20:10 This scene is terrifying. Throughout the entirety of the movie so far we've seen Ip Man fight in a mostly passive way. You know the sad thing is, even the general looked at Sato when he shot that man like "Dude, wtf?" . I think even the general thought Sato was unhinged just didn't do anything.
Sato is all about control and using power to domineer over others. He's basically the dark version of what the police captain could have been - waving his gun around to pull order into his grasp where his hands failed. Whereas General Miura at the very least has some degree of honor and genuine respect for people of skill. His first inclination, after seeing Master Ip embarrass 10 black belts in Japanese martial arts wasn't to feel shame or cowed but to reach out to have Master Ip specifically teach his Chinese martial arts to his men; in what is very much a cultural conflict, the general had no issues freely admitting Ip's Chinese style at least on par with the Japanese and his mastery well-worth utilizing. It was a dark page in Japanese history, in the years before and at the beginning of World War II, and they were fully and rightfully the villains in this theater of war. But I appreciate the nuance this film gave Miura, with Sato being genuinely villainous but the general being the antagonist.
Although he’s a badass in any role he plays, I hope he’s not typecasted to play a blind man in Hollywood movies. Anyone who’s seen his movies or is a fan of him knows he’s so much more than playing a blind guy.
Love the Ip Man movies, great reaction. I hope this is the start of more Chinese movie reactions, especially "Hero", "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "House of Flying Daggers" and the two "Drunken Master".
I really wish the guys had seen IP Man before John Wick Chapter 4! Also Donnie Yen is one of the greatest action movie actors of all time, and there is a reason he is blind in JW4 and Rogue On, because otherwise he would be unstoppable like in the movie.

I am not at all into martial arts movies, but hubby is obsessed. I relented for the IP Man series because Donnie Yen ❤ I've now seen all 4 and have watched quite a few other martial arts series with hubby. I still don't love them, but most are very well made with good stories. So happy you guys decided to react to this ❤❤
Besides the storytelling, I think what’s great about the Ip Man movies is because of the exaggerated movements and fighting. Obviously, some of those fights wouldn’t be possible in an actual fight, and obviously, it’s a heightened story of Ip Man with a couple of true elements. But I think they successfully entertained us with the Ip Man movies without sullying Ip Man’s name. When it comes to grounded action though, Donnie’s exceptional at that as well. One of his movies, Flashpoint, is an example where he used MMA (again, obviously there’ll be moments where guys get hit hard in the face and still gets up. But come on. It’s entertainment). He studied and partook in a lot of fighting styles. Dude’s a walking weapon. Lol I recommend watching a couple more of Donnie Yen’s movies (like Flashpoint or Special ID) after all 4 Ip Man movies if you guys get to them.
No one talks about the music, but the score was done by Kenji Kawai. Probably most famous for Ghost in the Shell, but pretty prolific in Japanese media.
Some of the stringed choreographies and “fantastical air movements” you see here are more of your traditional Eastern martial arts choreography. If you look at early Hong Kong martial arts movies, you’ll see a lot of stringed choreographies and “fantastical air movements.” I see that someone here already explained the genre of that, which is "Wuxia." You can go to that comment if you want to know a bit more. So movies like the Ip Man franchise and some of the modern Hong Kong martial arts movies are influenced by the early era. Shang-Chi had a lot of those as well, and you can tell they were heavily influenced by the Hong Kong martial arts movie industry.
That feather duster, Yip Man used to beat Jin is something mothers traditionally used to beat children who misbehaves. It is sort of a humiliation to be beaten with something like that.
it’d be great to see the crew tread into the foreign film category now that the strike is going on in the states, dip their feet into those waters for now. so may under appreciated films from other countries, this was such a great watch! love the content guys!!
It's tradition for me to watch these Ip Man movies, as well as Stephen Chow movies every lunar new year. I hope this means they will eventually react to those, too. I think they would love it.
