      Sadly, it's the same with religion, it cannot be forced on children. However, I believe if a teacher or another student notices someone who may benefit from meditation, that they could suggest to them that they should try out meditation, as there is no harm in doing so.

      It had been more interesting to hear the why meditation do all this things and not only that id do so, is it the relaxing, the thinking och the breathing that do it? I just see meditation as a religious mumbo jumbo form of relaxing while doing nothing and you shall be able to do that in your sofa and with a good book by Stephen Hawking for an example.

      @Peteru69 9 років тому +30

      Jim Engström No. Reading a book won't do. You're not immersed in meditation while your eyes are open and you're concentrating on reading.
      It's not the "doing nothing" that helps. It's the focus on doing nothing at all that removes any thoughts of stress and worry.
      When it's not linked to spiritualism (No, not religion) it's a tool like any other. It's not mumbo jumbo or placebo.
      Here is scientific "proof" (as much proof as you could get) of it's efficiency and you still want to write it off as mumbo jumbo?
      It feels like meditation also broadens your mind and perspective. You will be more open to ideas that otherwise might sound nonsensical. But it all serves a purpose. The benefits to 10-30 minutes of meditation a day are plentiful. And being too stubborn to admit it is counter productive for a healthy mind.
      I hope you'll try it out over a period of time. Stay concious and aware of your mind and thoughts. The ultimate goal would be to have no thoughts in your mind at all. Look at it like reformatting a computer from scratch, installing all programs again and getting rid of all the waste.

    The very core principle of meditation is to gain self-realization (Enlightenment).
    Today, this is oftenly misunderstood. Surely meditation has many undeniable benefits, but for serious practitioners who are in search of reality, meditation is more about attaining desirelessness, detachment, and ultimately residing in the natural state which is known as "Self, Tao, Source, or God" whatever name you wish to give it.
    Ancient sages like Buddha, Lao Tzu, Ashtavakra Gita, Ramana Maharashi etc. all meant the same thing. Attachments and desires leave the mind restless, clinging to external objects. When the attention falls back to one self, mind becomes quiet and abides in its source. Only by watching the mind and clearing its impurities, we discover ourselves as the watcher. It goes beyond this, but ultimately the Self is the only reality. All else is temporary and arises from the Self.
    This sums up my years of study and practice in eastern ancient philosophy.

      How would you define happiness? What is worth attaining?

    • @PhanteusZ
      @PhanteusZ 9 років тому +44

      Noumenal Void True happiness cannot be found in things that change and pass away. Pleasure and pain alternate inexorably.
      " *_The body and the mind are limited and therefore vulnerable; they need protection which gives rise to fear. As long as you identify yourself with them you are bound to suffer; realise your independence and remain happy. I tell you, this is the secret of happiness. To believe that you depend on things and people for happiness is due to ignorance of your true nature; to know that you need nothing to be happy, except self-knowledge, is wisdom._* "

      Nope, no need to attach religious ideas to meditation anymore. Meditation is good for the mind, that's it.

    • @PhanteusZ
      @PhanteusZ 9 років тому +45

      Xeno All concepts, ideas and beliefs are part of the mind. Reality isn't a concept. If you are in search of reality, go beyond the mind altogether.
      This isn't a place for religion where you blindly follow a belief. It is the very opposite of that. That is another common misconception. Observations and being attentive is the key factor in meditation. Do not let the mind waver. Question the existence of absolutely everything.

    Instead of meditating, I've found more success by just being mindful throughout my day. I constantly bring my focus back to the present moment. For example, while sitting in traffic, I focus on the hum of the engine, the cars and drivers around me, and sometimes the little dandelion growing through the crack in the asphalt. While doing dishes, I pay attention to the sound of the water, the smell of the dish soap etc. This withdraws attention from the thinking mind and slowly that voice in the head gets softer.

      That's a form/variation of meditation. The whole idea is to control your thoughts by either focusing on breath or eliminating thoughts in head. Most thoughts are negative and fear and anxiety live in our thoughts. If you can workout your brain to filter and silence thoughts when need be - boom meditation; therefore, what you are doing is still meditation.

