That's an impressive antenna and outstanding contact.
I have the same antenna and for the size it works very well ,I changed the little mag and with the right thread made a adapter from 3/8s onto the little thread's on the antenna and is on a large mag with better coax then give it to the family and made another with a 5inch mag it does PMR and 70cms and very happy making antennas got the measurements of transmission 1
Nice little antenna Lewis, like the look of the radio too. Will check them out, stay safe.
I've had my eye on an Antenna like this for a while. As I live in the middle of the block of flats I cant put up an Antenna anywhere so this is my next best option.
Yes you can mate! It's much more fun, and more educational, to make your own. They generally outperform commercial offerings. Make a window dipole antenna. I used one at work for many years.... made from copper self-adhesive slug tape stuck to the wall, but a glass window is even better. Two 19.25 inch long strips with a narrow gap stuck to the glass, and use thin co-ax such as RG174 soldered to the ends between the two halves to feed your radio Costs next to nothing and you could make a few for different bands. They work well. Just simple dipoles (look up DIY dipole calculator for the element lengths). The cheap and effective option for flat dwellers. Good old slug tape. You can even work HF from Indoors if you keep the power level down.
Mighty impressive on 5W! Good contact.
I have used those on road trips in the US they are sold there under several names MFJ etc for $12 to $15 . I get them with a SMA connector
and have had good results . The antenna stuck to the roof fine at speeds up to 85 (naughty me).
He wasn't hit'n these distances without a repeater right?
In 1988, I made a very long contact with a RadioShack® 3 watt, 3 channel, walkie talkie. The contact was from Prince Edward Island to Central Indiana. It was very exciting! He came in crystal clear. The aurora borealis. In 2013, I made a vhf contact from Toronto to New New Jersey. It was with a MURS channel 3 walkie talkie. I liked the woman's accent. She was calling for her kiddos.
Much better than a rubber ducky and you don't get breakups when you move about even a bit. Of course better and higher goes further. For serious mountain topping, as much beam and masting as you can manage will do wonders even with 5 or 10 watts.
Thanks Lewis
An antenna on the outside of your car making all the difference Lewis!
I had one of those years ago, not the longest lasting but okay for the price. A mount with a shorter length of less lossy coax would be better still, even again with a short antenna.
As an experiment, try it without the car.
@@allancopland1768 Cast iron garden bench worked well but in Newton rather than on Werneth Low, it lacked the elevation 😹
greetings from germany. love your videos
Nice little set up. Many years ago, I was on 70cm and had a great lift and had a queue of Germans on all night. 200 ft above sea level with a rotatable 48 Yagi on a 70ft tower 4 watts. I lost my voice in the end. G0DCZ
Great result. Well done bud.
Thanks Fred
It's about time my man's got a mag mount 😉♥️♥️♥️
Nice one Lewis mate, I think I was picking you up here too, but the signal was a little broken up.
Cool for the size 👍👏👏
The antenna should come with an SMA connector and not with a PL-259 plug. The plug probably weighs as much as the antenna, mag mount and feed line together.
MRM-100SR - SMA
Strange, as it looks like Lewis is using an adapter to go from the pl259 to SMA. Huh 🤷🏼
I have had a couple of them, but my vehicle destroyed the SWR on them. The other OP mentioned Welshpool. I spent a week there about 50 years ago. Lovely place.
If this channel is still active... is there any way to avoid this issue in general with mag mounts?
I've got one of them antennas and it works very well on 2m where I live
thanks for the info.
Hi, I use the diamond version of this antenna, as my Jeep has a fibreglass roof the antenna is mounted on the wing. It gives good range on APRS , so I can confirm the distances you were getting.
What's the diamond version of this
I have a similar antenna, marketed by MFJ (if I remember correctly) and I throw it in my suitcase when I travel out of town. It works great on rental cars and really extends my HT's range.
I’ve setup my cars aux jack in a way that lets me connect my walkie talkie to car’s antenna. No extra clutter and the antenna is easy to replace at anytime.
My favorite 2 meter mobile antenna is the Newtronics Hustler CGT-144 phased 5/8 over 1/4 wave. It has a very low angle of radiation. I accessed the long range Denver Colorado repeater from 380 Km and the medium range Little Rock Arkansas repeater from 120 Km.
I had one of those... It worked very well on 10M also
Wow! Gigaparts says it's 7.1 feet tall. That's approaching 102" stainless steel whip territory! I wouldn't mind one of those.
Amazing how many arm chair experts.
Any antenna is better than no antenna, certainly better than a rubber helical inside a vehicle.
For quick use I have something similar but use one of the longer(40cm) rubberised type whips
I wonder if this will work on a Baofeng GT3-TP?
Great distance and great video
Paul
Hi Lewis, I’m probably like a lot of people, got a few Chinese hand helds but struggle programming them. Can you please do a video on setting one up and programming. I live in Manchester so settings would be similar.
Very cool.
Here in the US w DC have something called GRMS that uses the 462 to 467 mhz UHF frequncies with 5 watt handhelds maximum allowed and 50 watt base stations or mobile allowed. Would this antenna work for UHF as well? I'm new to all this.
On a side not my family came from Cheshire in the late 1600s to the US.
Thanks.. VERY COOL..
awesome!
Good! I bridged 12.890km with 5Watt and 10 meters end feed antenna.
Did you ever do a vid on LoRa and the LoRa applications ? would love to see that.
Seemed to be a noticeable difference in clarity between 2m and 70cm into Jodrell bank. Presume its line of sight so attenuation due to the poor weather must have hampered the shorter wavelength more.
Correct assumption😉👍
Newby passerby: VHF=2m (eg. 145.475) , UHF=70cm (eg. 433.450), VHF better antenna option=40" antenna (full 1/2 wave), UHF better antenna option=15" antenna.
Are the above all true?
Great video - just getting back into 2m and 70cm with my new CRT Electro fully programmed by Knights. I'm using a Nagoya antenna but yours looks even stealthier if there is such a word! Best 73 Rob M7URG