I wish more people would react to Stephen Chow movies. I've seen a few reactions to Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer but there are other great movies like King of Beggars, Royal Tramp and From Beijing With Love that don't get the attention they deserve.
I was amazed the first time I watched this. I had no idea that it was made in China by a Chinese movie company. Yet it was not only a great story. But it was as good as anything coming out of Hollywood at the same time. Movies are one of the few things America does better than anyone else. But this put that belief to the test in the most amazing way. The following IP Man films continue the story and gives a fairly accurate account of his life. There are some unusual American stars in at least one of the following IP Man films. No spoilers here. But I did enjoy all of them and their production were of the same quality.
Actually, martial arts was/is more of a philosphy than anything. True martial artists incorporate and inorove their form by applying it to, literally everything in life.
Thats why western martial artist hates Asian martial arts because for them they want practical and removed all those philosophy. Without philosophy, what the differences between soldier and martial artist?
This is one of my absolute favorite martial arts series and the true story its based upon is even more harrowing. I love your guys' content and I can't wait to hopefully see you react to the other 3 movies in the franchise.
It's epic to see the story of the man that Bruce Lee called Master. Ip Man is without a doubt one of the most legendary martial artists in the history of the world. Even to this day few martial artists can even begin to match his level of skill. Thank you for reacting to this movie and please react to all of the Ip Man films and Billy Blanks films too.
"The Legend is Born: Ip Man" is set before this from his childhood learning kung fu to becoming a master and meeting his wife. He is from a rich family who let him go to kung fu school at a young age, and his wife is also from a rich family, which is why they have a fancy house.
Unlike a lot of the details in these movies, that one about his rich upbringing is absolutely correct. His father owned several businesses in Foshan, and Chan Wah Shun (Yip Man's first teacher) was coincidently one of his many tenants. Chan Wah Shun tried to discourage the young Yip Man because in that period, martial arts were considered a blue collar pursuit, and therefore he did not want to insult his landlord by teaching his son. Supposedly Yip Man was asked to bring a considerable amount of silver as a downpayment with hopes of further discouraging his interest. However Yip Man got the silver along with his father's blessing to be taught by Chan Wah Shun. Yip Man was his 16th and final student and when Chan died two years later, Yip's tutelage fell to one of his senior brothers - Ng Chung Sok.
Y'all should watch The Man From Nowhere! Amazing fighting, and amazing emotional story! VERY DARK, but filled with so much love and heart! It also apparently is an inspiration for John Wicks creators!
War is the worst of everything. When human beings have to go against weapons. If everyone learns some martial arts, learns the morals of martial arts(which' aimed to keep peace for ordinary people's life, the "hundred surnames" as people call it in Chinese), conflicts would only get solved through martial arts, which even has an entertaining side and aesthetics, there wouldn't be war. War is always caused by people staying behind an army, with too much power for no reason, who's usually a real coward. it requires courage to fight physically and personally with someone, and it requires hard work over years behind. People who can make a respectful fight(physical or mental, winning but at the same time letting dignity to the opponent) are the best kind of people.
Trust me when I say this. That feather duster is way more painful than anything else. Instructions of use: whoop on the ass or on the palm of your hand. It's almost a must have in every Asian household.
So funny you guys are reacting to this now. I've been talking all week about Donnie Yen and explaining Ip Man to everyone who hasn't seen it or heard about it. Amazing actor. Fantastic franchise.
Donnie Yen's protegee Kenji Tanigaki is the fight choreographer and action director for the live action Rurouni Kenshin movies. They're also a solid watch. Tanigaki also directed the Donnie Yen movie called Enter the Fat Dragon. He's also the action director for Phantom Blade 0.
I heard of Ip Man from my Martial Arts teacher, our style is directly descended from him via Wong Lun Chun (sp) who was also Bruce Lee's main teacher. Ip Man was a real guy and while the story may be somewhat "embellished" he was a serious force in Fu Shon province schools. The rapid punch is called a chain punch, and is bloody fast. Imagine getting hit 8 times in two seconds. My instructor without using the chain punch could land 10 hits in about 4-6 seconds. With pads, I've been hit with the chain punch to the chest, it rattles your entire body.
