the bees know what there're doing

If you don't clean your refractometer with clean water between tests, your second result may show higher sugar. In other words, inaccurate
Make sure you calibrate those every time before you use it.... I have seen them drift off accuracy in less than a month. So always calibrate it with olive oil right before checking. Also allow 30 or more seconds for the temperature of the honey and the tool to stabilize.
It was actually calibrated right before the video. Thanks! Natalee’s Mom
@@dsummerscm I was sure your daughter already knew that, but I know a lot of new people watch her channel, so I figured I would throw that tip in there.
@@BackBeeBrokenBeekeeping we appreciate that!
I have had capped honey test over 20% so it's best to check it before you lose it.
You're delightful!
I have only 5 colonies, so I have the "luxury" of keeping my honey from each hive separated and sell as "small batch". The last honey I extracted must have been really dry, because it was sooo gooey and just did not come out of the cells. What a pain!
Great videos! Keep it up! And, whoever is running your camera does a great job!
hey there! quick question- why is it important for the honey to be around 17-18 percent specifically? i was trying to look up some info but wasn't super successful
It will ferment when the moisture is too high.
Oh, thank you. You are so refreshing. A beekeeper who knows what she is talking about. I pull honey once a week (so I can label the nectar source with each extraction) and dehydrate if need be. Yes, sometimes capped honey has a higher viscosity than uncapped. The more you empty the frames, the faster the bees fill it back up. They like to be “busy bees”.
I think the reason the bees quit capping is because the nectar slows down and they save the wax production for the brood process. I may be way off but until I hear a better idea that’s where I stand.
Yeah, you make sense. I think they have to wait for new bees to be born because they don’t have enough wax glands, and their wax glands are only activated for the first 12 to 20 days
White or blue ?? Which reading was the moisture content in the refractometer.
I was checking mine in the buckets and a few are 16-17 and I love it, what about the difference between A grade and B grade honey moisture content, I think it’s nice to know where I’m at now
Probably an abruptly ending nectar flow causes them to not have have the ability to finish capping sometimes. IDK, just an observation I've seen.
i prefer to harvest uncapped honey as long as you measure thr moisture and dry it. uncapped honey is so fast to harvest and i can put the boxes back on thr hive right away
It is often dry enough even if not capped because they are still using it to feed brrod
I had some uncapped today at 17% but we've had a 6 week dry spell.
PS: Sometimes the bees are just too busy collecting nectar, so they don’t take time to cap.
I had a couple of frames a week ago that were uncapped but tested under 17%. I check each box. Cheap insurance.
Mom to the rescue again, reminding you what to say 😂 good topic 👍 when I started apprenticing in 85 that was the golden rule because we didn't have a way to test honey but refractometers changed all that and now you can get accurate assessment of your moisture content unfortunately like a lot of things in beekeeping the old wives tale brigade just persists with myths like "unless your honeys capped it's not ready" 😬🤦 and as you observed you can have capped honey that's through the roof and people don't test it because it's capped🤦 fermented honey is the foulest thing you can stick in your mouth and especially fermented thyme honey, it's just nasty😫🤢 great video (and nice save Natalees Mom)
156 views and no comments so I had to post this. I know I don’t comment like I use to and Natalee doesn’t respond back to comments like she use to but she’s like me and everyone else, busy!
Americas toughest young lady! (bee stings are nasty)
haha thanks!

I extracted some 13% about 3 weeks ago.
Do you smoke your hands
