I used to be a F/A for UA back in the early to late 80’s. We would fly flight maybe half full and those were mostly business folks and still make a profit. Sometimes we’d fly from Chicago to some place in the Midwest and the plane would have maybe a few people on it. The reason they could afford to do that was it was a mail run. UA would be carrying a lot of mail and made more money carrying cargo than people. Of course this situation is totally different. Thank you for sharing!
Cinderella Tremaine when I was about 2-3 (1980-81) my dad and I took a dc10 from cle to fll and we had less than 10 passengers.
missyandjoey I wonder what was going on then for the load to be that low? That would have been highly unusual. Must have been nice for you and your dad though!
it,s a different world all around now for air travel than it was in the 80,s.....what with all the buying/selling/trading on the internet, there,s more postage and smaller packages to be moved worldwide than ever before and demand just keeps growing to the point where companies like Amazon are looking at establishing their own air cargo services with their own planes......the stuff sure as hell ain,t gonna move itself....! and most customers don,t like to be kept waiting for any length of time for delivery by "snail mail". it might sound a bit nuts, but a 747F "bulked out" with large wholesale shipments of CANDY of all things flying back and forth across the Atlantic makes up to 7-8X the pure PROFIT of even a full passenger flight. it looks like CARGO,s "where it,s at" nowadays and "where it,s at" is where i,d want to be if i was running a civil aviation transport firm. we never seem to hear anything about the cargo/air freight companies crying about being in financially tough shape and going to Uncle Sam begging for bailouts.....? so many shipping agents and there,s ALWAYS someone out there who needs to have something hauled from somewhere to somewhere in a timely manner, especially overseas postage and consignments.
My friend is a pilot for United. Last Sunday she took a 777-300ER from SFO to Sydney with 30 passengers on board and returned with 365 and 40 waiting on standby
Monique Borruso 30 passengers? Wow. I guess that was one of the “rescue” flights
@@JoshuaPenaranda Nah that would be due to the Australian Governments Inbound Passenger arrival caps. Unfortunately we still have not lifted those after well over a year... hopefully soon.
This is what a normal flight would have been like in the 80s
I’m a 777 Captain for United. Needless to say, this is unsustainable.
I completely agree with you. No airline would be flying empty flts like this. Just the fact a 777 is being used for the route with few pax is very odd. Unless that aircraft is scheduled for a busier route out of MCO. I don't understand this at all. Evidently it's every flt is empty for weeks now. Something is going on that is keeping these empty flts flying.
Toyota1949 Yes, I agree, it does seem odd, but you have to remember about cargo. I’m sure the reason we used a 777 was because of a large volume of cargo. Did it pay for the flight? Well it could have depending on how much more it carried then say a 737-800 or 900 could hold. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m sure using a 777 was the most efficient and cost effective way to do it. Doesn’t mean it was profitable however.
This is a perfect example of the cure is worse than the sickness
Fred Fournier Hi Fred! Where is your base?
United 777 IAH. What about you?
If you decided to do laps around the empty coach cabin you could say you walked to Orlando 😂
I’m a ramp worker for UA in SFO, and nearly every flight is like this now. We had a flight on the 777-200 come in the other day from Denver with just 12 PAX on it. There are a total of 364 seats combined on the plane. That’s a 3% load factor. But, thankfully we had freight and mail on there to help soften the blow of loss of revenue.
Starting on the 5th, UA is severely limiting their EWR ops down to 15 flights (total) a day, serving only 9 destinations. And only 2 flights a day out of LGA to 1 destination. This is for the next 3 weeks to try and slow the spread of Covid-19.
Brian Webb That is at a great sacrifice to all who work at UAL and the country greatly appreciates the sacrifice you all are making to help save lives. I promise to take a flight on UAL somewhere when this is over to help support the effort! Thank you! 💙
You're a hardworking person bud. I thank you! as I worked in the past on this industry on passangers and cargo airplanes.
Pay wasn't the greatest but good experienced gained.
Eduard thank you! I love what I do... I’m ex-Continental but I was Customer Service with them and this was years ago. Working outside like this is great for me - fresh air, staying active, plus working around aircraft for a living - for me, it doesn’t get much better!