To answer your question, they were good martial artists because they were rich. Almost all of the famous fighters were one of three things. A member of a rich family, member of the royal family, or from either Wudang or Shaolin temple. They were the only ones who would have the time to train properly. Everyone else had to work farming etc.
20:55 this part made me laugh so much when eric was shook of the bone cracking to the leg one was the best laugh I had in a long time this movie was epic the reason I got into martial arts and 10 years later received two black belts, i love blind wave we stand with you guys and support the strike!! for chinese martial art is not just fighting, it's a believe, a way of life, the positive way is to strengthen your body, help those in need, and if one see injustice, step up to help. thats y he didnt take the rice, he never fight for a price, only for honors and justice and to protect his believe. the shot of his swallon fist after the fight shows his regret of using martial art to kill people. also none of the fights happened, ip man was bruce lee's teacher, ip family was rich before the war, and ip man left his wife and family in china and went to hong kong; that's the extent of the truth. also jackie chan is a comedy actor in hong kong, a really good stunt man, but his fights is more of a funny fight.
37:48 You don't need wirework for that... If you do any form of acrobatics or gymnastics, you will understand how easy it is to perform those maneuver mid air. Combine that with martial art training and that counter become a very simple concept.
20:31 I remember someone said the translation was actually “I have to fight 10 people” which either means “10 is a real challenge” or “I’m that pissed that 10 people will suffice” and I don’t know which is more intimidating
I’ve seen this way back 2009. Saw it over 20 times. Ip-Man is a Cantonese, martial arts from Hong Kong. It’s the story of Bruce Lee’s master Ip-Man but in Cantonese it’s pronounced Yip-Man.
Practitioner here; love the video guys. I love this movie; but funnily enough, as cool as all this Wing Chun looks, none of it works like that while fighting lol. Those chain punches have 0 power in them. but again, this is a movie as you well know. The most legit thing in these movies are the weapons her uses - the long pole, the short blades in Ip Man 2. Such good use of those. Keep the videos coming!
I don't recall if it's said in the film or someone else in the comments, but the scene of Man training the workers which are predominately women is an interesting choice because of the history of the discipline he practices. Look up Wing Chun; it's an interesting read.
Yeah, it is said some monks teach the Girls Who got harass by dirty Men so he teached those Girls and later they teach every woman wing chun. This is why Asia doesnt need feminist because we here never saw one gender is lesser like West did
A side note to this film: the war crimes that the Japanese committed in China and other Asian countries were way much worse and on a way larger scale than what the film showed. But the West led by the US choose to ignore or down-play the inhumanity of the Japanese army during WWII in the main-stream media and education because they want Japan to be on their side and help contain China. The fact is Japan was not just an enemy country to the US during WWII, but an enemy to the entire human race, actively committing genocides against multiples nations. But this part of the history is nearly completely absent in the public awareness in the West. (I don't mean this comment as a criticism of this film, just some food for your thoughts). Peace
yeah and it’s crazy to know that all those disgustingly horrible atrocities they committed was less than a hundred years ago… really goes to show how humanity is still barbaric
Asian martial arts movies are by far the best martial arts production out there. Even professionals and actors have said that numerous times. Also, most Asian martial artist actors don't use stunt men, they do everything themselves and they will put themselves in serious pain and injuries for the sake of the movie. They go above and beyond. Are they realistic in the sense that kicking someone right in front of you can launch them 10 feet through the air? No, not at all. But are they realistic with their moves and training? Yes, definitely. Very hard core. Love your guy's reaction!!!
This is definitely one of the best martial arts films of all time. The whole series manages to maintain this level of hype for 4 movies, which is wild.
