- If your Mustang or Cougar Export Brace won't fit, it probably isn't the brace, more likely it's your car! Don't open up the holes in the brace, widen the shock towers! We show you how to correctly install your export brace if you are having problems.

I gotta say I really enjoy watching an "old guy" pass down his knowledge to a younger guy who's so willing to learn from him.

Saw your a week or so ago and it convinced me to install the export brace. I have a 66 Mustang Coupe (289/4 speed/ AC/ PS) that I purchased new in 1966 and restored it a couple of years ago but put in a 302 4V. I have always been disappointed in the steering. Put the export bracket in today. The Shock towers were about 1/4" too close together. I used a porta-power like you did to spread them and then worked in the cowl bolts like you did. Your video saved me a great amount of worry and work. I could not have done it without you great video. Keep up the good work.

@@royboy3597 Hard to believe, but i have had the 66 Mustang longer than my wife (We recently celebrated 50th Anniversary)! The steering did improve. Car seems to wander less now and steering feels stiffer.

The amount of times I watched this video to prepare myself for the struggle of installing the export brace and Montecarlo bar was ridiculous. Plus the 3 months I held off on doing this part of the project was ridiculous. Haha both were installed on my 65 with no fuss. I guess it helped I had the car on jack stands for months?? I'm not sure but still appreciate the priceless wisdom shared by Autorestomod! Thank you!
Sometimes I go on ridiculously easy and sometimes you have cars like cams that are so worn out you have to spend all the effort we did to get the export brace to fit. Thanks for the kind words. And I'm glad that yours went on great.
I just installed an export brace on my 65 mustang fastback. It was similar to this but I put the hydraulic ram futher forward. It spread just fine and the brace fell into place. It was a job but worth the effort. My car handles a lot better now!

Great video and it will be very helpful as I will be doing this to my 66 but I also would like to see where the proper placement for the Monte Carlo bar is and how your determine placement.

I got lucky, 65 mustang 50 years old, purchased export brace and installed it removed the shock tops, removed the stock brace, set the new export brace and everything was in line. dropped original bolts and was done in 15 minutes. my stang had rust top down, undercarriage was very light surface rust only, repaired the rusty parts and now have 86,000 miles on it and still going strong as it is the only vehicle I own

Wow what you guys had to do to install the brace was interesting for sure.
I'm a little puzzled however .. my 67 convertible was in a minor accident and the LH side front frame rails is about 1/2" out of whack. So my question is if a car needs to be bent/pushed "back into position to get the xbrace to fit does this mean the brace will have to with stand lots of pressure at all times? It seems to me a " frame/suspension adjustment would in order. Realizing the brace is holding in place. Hope this makes sense

It can. If there is eveidence of an accident that has gone unfixed I would recommend a trip to the frame machine. In the case of our hardtop the bend wasn't that much...it just felt like it. And, in essence we did what a frame show would have done.

Great episode on the export brace. I am doing a total tear down and bought one just to make sure the spacing was correct and keep everything tight while I replace the aprons and core support. The Scott Drake export brace is great - extra thick. You didn't do the monte carlo bar though and I was hoping to see that too. What I found on mine is that the bolt holes on the aprons didn't line up with the bolt holes on the inside of the monte carlo bar. What is the right way to address that? Enlarge the holes on the apron or the monte carlo bar? Thanks.
The Monte we got in was defective. We will be doing a Manic Mechanic episode on that. We'd enlarge the Monte holes since the stresses are not as great on the part as the Export Brace.
It's amazing how soft they can be, and different between cars.
This was the worst I've seen but Scott at National Parts Depot said he has seen worse than that one.

The original export brace found on the Shelby’s and mustangs exported as in the T-5 the fire wall also received a reinforcement angle iron welded in, thus also providing additional stiffness to the firewall mount.
Mentioned this to my brother on his 1992 Mustang when he got his strut tower brace. His style had to have holes drilled and cowl removed, very flimsy sheet metal. My style, Maximum Motorsports, uses bolts through the pinch welds which is 2 layers of thin metal, making a little stronger. He wound up cutting a, large as would fit, 1/4 inch plate in on the inner cowl side. Maybe not necessary, but, it can't hurt.

You can cut it off or just leave it. Shelby left it.

