      @Jen Campbell You use the word “shielding” a lot in this video. As an American, I’m not used to hearing this word used in this way. Does it mean you are quarantining?

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  2 роки тому +3

      @@Steampunkkids I don't think so, I take quarantining to mean keeping yourself away from other people if you're sick and you don't want to infect anyone. Shielding is basically the opposite of that. Essentially I have just been in my flat, out on walks, or at hospital appointments (plus the occasional house viewing). It was a term coined by our government for those considered CEV. Though the official protections put in place have ended, many disabled people are still doing some version of this if they are able to (many factors at play, obviously, everyone's circumstances are different).

      @@jenvcampbell Thank you! We don’t have a word for that in the USA. We should! Shielding is what my children and I do, since one has breathing issues. Thank you for telling me about this!

    We have a lot of garden space, some shady, some sunny, some inbetween. We're in western Oregon, so a bit similar to English weather. My plants that do well in full shade or limited sun - japanese maples, hydrangea, a daphne, hellebore, hostas, ferns, bleeding heart, lady's mantle, violets, sweet woodruff... there's more, but I'd have to go out in the dark to jog my memory and I don't know where my flashlight is, LOL. But, that's a good start.

    The kitchen shelf thing is called a ‘Le Mans’… My partner insisted we get them in our new kitchen. I was sceptical, but they’re probably one of my favourite bits now, such a satisfying action(!) and v useful.

    I'm so glad it all worked out - so stressful! Loved seeing Lola giving the place the once over. I think a house feels like a home once you put your own stamp on it whatever form that takes. Love your kitchen cupboards & outdoor space is so good.

    Jen, for plants for the garden - I cannot recommend ferns enough. They grow well in shady damp conditions, we've got a bunch in the corner of our garden where the sun doesn't really get and they're so beautiful and intricate and seeing the new fronds unfurl as they come up is so satisfying. They can cover a lot of ground if you've got gaps in the flowerbeds, and they're far hardier than people realise - they overwinter in our garden in yorkshire with absolutely no problem.

    Having just moved ourselves two weeks ago, you have my full sympathies. The achy bod and the mush brain are REAL! It still feels super weird and surreal, almost like it's not quite real life again and we are living in an AirBnb but as soon as I got some books on the shelf, I felt like I could at least breathe a tiny sigh of relief.

    If you choose to put a fireplace (working or not) back in and wish to keep some original character of the house, look into local architectural salvage companies. They will probably have tiles, mantles, and maybe inserts that will fit with both the time period of the house and the location as well. They also may have some nice pieces of wood that could be used as shelving or for patching parts of the floor. I hope your home and garden turn out well. Best of luck!

    Congratulations on your house! How wonderful for you. As you said north facing garden I thought "oh how wonderful" because north facing is lovely and sunny in the Southern Hemisphere! It took me a moment. Oh yes, it's our south facing equivalent. I'm not great at gardening, but if you check out the front gardens on the other side of your new streets as you walk around you'll get ideas for what likes the shady life in your area.
    I moved into my dream home in 2018, and I still have major projects to do. It does take time (particularly for me) to work out what I want in particular spaces - I don't have a great 3D imagination. But I knew from the get go that I wanted a library in my front room. I thought I'd have it done within 6 months. It isn't done yet, but will be done this year! I have a designer working on it. I've just recently ordered the fireplace I want (it took me quite a while to find that), and I'm so excited for it to finally come together.

    Congratulations! Years ago when we moved into a sweet old house, the yard was a mess. Thru word of mouth, I was able to connect with a garden
    planner. She assessed the soil and sunlight and drew out a plan for both the front and back yard. It was SO helpful and gave me great ideas for starting up the garden. Her plans were like small works of art, and she charged about $ 150.00 to draw out some plans. Our yard was shady, and I grew to love hostas. My favorites were hosta alba - white flowers that were very fragrant. We also had rows of magnolia trees along the fences (white and very fragrant), candelabra plants, peonies and white hydrangeas and allium. Later we added more color. Forsythia, coral bells, lilacs, azaleas all did well
    in our shady yard. I learned a lot from going on garden tours in England and in the US and from going to the annual Chelsea Flower Show. I also
    loved the old Gertrude Jekyll books! It is magical to see a garden develop with love and a little attention !