Magnet look really small. How strong is it? Wondering if it can hold during windy days or speeds around 70mph.+ /-?
Seems to perform well, and not bad for £15.
the proper antenna is a great thing to have, this is why cell phones need a antenna connection.
antennas are the number one item for any and all radio connections.
Will the same concept work in the jungle woods connected the jungle with the city at the 10km range?
Invested in one of these and so far I am still unsure.
Gives better quality when the car is running but when stationary it seems unable to pick up some repeaters that I can pick up with the rubber ducky from inside the car.
Does the cable length matter as an antenna or not? I would like to know the reason for both
Wow nice!!! Would you say one of the best?
heeey do you have a link to the adapter used for the antenna to radio? thanks in advance
3:00 Is this sound from your handheld radio speaker? The sound is pretty good
Good day,
I'm planning to purchase either the Nagoya UT-72 or Nagoya UT-72G antenna. I'm primarily going to use frequencies between 451.000 to 455.000 most of the time, and occasionally frequencies between 144 to 145. I've heard that the Nagoya UT-72G might be a better choice since its frequency range extends from 155 to 462 compared to the Nagoya UT-72, which covers 144 to 430. However, I've noticed that the Nagoya UT-72G is more expensive in my area. Can you please provide guidance on which antenna would be the better option given my frequency usage and budget constraints? Your assistance is much appreciated. Thank you.
Dude 70+ miles?! That’s impressive on 5 watts. Thoughts on using this on a baking sheet in an attic?
What is the antenna material? Is that Nitinol like the signal stick antennas?
What kind of handheld you are using?
Greetings from Bavaria, DH1AR
Hi Lewis, I just received the same antenna and a Anytone AT-779 uv from moonraker today, I'm fitting them in the car asap (£7.50 for antenna when bought with the radio) I'm not sure the Antenna will stick as the base has a felt material instead of rubber, will give it a try tomorrow and report back.
Fitted the antenna to the roof of my taxi and drove around all day, plenty of speed bumps were encountered and speeds up to 40mph, the antenna maintained position.
@@michaelfarrell9511 that's really helpful thanks.
Great job Luis 73 from kb2uew
Lewis can you point me in the right direction where i can buy one
Is this Antenna suitable for a Radtel Rt 470x ?
Can you put this anntena on a fm radio transmitter???
I plan to buy the BNC version of this to use with my HTs in my flat. Going to put it on a radiator.

Find a local metal/engineering company
Get a thin(1mm) thick sheet of steel just the size of a window ledge
Clean it up, paint/spray it white... You have a much better ground plane
@@4X4-RADIO Thanks for the advice.
I checked out the antenna and saw how cheap it was. I'm guessing that if something this cheap can increase the range by this much, then something a little more pricey might do a better job? Can someone recommend an antenna maybe costing no more than $100, but will increase my range to multiple hundreds of miles? I'm planning on getting one of these handheld "ham" radios and want the best antenna. And I'm talking about either an antenna that is directly attached to the radio or an antenna that is handheld (like the ones used for reaching the ISS, but cheaper).
Hey mate...great channel by the way, learnt a lot, and inspired by you and other avid youtubers I've started my foundation course.....a quick tech question, if I've SWR'd an antenna on a particular frequency, if I change radios and use the same frequency do I need to reset the SWR...many thanks mate...keep on filming, love em.

Hi mate if the antenna is resonant on that frequency you shouldn’t need to
@@RingwayManchester ok Lewis...many thanks mate...been into cb for years and now the ham side ...love experimenting with antennas and making lots of em at the moment...being an engineer helps a lot......keep up the good work mate ....ps just bought a Intel safe drive cb...39 quid, works ace as well...would love too hear your review of it.

