Everytime I hear the MAPLE LEAF RAG, I think of the 1970s Walt Disney Mouseketeers gleefully tap dancing their hearts out to the strains of this classic piece.

Thanks, though the title is silly. Jazz can be and is as serious as any classical masterpiece. It’s the listener who chooses whether or not to take music seriously.
He’s speaking to an audience predisposed to reject these new influences in music. In a stilted language that he calculated they would understand. To try to crack their resistance. He chose not to say “like it or suck, fools!!” We can discuss whether his approach was the best way to serve this excellent music or not.
That was the terminology of the day, now it is not so strange to talk about. You have to remember back then, there were extremely few people who “did both,” very few musicians who experienced or even understood both styles of classical and jazz.
I had to Google the term “Sal Hepatica”, (@5:32, following from his comments after @5:03). It was name of a mineral salt laxative that was produced and marketed by Bristol-Myers from its inception in 1887, becoming its first nationally recognized product in 1903, until 1958. When dissolved in water, it was said to reproduce the taste and effect of the natural mineral waters of Bohemia. (per Wikipedia) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sal_Hepatica
Lincoln/Ford presents Leonard Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic. This channel has "Rhythm" as well. I don't have any more. Look under "The Creative Performer" as well.

RHAPSODY IN BLUE is a masterwork that skilfully combines elements of symphonic music and jazz.
I started watching Young Peoples Concerts shortly after this broadcast. This was one i always wanted to see. thank you for putting it on You Tube
Had Gershwin lived a longer lifespan, one can only wonder he might have gone on to accomplish. Rest in peace, George.
Wonderful. Thanks for sharing this. An excellent time capsule.
Fantastic. Thanks for the upload. Bernstein, perhaps, the best at making music accessible that ever lived.
I can listen to the Maestro all day long.
Maestro Bernstein's coverage of Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde" begins at the 13:13 munute mark of this video.
Starting at the 30:42 minute mark, there is an excellent solo by the Philharmonic's principal clarinetist, Robert McGinnis (1910-1976).
So great! Do you happen to know who the saxophonist was?
I mean Bernstein is all well and good but can we all agree the real art is the insane poetry in that car commercial? No wonder the US got addicted.
Thanks for the upload! This is precious

Look at all of those legends sitting in that orchestra!
Love the Lincoln ads.
I like that the Mark IV Continental in the first ad had the license plate "AD•19•59" @12:17.
The "Good Evening Friends " phrase is also heard in Rhapsody in Blue~

Right. I hate the phrase. I wonder if Lenny really came up with that title.

Reger.
@@Twentythousandlps Oh, Max. Got it. Thank you.
At 0:16, Bernstein said "[...] welcome you again to our series". What series did he mean? It's certainly not his YPC or Omnibus.
Ford/Lincoln Presents Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, which ran from 1958 to 1962.

Anyone else wish he’d had played the entirety of The Maple Leaf Rag??
Only if he did it at the right tempo, not the one here.

Was that Cessna 310 by that continental?
Was this one episode of a series? If so, do you have more 🙏♥️?
