How Thousands Of Indigenous Children Were Stolen From Their Parents

  • For over 130 years till 1996, more than 100,000 of Canada's First Nations children were legally required to attend government-funded schools run by various Christian faiths. There were 80 of these 'residential schools' across the country. Most children were sent to faraway schools that separated them from their families and traditional land. These children endured brutality, physical hardship, mental degradation, and the complete erasure of their culture. The schools were part of a wider program of assimilation designed to integrate the native population into 'Canadian society.' These schools were established with the express purpose 'To kill the Indian in the child.' Told through their own voices, 'We Were Children' is the shocking true story of two such children: Glen Anaquod and Lyna Hart

To all my native indigenous brothers and sisters. We all shared the same pain and strength. But our ancestors would want all of us for our voices and stories to be told of the truth. Keep up your strength indigenous spiritually. A’ho 🪶

It's heartbreaking to think about the history of the Indigenous peoples and the injustices they faced. What do you think could have been done differently to prevent such tragedies? Do you believe history has taught us enough to avoid repeating these mistakes?

My Great Grandmother was a Residential school survivor. She moved away from her reserve (Golden Lake, On) to a small town to have children and she did not register to save them from having to go to "that school.' She died in 1942 and my Grandmother and her siblings were never registered until the 80's, long after their mother had passed. They knew nothing of who they were or where they came from.

As a Catholic, I'm devastated to learn that Church orders were involved with this sinful enterprise that caused so much hurt and death. How they failed to follow the churches teachings of Love your Neighbour as yourself in respecting the cultural traditions of others that were not sinful. Of making respecting the fact each child had a mother and a father to raise them as planned by God. By the Grace of God I echo His Holiness Pope Francis in saying I'm deeply sorry for the pain and suffering caused in Christs name. And that these schools should not have happened. And it has taken so long for the church to acknowledge these sins that were committed.

It’s interesting how Epictetus encourages appearing clueless or stupid in discussions, which might sound counterintuitive at first. This approach can create space to absorb and process information without immediately reacting, which often leads to more thoughtful responses. Have you ever tried taking a moment of silence in a heated conversation to reflect before responding? What do you think might change in a discussion if we allowed ourselves to do this more often?

Makes me angry how the kids are forced to give up their native language. Your language is part of your culture and heritage. Just like the Welsh, Irish, Cornish, Cumbrians and Scots had their languages suppressed for centuries to the point where today most of them don't speak them at all. Very sad.

These people weaponised their own ideology with Christianity for their aim to assimilate and control the masses of people. That is not what the real Christianity is. Islam is completely different. It has no place for the Western world.

This and other atrocities committed by our Masters on indigenous peoples worldwide in their own lands has built up enormous collective karma that is now being inflicted on the native white working class of Britain. It plays out in the whole enforced white guilt, forced multiculturalism, discrimination in the job market, being called racist for being proud of your heritage. All because of the greed of the top 1%. Thanks a bunch.
