Regulation size is minimum of 2” square and maximum of 2 1/2” square.

Instead of 5 + 4 strips could you use 4 + 4 and then rotate every other one 180 degress to get the checkboard pattern?
You know, I think you’re absolutely right about that! I just made a quick sketch trying to figure if doing it that way is overlooking something, or would lead to a less accurate or lesser resulting pattern…because that was the way I learned it from Frank Pollaro’s videos. But I don’t think it matters if the 4/4 pieces are spun end for end after cutting them. So cheers to you, nice observation! If next time I am making one I discover a reason for doing it the 5/4 stripe way I’ll let you know…oh wait, I did think of a possible reason for the 5/4. When you spin around the 4/4 as you described, some woods with a particular pattern may look worse or distracting when turned because their particular pattern will be flying piped every other row. I guess it is a case by case situation, if the appearance is not affected then by all means you can go
with the 4/4 and simply spin them end for end.

I believe there is (or was) a HDF (heavy density fibreboard) available….I have never used it….MDF performs all the functions required for my furniture / diy purposes
I never heard of the HDF, sounds interesting. But I’ve always felt regular MDF is heavy enough! 😎
This video made my go buy and veneer saw, veneer and that vacuum bag. Did you glue the chess veneer to the MDF and then add the bordered 45° angles around with more MDF or did you just use 1 large piece of MDF with the chess board in the middle with mitered veneer around it?
Glad you enjoyed it Matt. The entire top is veneered over one large piece of MDF. First the chessboard veneer is taped up, trimmed square, and then the veneer border is cut mitered and taped around the chessboard. Once the top is all taped up, it’s glued down onto the MDF core in the vacuum bag.

@@EpicWoodworking quick question. I have everything taped up but there are a few small gaps between the ebony strip and the chess pattern. Will this create problems when I glue it up? Or should I
re-cut the ebony to ensure no gaps and avoid squeeze out. Everything looks great as of now, just don’t know what to expect with glue up
When finishing this what grit sandpaper would you start with?
You can start with 150 but don’t stay with it long, and then go to 220. You can go finer, to 320, 220 is usually good enough for most things. Thanks! 👍
Regulation chess board squares are 2.25 inch.
I would like to answer your question (33:59) about good quality chess pieces. An American company, the House of Staunton sells all sorts of pieces which would fit your chess board. The middle range for prices seems to be between $120 to $200 per set and they are in different sizes and colours.
Is is possible to make hexagons out of veneer using the technique you use? I have looked online and have not found any method which seems as simple as yours. Just curious.
Thank you! I checked out the pieces...I had no idea there was such a specialized high end market for chess pieces...but then again, why wouldn’t there be? 😎
And I have not yet explored techniques for cutting perfect veneer hexagons, mainly because I have never had a reason to. But that is a good question and I will give it some thought...and post here when I come up with a method.

@@EpicWoodworking I have their Grandmaster set in boxwood and Rosewood. Other options include Chess House in the north burbs of Seattle or the Chess Store in the west burbs of Portland.
I bought a real ebony set direct from India from Chess Bazaar. It's stunning to look into the graining on real ebony. I'd only seen "ebonized" pieces previously and you can't make out the graining, it's just black.
If you have suggestions on how to ebonize wood yet preserve the grain appearance that would be a great topic.
How is the gap created between the the pattern and the edges?
I’m not sure I understand your question accurately. If you mean the “gap” between the chessboard pattern and the border pattern, there is not actually a gap there. It is a thin line of ebony veneer which was taped to the border and applied around the chessboard pattern when the border was mitered at the corners and applied. Another way to insert a line is to do it after the border is applied by plunge routing with a router bit of the same width as the line, and then gluing the line in.

regarding the left handed saw, (was that a joke?) use the right hand end of the bench the way Tom is using the left and end. Flip the saw over and bob's your uncle.

Somehow I missed responding earlier, sorry about that Jim! I don’t think it was a joke because that type of veneer saw has a bent handle such that it can’t just flip over and be used left handed. However there is another type of veneer saw that can be flipped and used the same way. Thanks for watching and being with us! 👍😎

Are you sure titebond 3 doesnt creep? it stays more flexible than any of the others, I find it very hard to believe.
Yes Mark, I do think there are cases where it will creep...but I was assured from a tech at Titebond it is the best PVA they have against it. Funny you mentioned this, I am presently conducting a test on the dry rigidity of the Titebond glues. To eliminate creep altogether, the glue needs to dry hard with little flex. Epoxy works but is too messy, expensive and bleeds through. Unibond 800 is great when you need that added assurance, for things like laminations and tabletop veneering. But check out Unibond 1, it’s a new glue from Veneer Pressing Systems that has the workability advantages of PVA, and the hardness properties close to Unibond 800. Thanks for asking and watching! 👍

Tom, you have some great stuff to share but can you try and keep focus on the process in order to get the length of the video’s down. I know you have all your friends on line with you and it’s easy to get distracted but if you want more views for your content, please get your times down. I do like your content but a lot of people don’t have time to view 1.5 hours every time they want to look at your stuff.

Thanks Steve, I understand your critique and receive what you are saying. I should explain we have two types of videos, the “Shop Night Live” livestream and the live recorded courses. The live recorded courses are project driven, and probably more “all business” like you are looking for. But the Shop night live is intentionally more personal, where I view everyone who wants to watch as my friends...I don’t have a small special group of friends I’m thinking about.
We will be editing more of our content in the coming year that will be posted after the live event for guys like you who are shorter on time and just want the facts of the work, so I hope you will find that more to your liking. I also know people who change the viewing speed, up to two times the speed, and just slow it down on parts that require it.