The kung fu asside (wich is incredible by the way) this movie is so good showing part of the abuse commited by the japanese empire pre WW2. What they did to China and koreia was brutal
Actually chinese got worst than Korean, seriously Korean love to portray they got worst but Korean never got into any experimen that chinese suffers. Back then in Korea, Korean can learn to higher education in japanese universiti as long as they use japanese name and cultures. This wont be happened to chinese at all
It's just a shame that the subtitles are basic. For example, 7:17 I think Ip Man actually says "You don't have any brains." and 10:45 The old guy actually replies "You think it's me or something? It's Ip Man." A lot of these characters have more personality than the subs let on.
Two other movies where Donnie Yen SHINES as both leading role & action director: - Kill Zone (or SPL), 2005 - Flashpoint, 2007 Both movies are cops VS mob martial arts movies. Flashpoint's final fight is one of Donnie Yen's career highlights!
Never forget that Ip Man's sons actually were consultants and wing chun advisors for these films. These films are essentially their ways of sharing his legends and his story.

Ip-man will always have a special place in my heart
Wow! Happy to see this. My wife is Chinese so we have been watching these in the last couple weeks and I really liked them.
I am not at all into martial arts movies, but hubby is obsessed. I relented for the IP Man series because Donnie Yen ❤ I've now seen all 4 and have watched quite a few other martial arts series with hubby. I still don't love them, but most are very well made with good stories. So happy you guys decided to react to this ❤❤
My granddad is illiterate, he loves this film but he calls it pennyman. Since the Ip looks like 1p to him. Always cracks me up.
When i was a child, I would stop and stare at the dvd kiosk at the mall because of that 1v10 scene just playing on repeat.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!
Thank you so much for reacting to it,you guys are the best!
Honestly Ip Man and it's sequels are so good! Please do more if you are able to
Besides the storytelling, I think what’s great about the Ip Man movies is because of the exaggerated movements and fighting.
The story was terrible.
@@flaggerify Cool. To each their own.
@@flaggerify alright, next one to the podium.
No one talks about the music, but the score was done by Kenji Kawai. Probably most famous for Ghost in the Shell, but pretty prolific in Japanese media.
Please do ip man 2,3,4 that’s so much fun to watch!
ip man 4 got bruce lee
All of the Ip Man movies!!!!
Yes! The literal translation of Kung Fu, or Gong Fu, is spending time on skillful work, hard training or endeavor.
Thats why western martial artist hates Asian martial arts because for them they want practical and removed all those philosophy. Without philosophy, what the differences between soldier and martial artist?
Intellectual Property Man!! Let's go!!!
This is one of my absolute favorite martial arts series and the true story its based upon is even more harrowing. I love your guys' content and I can't wait to hopefully see you react to the other 3 movies in the franchise.
Donnie yen's flash point movie is pretty awesome as well, the last fight is so good. You can feel their exhaustion.
YES, this comment needs more attention than it deserves!
JESUS he fists just like a MACHINEGUN
Yuan's brother was one of the Kung Fu Master in Kung Fu Hustle
Y'all should watch The Man From Nowhere! Amazing fighting, and amazing emotional story! VERY DARK, but filled with so much love and heart! It also apparently is an inspiration for John Wicks creators!
Yes! Finally you guys are watching this awesome film.
IP man vs 10 people is the best fight scene ever. I can't think of anything more impressive in film history
Trust me when I say this. That feather duster is way more painful than anything else. Instructions of use: whoop on the ass or on the palm of your hand. It's almost a must have in every Asian household.
Great movie, love it. I hope this leads to more martial arts movies being reacted to.
Can't wait to see part 2, 3, and 4 from your guys!! 🙏🏻❤️
These movies are so good! Story is great as well, love the way they filmed the fight scenes
To answer your question, they were good martial artists because they were rich. Almost all of the famous fighters were one of three things. A member of a rich family, member of the royal family, or from either Wudang or Shaolin temple. They were the only ones who would have the time to train properly. Everyone else had to work farming etc.
IP Man is not any of them
Love this series, hopefully you guys get to the rest of them at some point.
