  • Winner of the 1971 Derby, Mill Reef, has been described as "the most perfect specimen of a small horse" by trainer Ian Balding.
This film looks back at the impact the small, but mighty horse, made on the lives and hearts of all that had the pleasure to work with him.
See who will join him in the history books to take victory in the 2019 Investec Derby on Saturday 1 June - po.st/IDF2019

He was an absolute superstar in a golden era. I've been lucky enough to visit Ian Baldings stables (I lived locally at the time) and what an idyllic setting it's in and Mr Balding and his wife were so generous with their time. An unforgettable memory for me and to walk across that hallowed ground was a privilege.❤️

I'd love to see a couple of Mill Reef's 2 year old races : Coventry Stakes, which he won at Royal Ascot by a wide margin, and the Prix Robert Papin where he lost by a short head to My Swallow in France.

Shame Bill Palmer didn't get to comment as he was the one who looked after him!

Absolutely wonderful racehorse one in a million like Brigadier Gerard who both won from 5 furlongs to a mile and a half. You wouldn't get that ability and greatness today! The late 60s and early 70s has to be the best generation of all in both flat and National Hunt!
