“I need to do some Hoover-ing ... very exciting .” Lady, we will gladly keep you company while you Hoover, because you are just that delightful ❤️😜 I’ve been reading lots of non fiction over the last month or so, and thus decided that I needed a bit of a fiction brake. So it’s “A Spy in Williamsburg” ( historical fiction from a series that I loved as a kid ) “The Lost Crown “ ( historical fiction for an adult market) and “Sarah” by Teri Polen ( a little YA horror, just to round things out 😜). I’ve never heard of Claire McGowen, but if you liked her that much, I have no choice but to give her a try
Fresh buns: with butter or butter like spread. Slightly older buns: toasted with aforementioned spreads with maybe honey. I have tried melting a square of Lindt chocolate inside a slightly old bun in the microwave. Delish! I have never had piping hot fresh buns! One day!
I loved Passing and I love this cover. And I 100% agree that I really did get to know the characters a bit more, it felt like we had more time to get to know them. I also enjoyed it more than The Vanishing Half but I think that was expected, I tend to enjoy older books more. I want to hear Tessa Thompson narrate this book, she's one of the actresses in the upcoming film adaptation. Excited for that. I am so jealous of your baking skills, in my next life I am definitely a baker... it's just not part of my journey in this lifetime. Those looked delicious. At the moment I am reading Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. Great vlog :)
Those hot cross buns turned out so beautifully! I wish I had the patience and confidence to try my hand at making anything bread/bun-related. But I find it so enjoyable watching you bake! I think the buns would be lovely with cream cheese... Currently reading: 1) Children Of The New World (Alexander Weinstein), on your recommendation. So far, it's been a great read, very poignant. 2) The View From The Cheap Seats (Neil Gaiman), which I'm also liking.
I always find it so interesting how the same foods can be so different around the world. Here on the East coast of Canada our hot cross buns don't have as much stuff in them (just raisins) and the crosses are made with icing added after they are baked. I suspect they are sweeter here. We eat them as a breakfast pastry.
Really loved watching your vlogs on a morning, so cosy and relaxing. I'm currently reading the 42nd novel in the J.D Robb crime series and am enjoying it. It's nice to come back to a long crime series and feel comfort knowing the characters.
i JUST finished the answers by Catherine Lacey and really enjoyed my time reading it, although so much happened im unsure what my real takeaway was. I have pew out from the library now and am interested to pick it up. a card version of an escape room sounds SO fun!! I love the in person ones. I did a digital only one with my team at work and it was a little cheesy but still fun
I discovered hot-cross buns on my first visit to England in the very late 60’s when everything was still very traditional, so it’s butter for me. I’d love to try making them. With mince meat pies they are my favourite English pastries. A little disappointed with the crosses, I thought they were more fancy (and mysterious). Those you made look scrumptious! xx
Hi Jen, I became a fan of yours about three years ago - you were one of the first few booktubers that I subscribed to after I moved to Australia from China. I was just starting to read more in English and your recommendations helped! After the sad announcement that your health was deteriorating I stopped following your videos, because I couldn't bear thinking about what it means to a reader/writer to lose eyesight little by little. I'm back again now and I'm so glad to find that you're sharing more of your life and the funny and childish side of you. Love the baking, the smart speaker story and the lovely things you found in the forest. xx
@@K.Kitbex aw thanks, that's lovely! I'm afraid I am a bit lovesick at the moment, but hopefully that will get better soon. To be fair, there is also quite a bit of jealousy and longing in these letters, so it feels not entirely inappropriate, haha.
I hope you enjoy Rebekah’s book ☺️ Wonder is not an Own Voices book (Disability Readathon is about celebrating work by disabled authors), but I do appreciate the things that organisations such as Changing Faces have done as an extension of that book. Happy reading x
Your videos are always so natural, just like sitting down with a friend. I didn't know that Vanishing Half is inspired by Passing. I recently read VH so will have to check out your recommendation! 😊
Jen! I love your nail colour!! Green is my favourite colour, and I'd love to know brand and shade, if you can share please! My Grandma made hot cross buns for Good Friday/Easter. I haven't attempted them myself, but our crosses were an icing glaze. Maybe it's a Canadian thing lol.
I can’t remember the shade but pretty much all of my nail polishes are Essie. You can scroll through their colours online ☺️♥️ the icing is definitely a Canadian/US judging by other comments, too. Sounds yummy to me!
i just finished the book on 20th century Ceredigion poets, and someone I know has made me promise to read the autobiography of a funeral director and leant me it, so that's this year. Also managed the short story Pale Horse K A Porter on my quest to finish all the 1918 pandemic books. Oh, i read Partygoing. Frankly, there's Henry Green and there's everyone else. I can't help it. That writing. Oh. Plodding on through five spice street, which i find gripping, although it's nonsense (not in the 'Jilly Cooper is nonsense' sense but in the sense, gibberish). Goodreads reviews either say it's boring or it's great, but they don't say 'gripping gibberish', which is what you need to know! At this rate i'll be finished in two years time, i read some most weeks.
Those hot cross buns look fabulous. I’m just finishing off Dead Head, the third book in a crime series by C J Skuse. Highly recommend the series, it’s been described at Bridget Jones meets American Psycho which is pretty accurate!
