I appreciate the video. I had a clip break while riding in the smoky Mts. Just so happens a man offered me a ride to a local VW guy. I ordered a solid shaft as soon as I got back to my motel. I am a fan of all your videos.

    Hey Darrin
Thanks, you can count me in .. as one of those guys that really appreciates it all.
And I do like the long version of showing everything, without the fast-forwarding editing.
As, while it is repetitive, your sharing tons of collateral learning and knowledge.
That kind of teaching is like pure gold !
    Thanks from Canada

I get the overall idea of the shims. Good job explaining that. Would be nice if the viewers who repeatedly asked about the offset of the rockers over the valve stem could have gotten an answer. No where in the video shows or alludes to that portion of the setup. That was the only reason I came here .

Absolutely dead center. I say that because there is no rotational provision in the head/valve assembly ... Zero.
Everything touching the valve, keepers, springs, spring cap, and spring to the cap, keeper to the valve, keeper to the cap, are all cleated together with a tremendous amount of friction. Nothing rotates or has the ability to rotate.
So ... the ideal strike to the top tip of the valve ... is a dead straight-on strike.
Could the valve wander some ? Sure.
But that rotation would be between the spring and the aluminum head, and very slowly over thousands of miles.
Don't fall for old information ... that has been repeated thousands of times.
      Hope that helps.

Daaamg. This is from ten years ago! Wow. Well this helped me out a lot. I have problems with one of my rocker arm assemblies fitting too tight and I think it’s the studs. Probably needs to be deburred. Also I never knew about the shims, so it could be that also. Already took off assembly so will disassemble and check the blocks then check the spacers. Thanks so much Darren!

What 'hurts me' the most is seeing all the sweat... I moved (from sweaty Dallas) to the dessert mountains where I never sweat. I also marvel at all the rain in some of yalls vids! We get 18 inches a year. Most of it in July. I have a '73 Chevy truck, 454 and 2 69 bugs w/ no rust! Both stored outside for ever. But at 6000 feet or sunshine is devastating! Thanx for all your vids. Better than most.

I don't expect a response given this video is 8 years old now, lol.. But I have been subscribed to you and EZGZ for some time.. We are building my 15 year old daughter's '72 now that we purchased when she was 3.. She and I are builder her a motor for her FFA (Future Farmers of America) project out of a few motors we got in a parts car deal.. I am glad that I found this video for when we do her heads.. We are going to build a 1641 with a 110 cam (maybe look into the fk cams now that I saw another one of your videos on that as apposed to the W cams and lobe ramp).. I really learn alot about these engines from you and EZ both.. Thank you for doing these.! Especially for folks like us trying to teach our children things like this so we can gain knowledge to bond/learn together.!

Thank you for watching the videos I appreciate it tried to give you a better response but I’m not too good at spelling and my AutoCorrect is giving me fits this morning the FK series is a great choice for a cam much more Val train friendly than the 110 have some new videos coming out soon working on a video right now with CTE building a 40 horse for his bus

These vids might not be immediately applicable to all of our projects, but they are great general engine knowledge, and will be handy in the future for someone who is doing a VW. Make sure you or Andrea change the titles to something appropriate so people can search for them later, something like "VW Rocker Arm Installation".

Sorry for my ignorance, but what are you exactly doing with the shims? I guess you are aligning the rockers relative to the center lines of the valve stems. Do you align them so they are slightly off center from the valve stems? If so, how much?

What do you think about the Pauter roller rockers and are the Scat forged ones any good? I dunno, I'll be putting together a 2110 eventually, but I dont know if I'll use the spanish webers or find some older italian ones. And I don't know if i just get a super street gearbox from aircooled.net or what. Maybe porsche 930 axles , I dont know what aircooled torsion bar style ones are like

goodride2004 zero tolerance should be relaxed on the valve stem with pressure I guess he confirms it. Steel expands at a rate of one thousandth of an inch so go figure your tolerance will be changed
