Excellent morning exploration adventure. Interesting architecture and variety of crops. Kebun is used widely in Indonesia for farms as well as large plantations. A Zoo is Kebun Binatang in Indonesian. In Malaysia, we use Ladang (Estate in English) instead of Kebun for large scale commercial crops. Kebun in Malaysia refers to Garden or Smallholding.
This is a first-class, "out of this world" walk. I feel so blessed to be able to follow Doug on his travels. Also, congrats to Doug for learning the language and enjoying company with the local people. This truly is the way to travel. Best.
That’s a nice farm tour, especially the carrot🥕 plots and the harvesting done. I love visiting such farms and I get to see the actual plants of the food and vegetables we eat everyday as well as learn how they are grown and harvested. Thank you for sharing it here.
Walter is a worker who's washing his wortels in water lol. I'd say the one in blue is definitely you in the photo. Really enjoyed this walk and monologue, the fields, houses, scenery was quite breathtaking especially at the platform area. I'd imagine what it would look like on a sunny day, if it is this beautiful with the overcast weather.
The whole village should be declared as Unesco's Heritage site. You just wouldnt get more traditional than this village. The whole scenery is just amazing.
I'm a minang and from bukittinggi. Interesting thing about the farm/garden, land and other property is being passed from mother to daughter. So in essence the male didn't own the land, but maybe his sister, wife or mother did. Thanks for the interesting video 😀👍
Love seeing a picture of "hippy" Doug in India. Was that the first time you ever traveled abroad? I know we grow plenty of vegetables here, but in my travels I've only seen the fruit farms. I really enjoy that bitter style cup of coffee. Still hoping to find a shop that will serve that style option. What were those small elevated structures in the front yard at 57:03 as you were walking by? Hilarious Indonesian "Rapper"...
Yes, that was the first time I went abroad. There was a definite dividing line in my life - my life before that exchange program and my life after it. A big surprise for all of us, I think, was that the Canadian half of the exchange program had as large an impact on us as the Indian half. We all signed up for the exchange program with thoughts of going to exotic destinations overseas. It was all about going to India for me. Yet, the time spent in Canada was just as impactful, if not more so. My life was never the same after this time in British Columbia and in India. There were a lot of "firsts" during that experience. I never did find out what those structures were for. My guess is that they are some kind of storage structure for crops that they grow. But I still haven't found out. I forgot that I included that "bonus" clip at the end of the video of the Indonesian "rapper". It was explained to me later on that there is a tradition among the Minangkabau to include ceremonial recitations like this when meeting people socially.
@@PlanetDoug There’s a Taiwanese storytelling tradition that is similar. A rhythmic presentation which will sometimes include wooden hand clappers as percussion

A useful phrase when asked what you're up to is " Jalan jalan." Going for a walk.

That was one good looking young Doug dressed to boogie to Bee Gees back in the day... lol
The Indian girl, aka centerback, appears to be smitten w Doug Gibb; I sense there's a tale to tell there, William.😊
Kebun is small farm. Larger farm, is called ladang ( in bahasa malaysia)

Fried breadfruit, ( buah sentul in malaysia), textured like sweet potatoes..
I am glad to see your memory photo. You wore white shirt and blue jacket. I think you are the tallest one in this group.😀
Do try kopi luwak, one of the world's rarest coffee from Sumatra and is in many peoples bucket list!😊
Ironically Kopi Luwak was a supporting props in the movie The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson 👍👍