Cinderella Tremaine thank you!! Glad to see our loyal UAL customers continue their support for our airline during these unique and trying times ❤️
One quibble. At about 09:10 you opine that the lighter payload weight (pax) meant that you "flew faster". Retired UAL pilot here, (BTW): No, the total gross weight doesn't really affect cruise speed. Primary factors affecting the "OFF" to "ON" flight time are the computer flight-planned routing versus changes by ATC that shave off (or add) a few miles, the variations of forecast winds aloft at planned cruise Flight Level VS actual, and thus the different winds (tail- or head-wind) encountered *at* various Flight Levels.
In any case, yes this pandemic is devasting in many ways. I am very much looking forward to a return to "normalcy" (if that's ever possible). I very much want to begin travelling again, and I really miss cruising!!
Thanks for the clarification! I really hope things return to normal soon.
Faster might be because less planes in the air and more “directs” and less “holds”. Ya think?
The seats look like those on the United Express planes. Basic economy to economy plus. Nicely done. And views from the seat.
Seats on international flights are far better than on domestic.
all the staff including the pilots seem very friendly and nice, good to know you had a great flight mate, take care!
Wow... That's crazy! Would never believe I'd see things like this in Aviation. Great report
Poor man's private jet right there.
I took a flight on AA yesterday and I was literally the only passenger on the plane! It was great!
Geez! From where to where?
Nice private jet!
JOT I flew from South Carolina to Chicago. The flight attendant gave me unlimited free alcohol and beverages. He even gave me liquor to take with me .
Sort of wish I’d gotten in a trip or two at low prices on half-empty planes. Now the few flights from airports near me are very expensive... might be just as well. Probably best to stay home for now.
They should not be flying. Why did they need such a big plane?
There’s probably freight and people going for the return trip to EWR.
It looks like you have whole plane to yourself. lol
Awesome video! You practically had the plane to yourself lol
I kept on flying throughout the pandemic. Why should I stop flying? We have to support the aviation industry. Ok, the airlines will receive financial aid from governments but it’s not enough. That’s why I try to fly as much as possible during these times. Flying during Covid19 is nice again. No long queues at security checks, quickly boarding. Lots of space on board. Just wear yr mask always n it’s totally safe!!!
777 to orlando wow
I’ve only flew in/out of Terminal C 4 times three times was when I flew PEOPLExpress in the 80s Terminal C was still under construction and once after PEOPLExpress merged with Continental. PEOPLExpres was the Airline that started construction on Terminal C and after their merger Continental finished the construction
well the crew was friendly because they are few passengers and not as stressed as on a fill flight
Great clear video. Thanks for sharing.
Why did you need such a massive plane for a simple no longer than 3 hour flight?
Fantastic trip report :-)
Why would you do a trip report during these times? Why would the flight be full everyone is listening to the stay home and social distance to help this from spreading bust based on your comments your one of the morons fucking it for everyone because you want to do a trip report. Idiot
Awesome trip report. This was such an empty flight.
I flew from SFO to HNL on the same type of plane back in April and that flight was also half full. It was also the my first wide body aircraft that I've been on.
My first widebody experience was on a Delta Air Lines L-1011.
@@doug9066 same here Delta L-1011 SFO to ATL on my way to tech. school in Mobile,al
A 777 on such a short flight? Why? It clearly is not a high-demand route as the flight was so empty
Great video. Rough time to be in the industry for sure :/
Why would they continue to operate triple 7's for a flight they know will be empty. Seems absurd! Great video
Aircraft last longer on the maintenance side when they cycle atleast for 6 hours, 777 was designed for flight not sitting on a tarmac for 4 to 8 months untouched
The flight was probably full coming back since all the theme parks were closing
Maybe cargo or mail?
If it was a Saturday in Japan, then you left on Friday
Thanks for flying with United
Can someone tell me the difference between the 777 ER’s and stuff
Plane Expert So the plane that he flown on in the video was a 777-200, not a 777-200ER. There are a few differences between the two types of Boeing 777s. On a regular 777-200, it is a few tons lighter than a 777-200ER. Also because with a lower MTOW (Maximum Takeoff Weight), the Boeing 777-200 has lower airport and navigation fees. The Boeing 777-200 also has less-powerful engines, so that means less fuel burn. When there is less fuel burn, the prices are obviously a lot cheaper than a Boeing 777-200ER with a higher MTOW. So to conclude in long story short, it’s more beneficial for United to use 777-200s for domestic routes like you see here, rather than having a 777-200ER operate it as the 777-200 will be a lot cheaper to operate within the United States rather than a 777-200ER. Hope that helps!
