    My Dad had “Switched On Bach” on 8-track cassette when I was a kid. I listened to that over and over with his over-the-ear headphones.
    Being struggling young parents, they didn’t seem to care about it (anymore), but I was entranced. You could hear every nuance of every far out sound. It was magical.
    What a treat to find this some 50 years later!

    My claim to fame ;-) is that I turned pages for Michael Korn when he was organist at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Harrisburg, Pa. We were both in high school, and he went on to have a brilliant career as organist and choral conductor.

    An absolutely entertaining way to present classical music... Bernstein is such a captivating presenter. Witty and yet profound, such a great teacher.

    On March 20, 1948, he gave a concert in the Great Hall of the Academy of Music in Budapest. Bernstein was completely unknown in Hungary around this time, so the concert hall was only half full at the start of the concert. However, the concert was also broadcast on the radio, and many of those who listened to the event on the radio ended up going to the concert. According to Bernstein's recollection, when he looked around the auditorium before the second play, the hall was already full. And after the break, the crowd filled the concert hall to capacity, and many of those stuck outside loudly demanded to get in. After the show, he held an impromptu musical gathering for those interested in the dressing room: he played the piano for them and gave a short lecture on jazz and modern music. He was then carried back to the hotel by the audience on their shoulders.
    It is no coincidence that this TV program was also very popular in Hungary.

    They keyboardist of The New York Rock & Roll Ensemble was Michael Kamen, who later did a lot of movie scores, and perhaps most famously was the conductor and arranger with Metallica for their “S&M” live album.

    Unfortunately, the Moog onstage did not do anything except blink some lights: at the time, there was no way to record the actual setup, other than to make an audio tape recording, which was what Lenny activated on top, the Ampex 602. Still, it was an historic endorsement.

      He did say the piece was pre-recorded, but it was still a nice demonstration for the audience of what a Moog synthesizer looks like.

    The second performance reminds me of a Bugs Bunny cartoon: Where Leopold (Bugs) walks in the concert hall toward the podium, and the musicians all whisper "Leopold!"

    Leonard Bernstein did a very great as a conductor and keyboard player. No notes in front of him....All notes were inside of his brain?!!!

      It is said that Maestro George Szell was asked why he conducted with the orchestral score in front of him, to which he answered: "Because I can read music."

    It's sad that they had to record the Moog ahead of time when there was a perfectly good keyboard Bernstein could have played onstage.

    • @karlosed
      @karlosed  2 роки тому +3

      It seems that this version of the Moog didn't have the required interface for make the live performance possible, only for recording and playback.

    • @eddievhfan1984
      @eddievhfan1984 Рік тому

      It's possible he could've played one of the voices, but that synth didn't have enough modules to replicate the recording in real time, and even if it did, you would've needed at least 4 or 5 separate keyboard controllers-I can't recall if Moog offered a duophonic keyboard controller at the time that aired.
