Hiya Mark, Great that you are looking at things in a positive way, keeping your chin up, cheers to you. The belt wobble maybe the belt still slipping in a certain spot ?. although i guess you have it sorted now. the grounding was a surprise i bet, great that Awanui NZ has a keel, our boat doesnt as its more of a planer, I'd hate to hit the bottom and tend to moor in a well safe depth. Youre doing well keeping her ship shape. Great Drone footage. Well keep it up bud and safe journeys forward, cheers. John NZ
Lovely episode Marky! Enjoy all your little insights on how you're feeling - ups and downs! Keep the cooking videos coming too. They're always great fun! Stay safe!
Just started watching your channel, first one was where you grounded etc - ouch! Really enjoying your adventures and love the way you’re learning as you go, it’s very refreshing compared to other channels which seem to be full of very experienced travellers with nothjng going wrong. Keep doing what you’re doing it’s brilliant!
Really enjoy the drone footage, cooking videos, stories of what you see, what you eat, who you meet, where you go, etc. etc. etc.! Thank you for sharing your amazing adventures. In our local boating waters we say, if you haven't been aground, you haven't been around!
Very personal video, thank you for sharing. The Atlantic looked cold, gray and hostile. Great drone footage. Please only go out into the Atlantic in very settled weather. Love the cooking -- don't stop. Your pleasure making delicious dishes is contagious.
Mark the footage of river entrance stunning, the guy chinking the hull of the boat brings back memories when i was young mechanic installing Detroit engines in long liner boats, would watch the old boys chinking hulls and i even had a try at it, take care son
Another excellent and entertaining episode, thanks Mark. Very wise to stay in Port with 5mtr swells, we crossed Bass Straight last Wednesday night in 4-5 mtr swells and that knocked the ferry around a bit ,would be way worse in only a 51 footer, take care, fair winds.🙃
Mark I just want your story - it is the real story that I am interested in not just the Bla Bla of a fake story. Really love ❤️ your story. And wish you all the best - would love to be able to share the journey. Harold and Wendy
Enjoy all your videos. As they say. Variety is the spice of life. Dont let the struggles get you down. If everything was easy, it wouldn't be a worth it.
We just love to watch your journey bro , it’s real and genuine , I just read you ran your boat aground , I wish you well and hope all is fine . Good luck brother and stay safe , cheers 🍻.
Great video Mark. You post what you want to post, and we will lap it all up. Both my wife and I love watching your videos, and the cooking! Keep up the great work, looking forward to episode 100. Hope the family is all well. Cheers 🥃🏴
Mark... You are doing good!! Even at anchor your videos are great. And should you choose to teach cocking - no problem. Like your approach to problems and challenges! And nice to see some maintenance again! Keep up the good work, even though time alone can be tough - but you are doing more than good!! Still like the way you experience things and relay them.....
Appreciate you continuing to take the time to document. Don’t worry about pleasing people… film and post what’s in your heart and let the right people find you. That’s my advice about UA-cam even though you have been doing it longer and didn’t ask lmao! P.S. Wanted to share that we just went under contract on N4125 here in the states and couldn’t be more excited. Saw your post on dreamers… learn and move on..water off a ducks back my friend ~Nathan & Lindsey
@ Thank you! We are really excited about the upcoming adventure. The listing is off market but I’m working with Garrett Severen and Valerie here in the US. Had a good talk aboard 5102 with Jim about the 41 and 51… very informative. Can’t quite afford the 51 yet and don’t wanna wait to start our adventure.. so we will begin on the 41 then move either to a 51 or similar larger 2 state room Nordhavn in a couple years.
We love your blog. Please consider wearing a lifejacket and motor cutout lanyard on your wrist when alone in the dinghy. I would like to see your charts in north up view so I can follow easier in my plotter. Can’t wait to see if you go into La Coruna or El Ferrol, both lovely harbours. The calm waters of El Ferrol seemed like heaven when we slipped inside after crossing Biscay in a force 8.
Mark , I for one can not thank you enough for all you have posted on Awanui NZ . Post all that you want for yourself people come and go but for me just recovering from an operation my eyes light up with a new post. I will say that I’ve got a full set of metric sockets plus rachet when you hit the UK. Keep um coming
@ Sorry Mark they are imperial . Let me know if you need short or long sockets plus extension bars or specific sockets my Dad had the lot as he worked on the original Rover V8 engine . Make a list I’m sure I’ve got it.

