Years ago a foursome I was playing in was 2 groups behind Coach Knight. He was having a really bad day golfing and the foursome behind him laughed . I`m not sure if it was directed at Knight or what. For some reason, he thought it was me because he confronted me out in the parking lot. I told him " coach, do you really think I would go out my way to piss you off ? You could easily kick my ass" . He walked back to the club house and didn`t say another word.
on his old Indiana University radio call-in show on Tuesday night (?) i think, Knight used to open his mail on the air and carry on this hilarious dialogue as he flipped thru letters and fishing catalogues. yes, Knight can be a world class SOB - and i would never have wanted to play for him - but he is a genius coach and an extremely intelligent person. you can pick that up right away from his sense of humor. these appear to be out-takes from a golf show he must have done in the off-season. he is too good of a coach to be good at golf.

Yes he had his many faults, but discipline in an upbringing and an Army philosophy was of great moral value back in the day. Those Championships teams wouldn't have won without his boot up their asses. That being said I realize that basketball being a religious zeal in Indiana, Coach Knight got spoiled into doing things his way. The ole, "My way, or the wrong way" philosophy. The University and The State of Indiana let him do it for far to long. The great captain lost control of his ship a long time ago, and it broke my heart to see it sink. Broke Neil Reeds heart to the point where he died at the young age of 36 back in 2012. God forgive us for the hard time we gave that young man back then in coach's "unworthy" defense. That school hasn't even existed for almost 60 years. It also seems very appropriate that the longest winning streak under him was broken in South Bend, Indiana by Notre Dame. Coach Wooden became a victim of his own success in a way. When you have all the best players from the United States, how much of the credit does the coach get versus the players? That has been a major debate with no clear answer. Even the best players still need a decision maker to put everyone in their correct spot, manage practice, manage the games, understand what skills the players have, how everyone matches with each other and develop all of their skill base. Any way around it we know Coach Wooden had skills!
