My heart is well as I sit in my living room, sipping a coffee and listening to the calming and soothing voice of the great traveller, Doug. I am reflecting to myself as I watch another video, how excellent Doug's style of travel channel is. The long conversations are a real treat I can tell you. Perhaps the reason why the long conversation is even more meaningful and enjoyable, is because Doug, you are always on the move. It is as if the enjoyment of listening to your long stories and commentary is only superceded by watching you cycle along the road of exotic Sumatra (currently). And so we have the best of both worlds. A long-form podcast-style travel channel, with almost real time travel happenings and incidents (flips taken by accident, no hotel but a tour company lobby). Thanks a lot my friend, and happy trail to you on the road to Bukittinggi 👍

Yes, that's the bike that was stored in Kuala Lumpur. I've had this same bike since the late 90's. Of course, a lot of the components have been replaced over the years, but it's the same bike frame. A lot of my gear suffered badly while it was in storage, but the bike remained in pretty good condition. I was surprised. All I needed to do was dust it off, oil the chain, pump up the tires, and go.

I think the local guide probably thought you can leave yourself and nothing can be damaged. It is a kind of trust. 😄Whatever you are using your life preciously by travelling like this. I wanna be like you some day. Be explore and feel the beauty of nature and the human nature. Wear a hat such that kind of weather. Be careful Mr Doug.

What a trip
New highway from Pekanbaru to Padang is under construction, the trucks are delivering materials for that works. I suppose the ride would be nicer when it is completed.
I've been hearing a lot about this new highway. I've seen some finished portions, I think. These would be the short sections of toll highways. I've only seen one spot, however, where this new highway was crossing over the old one. I saw construction there. That is the only bit of this new highway I've seen. I have no idea what path it is going to follow through the mountains.
I never thought of that, but you're probably right that a lot of the trucks are carrying material for the construction of this new highway. That makes a lot of sense.
The gate being locked would be one of the not so nice experiences 😀
