Thank you sir. Someone who knows what he's talking about. It's not about key fobs or LEDs, it's about what the car is built to do and why people buy this car. You should do a lot more reviews. Subscribed!

Great review and you're spot on about it being a true American muscle car. It's the same reason I bought the identical T/A package as well(PlumCrazyPurple). I've owned a number of vintage MOPAR's and you're also very correct in saying that the 440(either 6pack or 4bbl) was a better street engine. It developed it's torque lower. The Hemi's were great if you're planning on living above 5500RPM but under that the 440 would beat them. Two reasons I picked the Challenger over the Camaro; Lack of back seat and vision. The Camaro's vision is deplorable. Dangerous actually...Challenger is a much better option for a true throwback...

Thanks for the vid. Always a pleasure hearing about the history from someone who's lived it.
Doesn't matter what you liked or why you bought a Challenger, but now that you have one, it's part of the ownership to get to know its history a little. Just more value for your buck.

  • @travis1795

GREAT REVIEW, I came here to see the difference between the shaker and the T/A because I like the T/A for the same reasons you do-air catcher headlights, satin black pieces and I prefer the current wheels available, and like the detail you go into regarding the car. I wish one could get the T/A wheels and black accents while keeping the Rumble Bee badging and seat logo.
The thing is while I haven’t seen the review video that’s referenced, age shouldn’t always matter when it comes to cars. I’ve always loved cars, grew up around them and am pretty familiar with how they work and the history behind them. When I was 20, I worked in sales at a Dodge dealer when the Hellcat came out. Before that I repaired windshields in the service lanes at another dealer. I may have been a “kid” as you would describe; however, I drove hundreds of cars between 18-22. I’ve driven the Prius, Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers and Chargers from various years with every engine available at the time. I could DEFINITELY tell a difference between the Prius and Challenger, and the Challenger is still favorite muscle car to this day.
While I may have been a “kid” in your eyes, I still understood and recognized the history of the cars and how Dodge is keeping that alive today. Also, i think you meant you were considering the Challenger Scat Pack Shaker-Track Pack is/was an option for the Mustang GT :)

I'm planning to order a '20 Challenger 392. Was thinking about a scatpack, then a scatpack widebody, but now I'm thinking that I don't like the widebody fender flares. Then I saw your video of the T/A...a true modern replica of the '70 Challenger with all of today's bells and whistles. I need a daily driver and a good road trip car with horsepower. So now I'm thinking that the T/A, in the Frostbite Blue color, is for me. Thanks for the video and the conversation. I'm just a few years younger than you and I also remember the late '60's and early '70's as the great muscle car days. The modern Challenger really revives those days. Go-Man-Go!

The wide body like a sun roof can be problematic. I understand those styled bodies end up slinging pebbles and junk back at your nice new shinny car. Not to mention that it's a $6,000 option.

There no gas tax on the automatic because you have cylinder deactivation. The standards don't. Nice video and muscle car history lesson. Everyone car aficionado should see this video. I've got a 2017 Mustang V-6 and am thinking of trading it for a TA 392. I don't want a Mustang GT because the new ones have plastic oil and transmission pans. You are right about the poor quality in the older cars. I had a new 1978 Trans Am. Shortly after buying it, one of the ends of the rear sway bar dropped lose!

Wow, neat car, great review. Back in 1978 I had a Duster 340, 4 sp with high compression, headers, and good rear (I think 355). Fast car for it's day. But your 392 is awesome, maybe some day I will own one. Right now stuck in a loan with Mustang 2019, manual trans 5.0= good car, I like it but I would prefer another Mopar like yours. Also, when I was a teen I dreamed of someday owning a T/A but the were 340s back then. I did buy a 440 engine that I was going to put into my Duster, I bought the k-member and all but joined the Navy, got married and my interests changed. But I am back. My present wife hates my Mustang, too fast she says!

Hi Jerry...update. Placed my order last Thursday, the 15th. My VIN was assigned the next day! Decided to go with the adaptive damping suspension as it should be a better fit with the poor roads up North here. Also, quite a bit of tourist, stop and go traffic between Southern Maine and Boston, so I chose the 8 speed. Although I miss manual transmissions, the auto seems phenomenal. Also no sunroof for me. I'm apparently at the top of the production schedule, so might be fortunate take delivery before the 6 week mark.

Hi Jerry. New guy here. Great review. I'm a bit younger, at 56. Late 60's, early 70's...what a great time for muscle cars (and vettes). Would appreciate your opinion, though. I just specced my 2019, factory order Challenger R/T 392 Scat Pack. Go Mango with Shaker package/hood pins, rear bumblebee stripe and dynamics package (similar to your T/A...275's with 6 piston Brembos up front). I have until next Thursday to make any changes to my order. What's your opinion on the adaptive dampening suspension? As of now, my car is equipped with the standard performance bilsteins. The adaptive option wouldn't break the bank at only $995, but not sure it is really necessary. Old school thought here. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    • @motorman857
      @motorman857  5 років тому +2

Well, I live in Florida where there are few curvy roads and most highways and byways are absent of pot holes so for me, it wouldn't pay to have the active suspension. Plus it would add another potential problem area and I would think cost more at replacement time. But If I lived up north I'd probably go for the extra money.

