I loved this video. I have been a member of a lot of groups in my lifetime and I've never seen someone make a sacrifice like that so that they could discuss real issues. I do not own a Onewheel and while disappointing to hear that this company has room to grow I'm really glad to know about these issues before buying anything. Thank you for all the work that went into this.

Hey Sir :) Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video! I really enjoyed see you ride from coast to coast :) Seriously, I'm not sure how you were able to ride so far in one day! I ride 8 1/2 miles and I'm really tired! So well done! (plus you filmed it all!). Also thanks for talking at the end, I'm new to having a Onewheel XR and I haven't been aware to "all of this stuff" going on behinds the scenes with "right to repair" (and I think we have the right to repair, especially after paying $1700 for a board. DAM IT). Thanks for continuing to spread that message!

The community can and needs to bring their 3rd-party mod creativity to the software problem. I fully agree with your outro plea, I think it's valuable and much needed, AND also we need to remember that we are no more incapable of fixing a software shortcoming than we were to extend the range when we wanted to. It's the same type of problem, no need for us to cower and freeze in the face of it. I'd bet good money it's way easier to jailbreak a OW than an iPhone. Where's our software peeps?! Let's get on it!

Fantastic ride and your points made at the end are still so valid today. As FM continue down the same anti consumer rights to repair path. Being a pint and XR owner in the UK the pain of struggling to get any viable repairs/upgrades done is real and so painful. I look forward to the day when their patent ends and rivals start coming out with a better approach to their customers.

I am from NY but I was in Zephyrhills when you took this trip. I didn't even know about the onewheel then, but now I have had my XR for 10 days and I am addicted. Props for doing this kinda trip, I don't think I would. I did 27 miles yesterday and my right leg went numb...battery wasn't dead yet though so I kept going for a while. Once you have a onewheel, you always wanna be on it.

Great video, and I think the interview at the end is answering your concerns. Why lock the battery and other mods because they'll go out of business. By having a one place for repairs allows FM more capital for R&D. Great way to think about it is" the Movies", which after you bought your ticket you have to pay 5 for water and they don't allow you to bring your own. If Movie theaters didn't do this they wouldn't exist. Car companies do this as well with there ECMs, were alot of electrical repairs required a software decoder only available at dealerships. If FM listened to you, they'll bleed to death or release new boards longer. I believe if anyone wants to support FM buy a pint because its cheap and will give the company exposure when people see kids, and girls ride there products. Hence the reason for there business cards with the purchase of the OW.
I agree here. If there's at least one thing FM is doing right, it's keeping their business relatively small and growing within in both research, revenue, and hopefully resources to address speed and cost to repair and produce future products. Companies like Boosted failed due to their greed and intent to expand so fast, their means could not catch up with the overhead due to their goal to be at the top and take over the market early. Onewheel XR is amazing, personally I don't own one but I'd like to someday. The range and capabilities are very appealing and I'd like to see those features go bigger in the future. This means that a company as relatively small as FM would need to lock down and develop quality. I don't want the next best 2nd placer coming out of China. - A mechanical engineer

Right to repair, take notes FM. You already have the market cornered with a great product, but don't get greedy about folks repairing their own property.

You actually just stopped my purchase of a Onewheel I planned on making after the weekend. I’m not a fan of how Apple controls everything in regards to repairs and it seems as if FM is no different. Really disappointing tbh, but better I learn now instead of dropping $2k.
unfortunately its the only company with a good version the DIY community is working on things but nothing is streamlined enough yet to compete. I want right to repair though just like everyone else.
@@real_ez8412 The newest version of the trotter t3 has a bigger motor, 1500w, bigger battery, 12 inch tire, supports right to repair and mod, and is using the diy community controller VESC. Releasing their app soon too. They are leaving everything, even core programming open for the end user to mod as they see fit.

Change to the trotter. It's software is improved a ton on the new models with an app coming, and they are leaving the entire board, including the software, open and user accessible. You can buy parts and do repairs yourself or use 3rd party parts with no issues. I've been speaking to them directly and they have said they hope to leave the entire thing open for the community

Holishit i just got an XR with modding it in mind to extend the range... I’ve been looking at so many videos on how to do just that. I was so confused as to why land surf had discontinued the fender mount for the ego battery. I was going to buy an EUC because of the range and speed but when i saw a video about modding the onewheel i figured that was the way to go, fucking hell... I’m kind of glad i saw the ending of the video. Fucking hate this.
If you want long distances, an EUC can't be beat. Another local couple I know did a similar route to mine on some gotway wheels and it only took them 3 days. When you have 100mi of range and can maintain 25mph comfortably long distance riding becomes much easier.

I bought me an XR a year ago and I had nothing but problems with the hardware. Bluetooth issues, ball bearings, and two battery cells in series that was always at a higher voltage the rest of the pack, making it die at 30% in the app. All these issues I've fixed myself. The Bluetooth problem, I found 2 solder points not soldered, so I re-soldered them and added an external antenna. The batteries were replaced with Sanyo NCR20700B 4250mAh 15A batteries which extended the XR even farther. I am not an engineer or anything special, but I am a do-er which is enough to get the job done. I probably saved money and time not doing it through Future Motion. *Cheers*

Some stretches might be iffy. You'll want a cbxr battery if possible. And don't be afraid to ask residential properties for power. Friendly people out there.
Oh, and if you want a support rider. Let me know, i would do the trip again on a bike.

🌕🌎 I live in Santa Cruz Mtns and did visit future motions office a few years ago, kinda fishing for a job. Though have tried to reach them by phone more recently and after couple times of jan hour of waiting with the lamest bumper music of which sounds like a looney version of wizard of oz they just hang up.
I will say in their defense that they just follow a policy that while based around most profit, it can be said they are protecting their products performance reputation by controlling the repairs. They also are considering the potential accidents that can occur from mechanical failures. So while the end of this video is very enlightening and does offer solutions , perhaps one wheel can bend some and offer more repair centers and allow a few more parts available. Awesome well done enjoyable video. The filming offers great photography and a story of a young rider journey with many challenges that are not going unnoticed. Got a kick out of watching , the humor is there , and should stand as landmark in one wheel honorable achievements , even as painful as it may have been.🤙

Comparing an indie board riding sport to Apple is great comedy. Designed and made in the Bay Area equals more cost for shipment/repairs, it's just a fact. Acting like the OneWheel, has been around forever like an old Ford pickup truck, and expecting repairs/parts at your fingerprints is absolutely crazy.
I get it, but at least allow people to put on battery packs for extended range. I agree with in the dope though. If you buy a product you have the right to repair it.

Do you feel like riding regular is a disadvantage over goofy riders because your back is to the traffic while riding on shoulders? Or to an advantage because its easier to jump away from the road?
I'm just a regular rider, and I can't ride as fast goofy. Didn't have much of a choice. I'd rather not see my demise coming toward me, keeps my death a surprise.