Intek....sorry for the typo
@@abrosc Hi Pete - is that the Intek M899 Vox Safe Drive CB Radio that I’ve seen advertised at £39.95? On face value it looks great value for money, as it includes all the European selections + AM & FM, plus remote mike accessories. What are your initial thoughts on the radio - what reports are you receiving? Cheers, Iain.
@@iainmeteorscan1555 first impressions are ace mate with good reports, currently working off a home brew inverted V in the loft when at home, dimensions fit perfect along the roof struts and in the car work it through a diamond quad band antenna that's really for my tyt quad band radio.....used a zetagi 300p for added power when mobile if needed.....Great radio and with all the added toys it really is deal.....
That's some distance
Nice video Lewis. How does it compare to rubber duck antenna from same location?
I tested on the home receiver. 5/3’on the stock, 5/9+ on the mag
@@RingwayManchester Wow! Thanks. Might have to get one.
how do you get the terrain graph at the bottom of this video
Google maps give a similar elevation graph if you set up the directions from point to point in the walking mode.....let me know mate if you find a better alternative, thanks
That's a Nikon P900 or similar in 1:01, isn't it? ;)
Moonraker .. it’s the name of a Cb antenna .. a long time ago !!!
It's also the name of a James Bond movie from 1979. :p :)
Can you provide a US based vendor? TIA
question would this work for dmr mounted on the top bracket of my vertical areal
It’d probably cause poor swr
👏👏👏👏👏
This maybe a good option for my ht that can put out a solid 25wt What kind of adapter what I need to use this type of Antenna with a baofeng UV-5R type connector?
You need a pl259 to sma
@@RingwayManchester thanks buddy👍
@@RingwayManchester just ordered this I guess it's on sale now 12 pounds I live in the USA it's a dam shame that it's going to cost me over 70$ to get this thing over here but it's just what I want to run my crazy ht at full power mobile
Would it fit a Baofeng UV5R
Yes it would
Great! To the end of the world, all you need is such an antenna and a backpack to survive. :)
Would this work on a balcony 50ft up a highrise? Thanks in advance
Very nicely
Thanks, ordered😉
Advice please, I got an adapter(amazon) but the antenna end is round, the mrm end is a nut shape after a few mil. Correct adapter? Thanks in advance
I just got my order all the wy from the uk Is the antenna only cost in $17 American But it cost me like $50 to ship it here I hope it's good
Would work for gmrs? Are there any results?
@@mclovengarcia2883 yes it's tuned for anything really in the 2 M BAND and the 70 CM band which that kind of covers gmrs it's a little above
👍
I bought one of these only to find out my car roof is not magnetic
do you use repeater? or point to point ?
Simplex; point to point
@@RingwayManchester so no repeater used when talking to the guy in whales ?
I enjoy your videos. One thing that gripes me is the cb lingo on amateur radio. “Roger roger, operator name would be Ben, pushing 5 watts” pure bullshit. Is it amateur radio or is it cb or are the two now the same?? 😌
@seanmoyses Hi sean - well, don't listen into the conversation, then!
Rg174!!! That’s like 50% loss at 440.
@Wade Smith Hi Wade - Yep - but I guess there’s no real point in having RG58-sized coax on a mini-magmount!
This is great, however the losses on RG174 at 2m or especially 70cm's are HIGH. Wouldn't be surprised if you are losing half your power over that 4m.
Yeah true, just over 1w loss in reality at 6w
@Get CTOwned True. Assuming the antenna SWR is 1.5 or less, the 4m of RG174 on that antenna will result in RF losses of 27% on VHF (145MHz) and 45% on UHF (435MHz).
Still more efficient than using a rubber duck, though! Beware, guys, of similar so-called dual-band mini-mag antennas turned out by our Asian Friends - in my experience many do not resonate anywhere near the Ham Bands! Caveat emptor.
how many watts is your radio
You’re joking aren’t you?
@@RingwayManchester I'm just asking you
It’s on the thumbnail 😂
@@RingwayManchester do you have baofeng UV-S9 Plus
Pl259 for above 100MHz operation - junk design, still gets somewhere surprisingly 😅

Just don't try to drive anywhere with that antenna on your roof, it won't be there very long!
Up and down the M11 and A1 and mine is still holding strong but admittedly the magnet isn’t nowhere near as strong the DAB mag mount I have.
SMA-F Female Magnet Gain CB Radio Car UHF VHF Ham Antenna for Baofeng UV-5R
PL-259 unfortunately
Use an adaptor to allow connection to your radio/scanner...
They do other fittings mate
@@johng7rwf419 Well obviously. Use a PL-259 to BNC converter, then another adaptor to go to SMA just like it should have been in the first instance.
@@TonyLing And then rip-off the radio SMA connector...
@@SilmarilS79 SMA goes up to around 16GHz. Why would you want to do that?
For us US folks...... 123 km = 76.4 miles
The moral of the story is, you have to be on a hill or mountain 300km above sea level to get that distance. Which most people can't do.
Many people live in urban cities & depend on repeaters when they use HT. And everyone in HAM community does know that height is might.
But..... huge populations live in urban cities, and they cant always get up on 50 story buildings to get a contact. Most people stay at ground level in city streets or parks.
Thats just being realistic...
Why not just use a repeater? More range is great. But that's what they are there for.
Cause the whole idea is experimenting
@@menajemh seems like a hard experiment to learn. I guess but hey what do I know. All I know is if you want to talk long distance a repeater is the way to go. And the average Joe can afford one now. So there are usually plenty around to use. Military grade repeater less than $400.
This tiny antenna is not worth for such price. Why you got 123km range is only due to your nautical height of your TX spot.
That's not much of antenna
These antennas don't last.
