A tip for home security, lock the inside doors of the house when you're not using the room, this creates more barriers to people coming in through the windows etc. This is something that people do in South Africa where home invasions happen at a very high rate.
I wish Haz & Lucas would do a podcast specifically for women. Thing seem to be getting more dangerous every year for us. What kind of things to look for in a dog. What kind of weapons to have hidden in your house and where. What to do when your getting followed home ( happened to me twice).
I love having a mix of personalities in my dogs. With having four shepherds I see a bit of everything. One is show/pet lines. She’s not necessarily laid back, but she also doesn’t have what would be an off switch in high drive dogs. She is however the most “protective” of the yard. She patrols, she watches, alerts, etc. Then my Dutch/GSD mix, he’s go go go, and I need to get him into agility, dock diving, etc as he has very high toy drive and ALWAYS wants to play, but can turn it off and cuddle for about five minutes 😂. Then my other two, one is straight protection, the newest will be a Schutzhund dog. The protection dog is exactly what I initially wanted in a dog. He’s a mix of show/working lines. He’s laid back, social, can shut down and just relax, but will absolutely rip someone open if necessary. His standard is off, and all it takes is turning the switch on. Honestly the best thing about him is I could put him in a room with kids and lock the door and nothing would happen to any of them. They’d be covered in slobber but he wouldn’t hurt a single one of them. Most straight protection dogs wouldn’t be able to do that. As for the schutzhund pup I’m still working with the her and where she’ll fit but she has insane drive and is straight working lines.
Dynamite - well done and super useful - things like in a car jacking turn off your car get your kids and wife out first - obvious but if that’s not in your head before it happens - who knows - awesome stuff as usual.
The biggest lesson I learned about carjacking I learned from my mom, who was carjacked, disasterously, in college. I learned that you should never feel sorry for your attacker, to turn off your normal sense of politeness, and get mean. She almost got away from her attacker, injuring him and repelling him, but she was so thoroughly trained to respond to injured people with compassion and politeness, she asked him if he was OK, and HELPED HIM INTO HER CAR😮!!! So, especially for the ladies out there, you don't have to be polite when someone is trying to hurt you.
Getting biten/attacked is nevwr understood fully until it happens to you, for sure. The first thing i said to myself was something a trainwr once ingrained in my brain when teaching play/tug "prey doesn't jump INTO their mouth, it tries to pull away." So instinctively, i pushed my arm in towards the dog, hard. It made them release. But i then didnt expect the regrip as i was turning away which caused the most damage 😅 i respect decoys so much for the dance they do with dogs, it takes such experience and so many hundreds of bites 😂
I've always thought of IGP as MMA and tracking obedience and protection as the disciplines that go into MMA such as kickboxing jiu-jitsu and wrestling.
As a single, disabled woman living in Ontario, the increase in violence is why I decided to get a Shepherd. I also plan to get a Doberman next year. The biggest thing is they deter people from coming close to me or to the house. People find these breeds intimidating. So far my yearling GSD is very committed to keeping strangers away.
Elite member here, also a self defense instructor. Self defense should be simple, as a system. Overly complicated crap is useless. That said, it isn't something that you can learn in a weekend seminar or even in a six week course. You have to put your 10.000 hours in to be unconsciously good at it. Even than, you can't say you are a master, just good. Now think of it: you are going twice a week for one and a half hours to the gym, and train once a week for an hour on your own, you need about 50 years to get that 10.000 hours in. One could say, hey, so much time isn't necessary. My answer woukd be than, well things can turn out good for you, or not. With the time i mentioned, still not a 100% chance, but your chances have increased dramatically.
😮😮😮 Speaking as a Siberian Husky owner . Cobra was attained as a companion and all purpose dog as I head into retirement. Good with family and a lady killer. Looks like a wolf sitting at the front glass and has deterred anyone new from knocking. He has a husky purpose and bikes a mile every other day. Now mixing a seasond breed with a warrior dog is looking for trouble and temperment. My first dog was a Husky Rottie rescue. Loyal and solid not like all the over breeded lines of soft or nervous lines today. But provoked he bit 2 trainers and pulled the jacket off a passers-by's back when ..'can I pet your puppy ?' He would play with you and then nip you. Best personal protection dog with only obedience training. But still a liability. I say maintain breeds true to thier form and abilities unless you are Haz.
Telling people you have "a dog that will bite anyone you tell it to" is as same asinine as walking around telling people you have a black belt in xyz and can hurt anyone with your bare hands.
Really enjoyed. I didn't know Canadian gun laws were so restrictive. I'm an old guy and traveled your highways from the entry ports of Alaska to the northern Gaspe in Perce Quebec. I knew I couldn't carry a pistol but always had my 30-30 rifle with me. Now you can't have a loaded hand gun in your own home? Man, that's crazy to me. In Oklahoma I can conceal carry just about anywhere. Who's safer? I don't really know the answer but, I'll take my chances that I am. Anyway, love your videos. Thanks😅
Watching, should be a great show Haz.. Only problem for me, is that your perspective as far as the legal aspects, is that your in Canada and I'm in Calif.. Wait six months do another show and let a lawyer sit in. Time to shut up and listen.. ;-)
dogs are a massive deterrent. I had a collie x that was useless she loved everyone, she was useless against my stalker. she unfortunelty passed due to cancer after a long life. My stalker continued despite police reports etc, so I got a mali x malamute. he's not a protection dog or even a bite sports dog, he's a scent dog however he is still a massive deterrent since my stalker hasn't been noticed since I got him.
😮😮😮😮😮 AppaRently the best protection dog out of the box is a pitbull mix. There's tons of them around T.O. The poor man's guard dog. On auto pilot. And family pet. The ban is not enforced until they bite. And you are liable for having a substantial pit line. Then you have a criminal and civil lawsuit and heavy damages. Most times it's another dog or innocent bystander. And if it's protection trained at a facility those facts will be revealed in discovery . Using excessive force with intent above reasonable defence. Can only be argued when your life is in danger. No violence allowed when protecting property like a vehicle in your garage. So trained attack dogs are a further liability to deal with. Injuring someone who enters your backyard will end up costing you, but safety first. Hope suggests a viable deterrent dog will suffice. But the thieves have become more diligent. If you're not going to fight then get a personal dog like a doberman, boxer, or.... Rottweiler, they're born to guard no training necessary. Just don't let them loose.
Im a 59yr old female. I get scared going out by myself now. I mean, not that id be a target for anything at my age. But you just never know. These evil people are attacking and raping women way older than me now. Ive got a GSD. I got him at 3mnths of age. Ive worked with him as far as heeling and sitting. I put his prong collar on and he knows its time to work. Ive taken him into stores and people praised how well behaved he was and that they knew he was a service dog because of that lol. My issue is that unless he has a leash on, he just ignores me. He has no recall at all. Hes 19 months old. How do i teach this? Im willing to do the work myself, i just dont know what or how to do it.
Work up to off-leash recall by practicing recall while he's on a long lead (20+ feet), which you can shorten and correct the dog if he doesn't listen to you. Then follow up with a treat or lots of praise when he does come back to you on the long lead. Off-leash verbal control is one of the hardest things to teach without a remote collar so just work at it and you'll see changes over time! GSD are smart and want to please. Right now he probably just isn't positive what you want of him and there's lots of other distractions and more interesting things than coming back to you, so have his favorites -high value treats, ball or toy, etc. :)

People need to stop thinking of the Police/Fire/EMS as first responders. You are the first responder. It's happening to you, you are there already.

A system is huge stops are huge. Training is huge. Levels of deference and aggression is so important and everyone on the same page.