Hi there catching up .. just got back from Zanzibar..definitely warmer there than where you are! ☀️ It’s a pity about the river closures! Some big decisions to be made re your journey. Keep your head up.. it’s all about the experience and there have to be lows every now & again..
@ absolutely stunning & snorkelling fantastic. 🐟 🐠 What cameras did you buy as a matter of interest as I did not catch the names? We are in Cape Town so we won’t be able to buy you lunch on your travels! 🌍🛥️😂
Pity you had to move Mark, with the JD Belt replacements, maybe when at a good tool shop get you self a good battery operated rattle gun with imperial sockets.
Mark, you need invest in some power tools and some metric and imperial socket sets. Life will be a breeze for general maintenance. Porto looks amazing though wow!
Mark, regarding the port engine belt, if the tensioner oscillates the same with the old belt, that would indicate that there is a pulley with runout or the machining of the grooves or idler surface on one of the pulleys is not concentric with the shaft bore. Could also be crap stuck to a pulley causing the belt to jump and shorten causing the tensioner to oscillate. Either way this condition will cause premature belt wear. If this has only occurred with the new belt there could be a thick section in the new belt causing the tensioner to oscillate. Love the channel. Cheers - Fred from Tasssie
Hi Fred. Fantastic information thank you I really appreciate it. It has stopped which is really weird. Also when we fitted the new John Deere belt the tensioner once tension was taken up still had some stretch left in it which I assume slowly goes as the belt over time stretches? Now it is against the stop which seems incredibly quick for a new belt. I checked the torsion on the auto tensioner when the belt was off and it was perfect so a tad confused I have to say. What do you mean a “pulley with runout”? So pleased you enjoy the Chanel. rammells@xtra.co.nz
Hi Mark if the oscillation has gone that would be the kinks in the belt being ironed out from its folded position and being stiff/cold - so no pulley runout (wobble). That tensioner looked to have heaps more travel from the position when the belt was first installed compared to where it extended to when the belt was removed. But if it’s at the stop already, there’s a couple of positions for the alternator that might give you some capacity to lengthen the total circumference/belt travel around the pulleys to pull the tensioner back. If the alternator position is already at shortest belt travel, then the belt sounds too long. A shorter belt could be installed by removing the alternator quadrant bolt (three position by the looks), pivoting alternator to give extra travel, installing belt with tensioner retracted, refasten alternator and then release tensioner. Another option is to reposition the idler pulley on the mounting plate (multiple holes) to subject to pulley guard clearance. Would be worth checking in with Nordhavn regarding this in anycase . Hope this gives you a few ideas. Cheers - Fred
Looking further at the arc of the tensioner pulley arm at its current point of extension, it won’t take much belt stretch to cause significant rotation of the tensioner arm toward the stop, indicating either the belt being too long/or adjustment required to alternator or idler position - I’m pretty sure the tensioner should be retracted more than it is on a new belt. Cheers again and safe travels
@@AwanuiNZ i have the same engine in my 475 and the tensioner oscillates the same way. once the engine warms up and rpms are up it seems to be much less and almost go away. there was a post or two on the nog with other boats running the same engine saying they had the same thing
Such good information and agree likely the kinks out. I will have a good look at the alternator mounting position. Have a friend joining me soon who is a retired mechanic - will tackle then…after a beer
Great video and bummer that the camera went in the water, but in any case you got a new one on the way. Those waves don't really look inviting to go into, good choice to simply stay put. Safe travels to the north, it is almost becoming a culinary tour of Portugal 😀
Fab film Mark. You get what I was trying to say now about how that long term swell is after the weather and adds to the natural fetch swell. Add that to a tidal French approach and it’s brown trousers if you don’t plan for the worst. But your a pro now and will be fine just always assume it’s 2m minimum out there and add 5knts to the gusts will be fine. Nordhavns are for big water. If not happy find a hole and a pub… 😂

Hey Mark! Great video, and drone work! Rainy days are great for catching up on shows and movies! Have you looked into yacht controllers to help with solo anchoring and docking? Glad everyone is safe and sound. I saw your post on the dreamer forum. I hope there isn’t much damage.
yeah understand solo boating is a difficult sometimes but what you are doing is brilliant, enjoying and keep doing what you are doing , maybe improve your camera skills haha
I would be changing the guards to the belt to pin connects. So the bolt stay in but you just remove the end spring clip. Why did the belt/s need changing?
@ You were lucky with the weather around Porto, we nearly came a cropper there 20 years ago, pilot book said don’t make an approach if there is any swell running, we ascessed the sea and thought it was calm enough so started our approach to line up the leading lights as it was getting dark slowly making our approach and my mate was on lookout for wave breaking we were very close and a massive wave started to build behind us making it too dangerous to continue so back into the wave we went at full power we survived and crossed the crest before it broke, went a few miles up to the next port ,we were very lucky it’s very very dangerous an area not to be taken for granted.👍😎
Do you ever use a second anchor just for peace of mind. Especially when you’re not on the boat. I would be so worried about wind shift and dragging. Just wondering
There are more backward Countries in the World that use Region A buoyage system (red buoy on port side when entering a Port) than Countries using the opposite Region B system.
Look at a socket set.I have a 3/8 drive socket set that has both metric and imperial sockets. Its your channel. Do what you want. It is you. I think you will find Spain is in the same boat(no pun intended) as Portugal re immigration. I think its the right thing to do re the authorities but you ar giving thm the opportunity to y no. I think all three(Portugal,Spain, and France) are part of that aggreement re schengen?
Why not go to the UK the UK is no longer part of the EU so as far as I know the Visa period does not apply to the UK, To enter the UK, you will need a Standard Visitor Visa for the UK