I like your reviews. More detailed & not done by some kid. Congrats on your beautiful car. Enjoy for a long time! 👍
I have an original 1970 challenger
T/A with manual and original 6pk motor rebuilt with more power over stock ratings, almost 1000 lbs lighter in weight than the new ones, and imo looks even better than the new ones, especially sitting side by side at the shows. And I love the overhang alot more on the original, looks even meaner. New ones look alot bulkier/ bloated looking sitting next to the original. However the new ones do look nice & ride alot better with all the comfy creature plush comforts of today. But that's not what a true muscle car should feel like, unless your a senior who wants both muscle looks with hp and power everything, creature plush comforts as we all age that Is more dependable than the RAW True Muscle cars of old. Then the new one wins out in that respect.
true on the original motors of old. But Hp was underrated in the old days because of insurance issues back then. Hemi's were closer to 500hp with even higher tq numbers with some easy bolt on basic mods, easily surpassing the rated 425hp as advertised .
And with just a few more internal basic mods high 500 - 600 hp was easily obtainable with ALOT meaner sounding and performing racing cams with their idle than the new ones of today.
They were REAL HEMIS back then. Today's hemi's are NOT REAL Hemis. They DO NOT have the Domed pistons/ hemisherical heads for the Much better higher compression ratios like the old Real Hemis.
The new ones are hemis in name only for branding for sales only.
Your are somewhat correct on the 440 being alittle faster up to a point, but when the dual quads on the hemi kicked in full, anything over 100 mph the hemi walked the 440 everytime.
But off the line, and top end speeds Alot depended on the rear gearing. Equally paired gearing, hemi was faster at top end. But the 440 held its own up to 100 mph, unless it was the 6pk which was a great race between the 2, with equally paired gearing and carbs setup correctly on both. Also depended on driver and tranny.
But when modded, sky was the limit for the Domed pistons Hemispherical Real Hemi over any other motor back then, whether it be Petty in NASCAR or Big Daddy Don Garlits in Top fuel rails, as well as the countless 1000's of others racing in Funny cars & modified classes in-between, nothing will be as great as the TRUE Old School designed Domed pistons/ Hemispherical headed huge monster big blocks that even still race today.
And the biggest difference is besides the originals being fire breathing monsters and better looking, is they were alot lighter weight than the current models of today. Anywhere from 500 to 1200+ lbs lighter in weight than the bloated new ones. The Newer Creature comforts, better riding & handling, safety equipment, computers, super heavier metal reinforcements all over vehicles today, with power everything & heavy sound deadening comes at a great cost for luxury muscle versus Raw Real Old School feel, sound and true experience of The original TRUE old school muscle cars from 60's-71, especially the classic lines & mean looks imo.
You are correct on the new ones as far as quieter, and better tech and comfort and handling, tire technology, better gas mileage, fuel injection, etc in the newer cars are better because Technology is alot better today. Along with higher hp/tq numbers because they need it to move the much heavier weight from all the add-ons which imo unfortunately takes away from that lighter Raw feel , sounds and looks of what the old True Muscle car stood for and Still stands for today. That's why they go so high up in value. Can't replace their classic old school styling either....so much so they are always trying to copy it, it seems. But never will completely.
But put some of that new tech on the older, alot lighter REAL Muscle cars of old like fuel injection, electronic ignition, better tires for hooking up, better suspension, etc, the old True muscle cars can hold their own racing even today. They wont be as comfortable or quiet and have rattles and quirks, but they sure look, sound and perform mean as hell.
They need alot more hp on the motors of today to move them because they weigh so damn much, compared to old ones.
Old ones kept spinning because tire technology sucked back then which in turn hurt your ETS.
However, they were easily modified to transform into much better ets, especially with today's tech in them.
Imo, nothing will compare to the Looks, Raw feel AND SOUNDS of the original muscle cars of the 60's to 71. The timeless classic lines, the raw feel and raw sounds of the racing cams, the manuals shifting, ( which most kids can't shift today so they got to get automatics) and not having all the bloated heavy safety equipment, computers & creature comforts of the newer cars, All Added To the RAW FEEL of A True Original Muscle car that the new ones could never duplicate, unless they buy a Track-pk Off road racing challenger, then yes that is more to the Real deal original muscle cars, and then some....but still, the old body lines cannot be replaced. They are AMERICA'S classic TRUE MUSCLE car beautys, never to be replaced or duplicated. 💪😎

Where are you getting info that the suspension is lowered on the TA? I've found nothing to confirm that

Well then. You need to dig a little further. Check Dodge's specs.

Yeah I got the info from someone on a forum. Apparently the issue is for 2019, all models have the lower super track pack suspension, so this year there's no difference. The 2017 and 2018s had the base suspension, unless you added the track pack or purchased the Shaker/TA packages (you mentioned in your video that the Shaker package didn't have the lowered suspension, but it appears it did).
I still maintain Dodge makes it difficult to follow some of the changes year to year

Good choice not getting the 5.7 and getting the 6.4 instead. The 5.7 are notorious for lifter failures after 100k miles.

Thanks for the informative video. I bought a 2021 Challenger T/A 392 new last year and so far it has been great in every category. It is a treat to drive, extremely powerful, and I really like the interior as well. The suede / leather alcantara seats feel great and provide excellent bolstering for the driver. My unscientific observation skills also notice that T/A 392 trim seems much less common on the road than standard Scat Packs.
