Wow just received my bit and jig today ,did a trial joint ,set up was easy with the set up jig and it cut a perfect joint the first try , I did 3 passes I was afraid to try it in 1 but I love the results,to me the router table is the most dangerous machine in my shop so I am overly cautious

DrBeaker- So Glad you like the bit!
To make multiple cuts, set the bit up as instructed, then add one or two pieces of 1/8" hardboard to the face of your router table.
Remove one layer after each cut to make multiple step cuts.
Since the tongue is horizontal, the steps in multiple cuts need to be horizontal as well.

I didn't see any mention of the maximum RPM for FitFinder Lock Miter Bit. Other lock miter bits recommend lower speeds (like 10,000 RPM). I noticed that some material is removed after the cutters. This might remove some of the mass moment of inertia, but it doesn't change the diameter of the cutters so they are still going to be going faster. The bit may run cooler.
I went to the link for the bit and there's no mention of needing a variable speed router (or speed control). There's no owner's manual or question/answer link on the website yet.
Even though I am retired, I still haven't forgotten the fundamental principles of engineering.😊

Joseph, the instructions packaged with the router bit recommend 10,000 RPM with a manufacturer's maximum of 18,000 RPM.
The amount of steel removed for the Center Finding Platform has zero influence on the use of this bit.

I used this bit for the first time with red oak to make table legs. Even using three spacers on the fence to reduce the amount of the cut with each pass, I got lots of chatter and some tear out on the knife edge. Any suggestions on how to get a cleaner, smoother cut with less or no chatter?

Craig, Red oak will always be a challenge when milling, it just like to tear out more than other species. Hickory is similar.
My guess is the cut standing up against the fence is more an issue than flat on the table, it is not as easy to maintain the pressure in that orientation.
A pressure board can help, we have plans for one that works with the Router table on the project plans page of our website.
Finally, feel free to call our office at (855) 747-7233 and I will be happy to talk with you about ways to improve the final cut.

Same experience. My fence cuts were disappointing and tore out a lot. I am new to woodworking and I chalk some of my experience to technique. I think the video is too short and does not provide a lot of how-to detail, that is found in other videos. I'd like to see more guidance on fence aligment. How to handle height adjustments when you are not perfectly centered. And how to support pieces that are being routed. There is a lot of helpful videos on this from other providers. For the cost of this bit I think it's worthy of better how to support.

Glad to know I was not the only one with this issue. I will be using it on some walnut and cherry in the future for some boxes I plan to make and hope that with a tighter grain those woods that the result will be better. I did see a video that placed a piece of mdf on top of the face down cut with double faced tape to reduce/eliminate blowing out the knife edge. I won’t be back in the shop for a while , but plan on trying that also. I also wondered what the right rpm setting should be with this bit on hardwood such as oak.@@comfortablynumb1934

@@comfortablynumb1934 We have a full instructional video that shows the entire process: ua-cam.com/video/2zUC3CSFzAQ/v-deo.html
The vertical cut is more difficult because the grain is in a different orientation, but as far as tearout goes, that is best controlled with a split fence to minimize the opening before the bit. See the "Pro Tip" in the video starting at 1:30.
I also invite you to call our office at (855) 747-7233 anytime you have any technical issues with any of our products. We are always happy to speak directly with you to help solve your issues as quickly as possible.