      AJ Sanchez Im a born buddhist from sri lanka, most people practise the wrong kind of medition, im gonna say it short and sweet. the real meditation according to the buddha is as follows, keep your body in a relaxed manner, identify yourself, breath as per normal, listen to sounds around you identify them and shrug them off, once you identify the first taught in your mind shrug it off and it usually takes a time of a few micro seconds for the next taught to reach your mind, that moment of "nothingness" is which you should try to maintain and once you practise meditation daily this moment will increase from seconds to mintues to even hours. this was once taught to me by a monk who was living in his life in a forest in sri lanka and it has worked for me since. Dont follow useless money grabbing methods of meditating out ther its not the same. Thanks hope you enjoy your life

    I started meditating because I've heard it's good for taking out stress. The truth is it's way beyond that. Think of your mind as a lake. For your mind to be at his 100%(I mean be focused, know exactly what you want, be fearful...)you have to make sure the lake is still. But, the reality is, for a lot of us, there's a hurricane over the lake. What the meditation does is slowly calm that hurricane until it's gone. Ounce the lake is calm, for many of us, that lake will be calm after many years of hurricane; you will find the answers to all your problems and be in a state of peace.

      ***** No it wasn't. The pure form of meditation called vipassna (now widely practiced by buddhist monks) was practiced originally in India since 4000 - 5000 years ago atleast by vedic indians.
      This practice became extinct and adulterated by some othera with time and then finally lord Gautam buddha discovered it again 2500 years ago and spread it around the world.

      maybe other people did meditation without calling it meditation. when I discovered what we call meditation. I realised I meditate a lot, almost all the time. I can't control when I go in meditation state. but it feels great, so why would I intentionally stop. sometimes I'm just a few minutes away in class. sometimes I miss parts. but my brain picks it up, even while I'm not paying attention. since I can tap in my unconscious mind with meditation. so I just get it from there.

      StitchTehZombie there are different forms of meditation , the one you described is related to a superficial feel for awarness. whilst in hinduism true spiritual meditation with the connection to god occurs when an individual attains divine knowledge aka brahm gyaan. this practice has been around a looongggg time ago. very interesting tho how mediation is subjected to definition 😊

    Meditation Guide for "Newbies":
    1) There are many ways of practicing meditation, but first, you need to understand the real purpose of it which is to shut down your mind, therefore it won't produce thoughts unless you do need them for practical actions. Yes, that means that you are not your mind, the mind is just a tool but we don't get to learn that in school. So, meditation helps you to stay "Conscious", and also help you use your mind when you do need it and shut the excessive thoughts if you do not need them, because otherwise, that's how you start getting negative thoughts and therefore negative emotions, energy, etc. On a spiritual level, and also the reason why by meditating we are trying to shut down the mind is to feel your "True" you, to understand that there is a higher intelligence than the mind and that this last one is just a tool for practical daily use, like solving math problems, but the mind is not good for other things like Love, and Relationships with any living being. So yes, it does improve your life not just physically and emotionally but also and most importantly in every aspect of your life. Sounds amazing right? and it only takes 20 minutes every day

      U know what.. Meditation is just nothing.. There are thousands of other ways.. It's just nothing.. See the scripts.. See sadhguru videos.. U will know what u r missing.. Without even knowing it. The science which is so called modern science is extension of our 5 sense Organs.. Isn't it. We can see cells.. Etc as we increased our eye sight.. Use of telescope.. So we can realize that what we experience through 5 senses are only for survival aspect.. See for an owl life.. Day is night and night is day.v. But at the same time.. For humans for us owl night is our day.. Etc.. So the very way u r experienceing. Life is nothing.. U haven't even experienced full life.. But ur unconscious make u stick there.. So it's like a cycle in which u get traped as u r the cycle creator.. .. But if u wanna know urself more then meditation.. And what is meditation.. See sadhguru video.. Coz the way u know life will change..

    • @LickingKoala
      @LickingKoala 9 років тому +28

      While you sleep, your head keep spinning because you are dreaming, its not really a mental rest... While you meditate, you focus on something that is real (example breath, or anything else), and you practice your mind to keep being peaceful and make it stop spinning.. I never realised how restless was my mind before i started meditating, its fucking crazy... You just come to realize that most of your problems comes from it, by anticipating your future (which doesnt really exist) and worry about your past, which doesnt exist anymore.. peace!