Lovely vlog as always. I've never had hot-cross buns, they sound quite nice tho so I may try making them once I become a more confident baker! I'm reading a sci-fi book called "A long way to a small angry planet" and loving it.
I’ve never had a hot-cross bun. 🙁 I just finished listening to Infinite Country by Patricia Engel. It was fantastic and I loved the narrator. Now I’m listening to Piranesi, which is narrated by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He is doing an AMAZING job. I’m loving it so far!
@@jenvcampbell I had no idea what to do with a crumpet either when I found it on a London hotel breakfast buffet. 😂 Thanks for the heads up on Tessa Thompson’s reading of Passing. I will listen to that starting tomorrow. I’m on a great run of audiobooks (see above).
Ugh, yes on the destroying of Exit Games! I found one at a used bookshop here - thinking it was there b/c they didn't play it - only to go home, open it, and the people who donated it used it! I will check out the other version! Also, I bought Illimat b/c of your suggestion and my husband & I are OBSESSED! :) Thank you! We got the Crane Wife's expansion last weekend. We also got Call to Adventure, which I wonder if you guys would like.
Oh my goodness, why did they donate that? 😂🙈 that’s not a fun time for you, ha. I’ll check out Call To Adventure, thanks. Glad you’re enjoying Illimat ☺️ x
I just finished reading King and the Dragonflies by Kacen Callender. I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I fell in love. Your hot cross buns looked delicious 🥰
What a cosy vlog 😊 If you guys haven't played it yet, I can really recommend the Exit game Dead Man on the Orient Express. That one has been my favourite thus far. It's basically a murder mystery that you have to solve, so a little different from the other scenarios.
I hadn’t known cross hot buns were a thing before - I don’t think we have them in Germany. But they look delicious! 😍 Other topic: Watching this I was wondering, if you had ever considered writing crime before? Just out of curiosity. Usually you seem to read the same things you write (poetry, magical realism, short stories...) crime seems to be the odd one out. I only very rarely read crime, but The thought of a crime novel by Jen Campbell gets me very excited! 😄 xx Carina
I'm reading, The words I want you to keep, by Gaby Comprés. It's mostly affirmations and reaffirming Indigenous existence so I'm taking it bit by bit and enjoying every moment with it. Just started, The Mummy Awakens by Naguib Mahfouz. Like, really just started it. I've only read the intro.
Wow, those buns!! I'm unusual I think in that I like mine not toasted, with butter. No side of cheese though as I'm vegan. I'm going to check out the series you mentioned as we've just finished a series last night and need a new one. Currently reading (& should finish today) the last wild place by Mike Tomkies, about living in the remote Scottish wilderness x
Hi Jen.U might like Series Louise Penny starting with Still Watch.Theres also some audios and Movie with the First.Enjoy.p.s. Hot Cross Buns look Delish...
Lovely as always - I really enjoy these mix videos and your baking is inspiring 💚 I've also only just ordered Catherine Lacey's The Answers, very excited for it.
Something I forgot to say in the video, because it’s not on the blurb of the book but it was on the blurb when I read about it online: the main character has a chronic illness, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to pick that one up over her other novels. Hopefully it’s a great one! Happy reading.
@@jenvcampbell Oh yes, that was also mentioned in the article (about Millennial Fiction) where I saw it mentioned, and it got me even more interested in it.
I don't want to break the internet or anything, but I don't like hot cross buns. There. I said it. But lovely video nonetheless. ☺️ And I went and bought Passing on audio. Can't wait to start it. Xx
Thank you for this lovely video of loveliness. I'm trying to challenge myself by reading the long list for the Women's Prize for Fiction this year, but the library waits are long on a lot of them. :p Are you reading those this year? I know The Vanishing Half is one of them; I'm about to start it!
Have you ever tried Robert Bryndza’s Erika Foster series? Or Sharon Bolton’s Lacy Flint series? I’ve brought Blue Monday from the library the other day, because I’ve heard you talk about it a few times and decided to check it out finally. :)
Dear Jen, I might suggest you take a look at Margaret Millar's Beast in View. It is a psychological thriller, which I though was written absolutely brilliantly. :) Thank you for the video!
My mum eats hot cross buns with cheese melted on top and tomato sauce (yes, on the fruit ones) and I don't quite know how to feel about it. I tend to only eat the chocolate ones so I guess I can't judge?
I feel exactly the same about Unforgotten! I think we’re going to go back and watch the first couple of series as I can’t remember what happened at all but I really like how it’s written. I’ll definitely try the crime book you mentioned - I really like Claire Mackintosh’s books as she’s an ex police officer. Oh and I just have butter on my hot cross buns but I quite like them toasted! Oh and where is your walk footage from? It looks like a great place to explore!
I know I've watched this two years late 😅 but wanted to say how much I enjoyed it! So cosy ☺️✨️ those hot cross buns looked stunning 😍 I like to eat mine toasted with either butter and marmalade or thick coconut yoghurt and maple syrup 😋
It's funny that you should comment on this now, as I've just filmed a new spring reading vlog also making hot cross buns, ha. That will be going up next week. x
I just finished a crime story that I liked very much. It's called "the long, long afternoon. The story is set up in the US in the 50's and it's something different, but good. By the way, what do you think about cream cheese with the buns?
There’s something therapeutic about watching you cook, keep the vlogs coming please. We appreciate! 😍