Keep them coming Mark whether it be cooking, drone flights, food excursions or anything else. Great to follow your journey. 👍
Cheers Robbie
Keep doing what you’re doing Mark. Loving each episode
Thank you I really enjoy making them
So much to do all in one spot how great! The bad weather days are a perfect time to wipe and wax down the engine room.😊
What a great idea
Good One --keep them coming including the Chef videos. Can't wait to see how dual cameras footage comes out.
Should be good but looks like the SD cards I got are not fast enough. 100mbps…thought that would be sufficient….always a challenge

I believe you use an Ultra anchor. I saw on a boat show vid that they have a new hinge clamp to secure the snubber line on to the anchor chain.
Thanks I will check it out

Hey Mark! Great video, and drone work! Rainy days are great for catching up on shows and movies! Have you looked into yacht controllers to help with solo anchoring and docking? Glad everyone is safe and sound. I saw your post on the dreamer forum. I hope there isn’t much damage.
Boat seems fine…pride a tad damaged!
Nice to be able to get the correct belts. They do however seem a bit pricy. Can’t do without them though.
Correct but I am looking for alternatives

Any update in your auto pilot? Any concerns with bottoming out in the river? Updates on the realities of managing the N51 are interesting

Yes it’s tough in these parts…see next episode…big mistake on my part and totally avoidable
Nice to hear a Scottish accent, if you come by Edinburgh I'll take you out for lunch.
Wow at this rate I am going to put weight on….if only!
It was not a single pleasure boat around and you were surprised that you are not allowed to anchor😅😅😅😅
Middle of winter not much around and shows anchorage on Navily
Do you ever use a second anchor just for peace of mind. Especially when you’re not on the boat. I would be so worried about wind shift and dragging. Just wondering
When do you plan to cross the Atlantic on the way to NZ?
My plan at this stage is 2026 or 2027 via Iceland and Greenland….open to modifying planned route though.
Falmouth is a good port is that the only one in the uk your going to ? very nice around for walks
My intention is to cruise the Southern Coast of the UK over summer and then head to Antwerp on to Amsterdam through the canals
put some paint on the chain 3 or 6 meters so you no its coming?
Have the paint now just need the pier!
@@AwanuiNZyou don’t have a chain counter ..?
No not yet. Honestly I can now tell by the sound the chain makes how far away the anchor is once it leaves the bottom.
you are in Portugal my friend and the music is nothing portuguese, is spainsh. I like your videos kipe your good work and enjoy Portugal and europe.
Will do
When you cross the Atlantic, if you drive your boat up from Mobile to Chattanooga, holler and I’ll buy you lunch.
Done…keep an eye out on Chanel/marine traffic
ark ! You need to get the right tools !!
Correct
Today I learned that channel markers are backward in Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
Get a couple of floats for cameras.
Great idea…wrist tie not silly either
There are more backward Countries in the World that use Region A buoyage system (red buoy on port side when entering a Port) than Countries using the opposite Region B system.
Wow…ok
Are you going the northern passage or the Panama canal??
Panama Canal
Is your AIS off? you seem to have stopped far from the shore.
Possibly I will check. Safely in port - just!!
Just do what you want to do
Doing my best and good advice….thanks
What is the Comino?
A walk of 800km across Spain or 600km up Portugal….its amazing
Camino, not " comino..." 😊
That’s it
Is anyone able to retrieve your camera from the sea floor. Did not get opinion it was too deep
Too much tide and current just not worth it. Would cost more than a replacement. 10 degrees so no way I was trying to get it.
Be prepared, going north in winter is not going to be all fun. Brace yourself, and stay happy. (satire)
Will do thanks
You knew you needed imperial tools, WHY have you not got them yet?, naughty boy.(satire)
On their way
Look at a socket set.I have a 3/8 drive socket set that has both metric and imperial sockets.
Yip they are
Why not go to the UK the UK is no longer part of the EU so as far as I know the Visa period does not apply to the UK, To enter the UK, you will need a Standard Visitor Visa for the UK
Dont go anywhere where there are rocks mate 👍
Aground twice and lost camera 📷 and you have to cross the Atlantic yet gee whizz and yes iam an ex Australian fisherman
