. has anyone even stopped to consider how electronics came to be? personally i don't think humans designed it.

People's media literacy skills have gone down yet they spend hours on end on social media. A very dangerous combo. People, especially sad and mentally ill individuals, are easy to brainwash. Algorithms can trap you in a loop where you only see certain kind of content, usually negative content since it tends to get the most views and interactions. That must twist your worldview if you don't give yourself reality checks from time to time.