    Theravadin Buddhists DO NOT say Ommm... 😊 they just practice mindfully observing the body and thought processes. Such a practice involves a nonjudgmental way of observing all that goes on with us and around us but does actively involve compassion and kindness towards ourselves and all else that is.
    But that said, Tibetan "Buddhists" use mantras and various yogic practices. Radiation of compassion is #1 on their list. Tibetan "Buddhism" is a blend of Buddhism, yoga, tantra and the ancient Bon practices.

I thought it would just make me a bit more chill and calm but really it was more than that, I procrastinate so much less than before, I'm able to sleep early, wake up early, more focused, I'm able to handle things that used to annoy me, I got more in control of myself, able to resist some urges, I became more productive, I'm in a good state of mind unlike before too. And you have to choose what type of meditation you need at the moment. This is important to achieve the greatest benefit of meditation. This is well described on the Practical Health channel.

    I started meditating around four weeks ago. The first week I had 1 3 minute session every day. The second week, I had 2 5 minute sessions every day. Last week, I had 3 10 minute sessions every day. Now, I’m doing 4 15 minute sessions every day. I’m going off to high school soon, and I’ve been applying for a lot of different career readiness programs and AP courses, and my meditation sessions have really helped motivate me and eliminate a lot of the stress I’ve been feeling. I highly recommend this routine to anyone who has been thinking of trying out meditation. It will change your life.

    As someone with a chronic pain illness, meditation is key to keep me sane and stable during the worst bouts. I cannot thank you enough for posting this, because it really helps others understand that it's not just hippie-dippie stuff :).

      ***** Where do you got this awkwardly specific info about 3 hours per day from?
      Also: How is it a waste of time if this is what someone might enjoy? By that logic you would have to call every recreational activity (playing games, socializing, watching TV, asking greater questions) a waste of time.

    The problem with this video is they don’t talk about how much meditation you need to do in order to see these kinds of benefits and what kind of meditating is best? Other than that great video!

    I've tried meditating but I can't get my brain to shut up.

    • @NickiRusin
      @NickiRusin 9 років тому +1

      You don't get it to shut up, that's what the deep phase of sleep is for.
      You just ignore whatever it says. Don't focus on any thought - instead, try focusing on something automatic you don't normally think about, like breathing. It'll be hard and unusual at first, but it leads to incredible results.

      Meditation is a skill and like any skill, it takes time and effort to do it effectively. The main thing is never get discouraged and keep trying. Eventually, you'll find your own way to meditate that's effective for you and you'll start seeing results.

      externally, yes. but being human, you are filled with all of the suffering from the past and worries of the future. the more calm and concentrated your mind is from meditation, the more likely deep seated fears will come up in small doses as to be released.

    0:20 you make it sound like meditation activates the default mode network and that would be a good thing. The opposite is true however. Meditation helps because it decreases the default mode network.

    This is a really interesting video. Meditation is very healthy and I have practiced it for a few years with ongoing benefits. The word 'meditation; is much like the word 'sports', which encompasses a whole range of different things. Much of the modern trends in meditation find their roots in Buddhism. In a Buddhist context, meditation when combined with ethics gives rise to wisdom; a mind that has sharp wisdom can have greater meditative powers and it can be easier for that person to live an ethical life. The three are synergistic. Buddhist practice can be highly scientific and having experienced Buddhist meditators guide your own practice can be highly rewarding and beneficial.

    Meditation has truly acted a pill in my life. I’m a teenager who was constantly reminded by my anxiety and would make my life miserable. I’m bipolar as well. But when I actually sat down to meditate,the initial days were quite frustrating. But when I became passionate and consistent towards meditation, I felt like I was connected with my body, soul and God. My anger decreased. My memory power increased and I observed myself being more analytical and forgiving. Here’s a piece of advice to everyone from my personal experience, please sit at least 5 mins meditating.

    Great video. It would have been even greater if you would have acknowledged the history of meditation which is an Asan (Kind) in yoga, which is originated from India and Hindus.
    That ommm.. sound has eternal power. We refer to as lord Shiva.