    Congrats on the move! It's so annoying that companies refused to move your stuff when asked if their employers could wear a mask... (and refused to make business?? ) I still don't get what big of an impediment is a mask for people, but you already experience this frustration in huge amounts I'm sure, given the UK regulations. Here in Quebec we still have to wear them, but I can tell for experience that it's getting very difficult to enforce the mandate in many work places...
    Anyway, I'm really glad for you!!

    I absolutely agree with what you said that not knowing how long something is gonna go for makes time feel so weird. I went through my green card process in the US last year and the waiting was horrible because of that. It was actually quite fast (just 8 months and a half, which ia considered fast for the process), but while it was happening, not knowing how long it wojld go for was the absolute worst

    That's a gorgeous lilac bush! Any shade loving plants will do. Hostas come in various leaf shapes sizes and colors, in addition to flowering. Some varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons can handle shade or part shade, and are evergreen in winter. Impatiens are great go-to annuals for shade. You have a blank canvas there, which means everything you plant will make a big impact. Congratulations!!

    So happy for you! As for the office door, it was a common thing when wall to wall carpeting became popular. Doors had the bottoms cut off to accommodate the height of the carpet and padding underneath. All the doors in my house are that way as well, and our Victorian style house was built in 1910. We tore out the awful carpeting as soon as we were able!

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  2 роки тому

      I thought about carpets but it’s about five times the amount you would need to cut off for that. Maybe they tried to do that and damaged the door so they had to cut off more than they anticipated 😅

  • @jennmartin851

    Hey! Not sure what's available in your area (and which of these will work for your growing zone), but we have the same situation in our backyard. Fatsia, soft caress mahonia, flax lilies, coleus, impatients, coral bells, hostas, asparagus ferns, foxtail ferns (type of asparagus fern), cast iron plants, elephant ears, some hydrangea's can handle shade, and azaleas as well (flowers are toxic to dogs. mine leave them alone though). I'm in a more coastal warmer climate, so some of these may not work in your area or if they do you'll just need to cover with frost blankets. Some herbs can also handle shade like Sage since I know you like to cook. Congrats on the new place!

Especially heucheras come in all kinds of different colours. Plus, they are very easy to take care of. Bleeding heart plants are great for shady areas, too. Ferns will work, but you might want to look into whether or not they are invasive in your area, they are definitely in mine. I hope it will feel like home very soon!

    Congratulations on the new house. Very happy for you. I also always find it weird, about viewing a house for 10 minutes and then spending a sh*tload of money on it. It is the same here (Netherlands). But that 'chain' you are talking about I find even weirder. That we don't have. If one of the buyers in the chain here cannot buy or has to postpone for one reason or the other, it is their problem and they cannot just pull out. Thank goodness. Buying and moving is stressful enough without that.
    Hope you recover from the move soon. Enjoy the new place. X

    I’m so happy for you to have found and moved into the house you wanted! The wood floors with their wide planks are beautiful. The garden is sweet. 🪴 I’m not sure of England’s woodland plants, but it’s fun to search for shade loving native plants too. I love the spring ephemerals where I live: bloodroot, Dutchman’s breeches, trout lily, Jacob’s ladder. And the good thing with a garden is that it too doesn’t have to all be done at once. You can plant some begonias and herbs in pots, and simply enjoy seeing what comes up out of the earth this year while weeding out anything that doesn’t please you. 🫖🌷🌻🥀 ☕️📚📝

The ones you had in the previous flat weren't yours? or they were but you had to sell them?

      They came with the flat, generally speaking houses either come with appliances or don’t, or you can agree to pay money for the sellers to leave the appliances. So all of the main appliances were here apart from the fridge and there were no other furnishings. x

    I heard about "Gazzumping" as my cousin was looking for a house and that happened to her. I believe this doesn't happen up here.

      Gazzumping was something we were really worried about. In Scotland it doesn't happen as much as things are legally binding at an earlier stage. I wish we had that here, too. x

      @@jenvcampbell What actually is it?

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  2 роки тому

      @@ametrinemoon It's when another buyer comes in after you've already agreed to buy a property, and are in the process of creating contracts, doing surveys etc, and offers more money, and the sellers decide to break their agreement with you and go with the new buyers instead. This means you can lose thousands of pounds in fees, as well as losing out on the house you were intending to buy.