9:32 funny how you got scared of the flight attendant 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Does this same plane make a round trip back immediately to Newark? So only 4 plus hours in the air for a 777? 😯
On yes those planes do quite a few domestic flights, right now, even with all the reduced flights, there's a DEN-SFO (Denver to San Francisco), which is a 2.5hour flight on a Big 777 !!
Good recline. I’m sure the person behind you doesn’t mind! 😂😂🤣🤣 it is pretty sad though to see what the airlines are going through right now. I’m from Sweden and we usually fly Scandinavian Airlines once a year out of Newark to our native country to visit. They have canceled every flight to and from the US for the last four months. That’s sad. However, it saves lives. We’re not going to be able to go this year.
Just watching that now and also flew home to RSW from RDU on March 14. My ticket was not $49 though. It sucks that the cheapest one was $150 for a one-way flight.
I normally watch all the way but yo text to fast and I don’t give a shit after that.
4:05-5:49 PW4090 takeoff sound. If Flying from Newark Airport to Manila Philippines via South Korea & Toronto Ontario Air Canada this engine is used by Asiana on B777-200/ER like this B777-222
I had something similar happen when I was a teenager coming from Narita to Los Angeles. A connecting flight coming in from Singapore got out way late due to weather. It had most of the passengers on it for the NRT to LAX leg. There were less than 30 people on the 747. The flight attendants gave us the first class meals along with extra blankets and pillows. They showed us how to move the armrests up so we could make our own beds across an entire row. That was over 30 years go now.
Looks a scene out of the Stephen King movie The Lagoliers
12:56 everybody gangsta till Zach tries to hijack the plane😳
If they were add me the camera so we can see the hijacking of flights 11 175 77 93 on 9/11
Great video!!!
Wow a 777 for a 2hr flight, usually a a320 or 737 would be used for a short haul or 2hrs, usually a 777 would be sure to go to Europe or Asia on those 10+ hr flights, why is that?
Say a prayer for the airline industry!, Pilots, tech’s,fuellers, deicers, flight attendants, cargo workers, mechanics, cabin cleaners, ground workers, catering, and on and on! Great people getting really hit hard
Guys the coronavirus needs to stop spreading you are traveling all the time you’re not helping, your health is more important than making a video
I flew to MCO the next day from HPN on a Jetblue A320. Had maybe 30 passengers. Lot of people were leaving MCO that day too. I have flown UA 777-200 once last year from HNL to LAX.
This is crazy. This plane took only two seconds from full throttle to lift off. That's too fast. That's basically a flying saucer speed of take off. How can that be. That's impossible.
Im stuck in Peru and I am going to return with united to USA ... thanks God...home
jessica Roman when are you leaving? i’m also stuck in peru and i can’t get a flight home since the borders are closed !
@@lesliea6716 lima, I'm.going in may to USA....I HOpe so
jessica Roman OMG may?? that seems so far away. I heard that the state of emergency will end April 12th, and that includes reopening the borders, hopefully that’s true because i’m really homesick!
@@lesliea6716 only 8 days more....and you can go to the restaurant and eat whatever you want hahhaha
jessica Roman yea, but i wouldn’t risk it, too soon to go out, i just want to buy a flight and leave, my poor cat is waiting for me at home, a two week trip turned into a month :(
Awesome video!
With so little people you could switch around to whichever seat you like lol! Yep, travel industry has certainly changed with covid, scary times.
BOYCOTT UNITED AIRLINES
nice
Sadly cancelled my trip to ONT. Sucks, but it’s not worth the risk.
Why on earth would they use a 777 on a flight from EWR to MCO? Makes absolutely no sense.
It’s corona season bro common sense
One thing I don't like is carry on, I rather check my suitcase in at the ticket counter as I've always did unlike most people. Just one less thing for me to have with me. Good video though.
Just a day after you posted this video the tour company I was using cancelled all trips through June. I was looking forward (initially) to spending my birthday in Spain. Oddly enough Delta hasn't cancelled it's flight and there are only 87 empty seats combined for both transatlantic flights...seems like everyone is hoping this pandemic will disappear within the next 2 months (was scheduled to depart JFK on 6/5). For passengers who had tickets to fly by 5/31 they are offering a 2-year e-credit. If I cancel now I'd have to use it by this October (one year from purchase). Somehow that doesn't seem fair as my tour company cancelled on me and can't use the flight! I'd be on a 767 over and an A330 on the way back.