The very first subtitled movie I've ever watched.
Hell yeah, top tier martial arts movie! Maybe the best ever. Done to perfection.
Blind Wave really should watch Scissor seven, its such an underrated show and deserves a lot more attention.
PREACH bro! So true!
Does it have 7 Seasons?
@@fabianrocha9924no BUT IT SHOULD!!!!
Waited ages for this! Finally! Amazing movie! Great reaction as usual Wave Crew!
The 2nd one is about Ip Man’s life as he and his family left to reside in Hong Kong after the ending fight of this one…👌🏻
-man wields a Halberd-
"UOH HE GOT A SWORD!!!"
Amazing reaction
20:55 this part made me laugh so much when eric was shook of the bone cracking to the leg one was the best laugh I had in a long time this movie was epic the reason I got into martial arts and 10 years later received two black belts, i love blind wave we stand with you guys and support the strike!! More martial arts movies ❤️🔥
for chinese martial art is not just fighting, it's a believe, a way of life, the positive way is to strengthen your body, help those in need, and if one see injustice, step up to help. thats y he didnt take the rice, he never fight for a price, only for honors and justice and to protect his believe. the shot of his swallon fist after the fight shows his regret of using martial art to kill people. also none of the fights happened, ip man was bruce lee's teacher, ip family was rich before the war, and ip man left his wife and family in china and went to hong kong; that's the extent of the truth. also jackie chan is a comedy actor in hong kong, a really good stunt man, but his fights is more of a funny fight.
This is so exciting. One of my favorite movies of all time. Next to the Kung fu panda series I'm excited to see their journey with Ip Man
LETS GOOOO!!! Been wanting this one for a while
37:48 You don't need wirework for that...
Isn’t wing chun less about power and more about shots to the eyes, throat, nards and other soft weak spots?
Love these movies! Keep going with the series!
I'm so surprised you are watching IP man. I found this years ago and man the fighting was amazing.
There are actually 5 more IP Man movies, including the prequel that didn't star Donnie Yen; 6 in total in this series.
And there’s the master z movie
Didn't know Jason Mamoa switched to reacting to videos now.
I gasped the loudest when I saw that you reacted to this. HELL YEAH!
I grew up watching martial arts movies because of my dad. I may not remember a lot of them but I'm very fond of that subgenre(?)
IP Man is one of those movies that never loses its entertainment value - fun ride every time
Love your reaction on this! There's another good one called 'The Grandmaster' with Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi in it and it's also about martial arts
Love your guy's reaction!!!
omg, now you guys defiantly have to do reactions of the other Ip man movies
This is a very underrated movie to UA-cam reactions
Idk why because I would've thought many people would be interested in watching
I can't remember what brought to watch IP Man back in the day, but I was so excited when I heard he had been cast for Rogue One.
I like how the guy sitting on the left is taking notes, makes me feel appreciated haha idk why
This is definitely one of the best martial arts films of all time. The whole series manages to maintain this level of hype for 4 movies, which is wild.
(At 20:38) When he has to fight 10 black belts, I don't think he was trying to show off. I think he was set an example or proving a point.
Two other movies where Donnie Yen SHINES as both leading role & action director:
- Kill Zone (or SPL), 2005
- Flashpoint, 2007
Both movies are cops VS mob martial arts movies. Flashpoint's final fight is one of Donnie Yen's career highlights!
Great Franchise! I also love Blood and Bones. Michael Jai White's fights are awesome!
Finally!!! I've been waiting for you to react to this and so much more. I'm so excited for your new schedule as well. Spy x Family, The Glory!!!
I remember this movie from childhood. glad you guys like it!
My dreams have finally been realised
Never forget that Ip Man's sons actually were consultants and wing chun advisors for these films. These films are essentially their ways of sharing his legends and his story.
I fricking love this film, so glad yuy guys did too.
“Is he a good fighter that’s also rich?” Didn’t know ip man is the ancient batman