When I installed mine I put the Jack under the center of the engine on the crossmember...jacked it up and waited... it took 24 hours for the shock Towers to spread open
Sometimes it takes a while for them to spread...Cam and I are impatient.
Just curious if it would help if you put the porta power in place before you remove the old brace and maybe the new one would go on a bit easier. Maybe not but I am curious if that might help because that would possibly keep the original component alignment in place.
Not sure, there's more than one way to skin a cat for sure LOL.
2 questions.....
1- if the monte carlo bar fits, won't the export brace fit?
2- can't you measure the distance between the holes on the export brace, and compare it to the measurement of the existing bolts on the shock tower before taking anything apart? Then you know roughly how far off it is.
Did you do all of this with the front end of the car sitting on the ground or up in the air with the tires hanging?
I prefer to do it on the ground so that the chassis is at full rest. If the car is in the air, the only way to get maximum droop is to jack at the engine crossmember--not safe. If you put jackstands at the framerails the car will settle back down anyway. Either way, if the car is as whacked out as this one was, you will be using a port-a-power.

ok , that was the export brace ,i got a monte carlo bar first ,it dropped right in perfectly ,,i'm wondering if my M/C bar fit good will i have a problem fitting the export brace in?
Most likely you will be OK.

I've got the front suspension of my '65 all tore apart. Figured the stock bracing was enough but after doing some reading it sounds like it might be worth the time to install one of these.
I actually got the same monte carlo bar yesterday and have the opposite problem. I've got some room on each side of it. The car is sitting on the front frame rails though. Im sure that has something to do with it. Figured I would wait to drill the holes until ive got the front suspension loaded at least.
Yes. The car should be on the suspension. We'd put the Export Brace in then look at the bar.
Why didn't you also install the reinforcement bracket at the firewall under the export brace? I'm working on a '66 Fastback GT and plan on using all the parts with the kit.

Hi, this is my 2nd comment on this video. I would like to tighten up my car, 68 convertible. I realize this is one piece of metal vs two. But does this REALLY make a big difference? Any advice from anyone would be appreciated.
I can tell you it made a big difference on my car. I didn’t believe it would since it’s a lightly driven six cylinder. A friend gave me his export brace since he replaced his with a chrome one. I unbolted the factory braces and let the car sit with jack stands under the motor mounts and the shock towers quickly spread about 5/8 of an inch total. I couldn’t believe it. It instantly created gaps between the fenders and cowl top giving me real adjustment room. So, yes it will fix a host of issues including alignment.

How far out was it when you started? Mine seem to be 5/8" too close. Is that likely too much to fix?
You might start looking for other damage to the front end. I don't really know how much is "too much". It is already out of spec, so I'd personally try and get it to come back in with the portapower.
those old car were built on tolerances of +/- 1/8" hard to get anything to fit perfect

How come the monte carlo brace does not attach directly to the shock tower, it appears that they sit forward of the tower but maybe they bolt the the flares of the tower
The Monte bolts just forward of the tower. This is due mostly to the distributor placement.
What happened to the plans for "manic mechanic" episodes?
They will start on 1.17..17. We have been kinda up against it on the personal front. But our goal is to pot one every other week right now.

i used a ratchet strap on the export brace bring the two sides together left enough space to slide the strap out.
I jack the front torque boxes it goes right together for me

My 1965 Falcon doesn't have the bolts that mount the OEM brace to the firewall. Would you guys have a solution for me or have you changed an export brace on a 64/65 Falcon?
The falcon had a weld in export brace. It was not removable. If it is missing then someone cut it out. You can get a Falcon bolt in brace from Autokrafters: www.autokrafters.com

We shop National Parts Depot. They are competitive and they have all the stuff in stock normally. Four locations put the parts in your hands quickly.
Being a 66 vert, I got it with the two support bars in the engine compt that run from the firewall to each apron. (Passenger side pictured). These apparently are only installed on convertibles. After I got the car, I installed an export brace and a Monte carlo bar, requiring removal of the two convertible-only support braces. I don't think this will be an issue, since the new export brace and the Monte carlo bar appear to be substantial support. I'd like to get "expert" opinions though. Has anyone else with a convertible removed these supports? Any potential issues? I could modify them and reinstall them, but it would be an interesting one-off that I haven't seen before.
The Export Brace will be better than the stock braces if tight. In all honesty, the original 1965 convertible braces were a Bandaid on a gunshot wound. Since they only went into the apron and had no support other than the sheet metal, the effectiveness was not great. Using the Export Brace and Monte Carlo bar will have the greatest effect on the chassis as long as the part is not sloppy on the firewall or the shock tops (opening up the holes on an Export Brace defeats the purpose of the Export Brace. We might do a Manic Mechanic on what those two parts are really supposed to be doing.

You won't be able to button it up with the suspension off. We'd wait and do it when you have all the weight pretty much on the car.

Yes, we would go ahead and do the new suspension. We will finish the valance this weekend and post on 5.18.17. We'll be doing a 302 build soon. Just need to get the short block.