I love United
Is this the only airline that is flying empty, I don’t see any other airlines shown. Why is that?
Rachel O pretty sure the person meant why other airlines cancelled most flights but United is operating near empty flights.
I would’ve moved to the front seat.
I wouldn’t
I almost used my miles and took this from mco up to ewr on 3/21 but decided not too., would’ve been my first 777 flight in hindsight could’ve been my last too. Glad I didn’t do it.
Super Video
Great trip report Zach!

Half a million infected and yet no travel ban!! WHY?
Wow
Im a tech for them, nice to fly the 777 with a few peeps but wait till december or high season after everything goes back to normal 👍
Stupid whaysting money and Petrol
Where is the screening process upon arrivals? They should not let you go without this protocol
Very nice video of your trip. I love Orlando. My favorite place. Keep up the good work, and hope to see more. Stay safe and healthy.
Because of COVID-19
I flew from Houston to Detroit on thanksgiving day some years back on a 737 and there were 12 passengers.
Youre touching stuff on an international plane😫😳
Rare sighting of those pw4090
I sat in Economy plus on American
For keeping the time slot and gates
Runway 17L in Orlando
Thank You for the videos. I am a nervous flyer and miss a lot of trips. I need to fly more often.
butter touchdown
Hmmmm @ 8:22 80 degrees Celsius ?
I see that the plane was so light that it didn't take much of the runway length to take off.
I flew on a completely packed 777 from JFK-TLV 4 years ago and it practically leaped into the sky. Amazed that it didn't use much runway...but then the 777 has the most powerful engines of any plane. My first wide-body flight was a British Airways 747 from Chicago to London for my first overseas vacation...never felt it land - smooth as silk.
Thanks for the trip report. My wife and I work for United, and it's great to see passengers experiences, adventures and ideas. PM me if you want to talk :-)
TexMex Traveler and now how is your life after working In United? I have applied for a position in this airline and no good news for me. Probably, the destiny wanted me in other route
@@alexanderhuamani1158 I still work for United, I just don't advertise it much lol. I'm in management. I also fly drones doing engineering inspections. HMU via email if you want to talk more!
Are you looking to be a pilot as well?
Not every United employee is wants to throw you off the plane. This crew actually invited him to the flight deck, Wow.
Leinard James Mariano yeah - imagine that! A lot of us actually love where we work and what we do? 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️
Apparently your stuck in the past little boy
Landing on the island of st helen would t br a pro lem for this flight
Love the video
I miss flying
Great bargain.
Can you leave the text a bit longer
Pause
Quiet takeoff, derated due to light load?
Almost certainly derated a lot more than usual. Very light passenger load and EWR-MCO is a fraction of the distance the 777s can cover fully loaded.
Still a very nice engine purr regardless.
That triple 7 must be leaving the fleet, it doesn't have the new livery.
a lot airplanes are still or was being painted.
@@s.rob.5482 I thought I read that some of them will be let go. This one as stated in caption, is a non-er. Probably about 25 years since its first flight.
@@willblove8206 with this coronavirus issue, no telling. I know a lot aircraft are to be painted. United is looking to retire B757, and depending on travel demand B767. I haven't heard of any 777 being let go.
You have flown during COVID. I hope you have been in quarantine and not being in touch with others.
Alexander Huamani Stop being so gay about it. He’s not stupid and everyone’s been told this many times.
Luke S. You must be obsessing with gays
777 from Newark to Orlando that's weird. Waste of money.
Timmy In The Woods They can’t let these 777’s sit, it wastes them a bit because letting a plane sit ruins them per se and rip to the planes already grounded due to COVID-19. It’s better to keep the bigger planes in the sky because they can use it for multiple flights everyday yes it will take more time to clean them. Since United is using EWR, SFO, and IAH to fly internationally the bigger planes will come back to fly to their respected destination and if it is not needed they will fly routes like these. They will then use the plane tomorrow or the day after, but it will be used. Plus since the plane is bigger and if they had more passengers they can use it to sit people rather apart to reduce the risk!
Timmy In The Woods plus it was most like filled up on the return flight as all parks and hotels here in Orlando have closed.
I was thinking after I wrote it. Probably needed the triple 7 in MCO. Maybe was going international from Orlando.
In March I flew on Delta from Boston to Orlando and it was full, the plane was a A321
I use to work for ual a long time ago...so glad I left !
So basically you might (let me underline this word), carry Covid19 from Newark to Orlando just because the tickets are cheap???
