I sat next to Bob and his wife Delores on a 7 hour flight. They were two of the most lovely people I have ever met. I believe it was a return flight of one of his last USO Christmas tours. A bright spot in my life.

@@XR-ok6gr poor Susan and Kelly Ford. Their story broke my heart when I read it. Hopefully Susan is still alive, if so she'd be 71. Bob Hope really was human scum. Many of the celebrities they had to service, I was also very surprised by. But she had Ted Gunderson, (retired FBI agent) defending her, so it definitely raised credibility. Also her daughter being institutionalized did it for me. Do you remember reading how brutal Frank Sinatra was to her? God has a special place reserved for them

Met Bob Hope on a cruise ship of all things back in the eighties! He did a show and I bumped into him both of us lost looking for correct deck! Nice guy went to his room got autograph! True gentleman; not a trace of arrogance ! Absolute respect for what he did for the troops! RIP BOTH BOB AND DELORES !

    •  4 роки тому +1

yeah, what he did for the troops. I fly in and out of Chu Lai airport sometimes and I always think of Hope. He was a war hero. So was Carol Lombard who died raising money for the troops. I love how he likes to boast about being rich. He was rich, but he's having fun with people too. He's another poor guy that ended up with a lot of money. He knows he's lucky. when he brags, he's giving thanks to God. Believe me.

I met BH at the Bob Hope Classic at Epsom in 1980. I was a golf caddy working for Dickie Henderson the British entertainer. The fourball consisted of the great man himself, Dickie, Seve Ballesteros and Peter Butler the local pro. Believe me it was five hours of comedy all the way around the course. Also, Bob took a shine to my 11 year old daughter who came with us and gave her rides on his caddie cart and gave her fresh orange juice out of his crystal decanter he carried on it. A wonderful memory for us both.

We flew him into our base one night in the late 70's for a benefit in his honor, our plane landed about 10 minutes before the benefit, he got off the plane and talked to the 4 of us aircraft mechanics asking us where we were from etc. His handler told him he was running late, and he said "Really they can wait", he leaned against the base commander's staff car and told us about 20 mins. worth of jokes you wouldn't hear on any Bob Hope Special. After the benefit he was driven out to the flightline to get on the plane. He got out of the car and said, "Hey, where are my boys." So, we came in out of the shadows, and he told us another 20 mins of jokes. The plane fly off and we looked at each other and said did you think of getting an autograph.

Most people do not remember what "curb feelers" were for, but they were because most folks had those gangster white wall tires and the curb feelers were there to help keeping you from scraping the white walls against the curb. I had them on my '49 Mercury and I loved those white walls. Every Saturday morning I would go out with a bucket, brush, old dutch cleanser and scrub those beauties and touch up any spots with white shoe polish. Boy, those were the days. I was 19. As for Bob, I think his best joke was when he was sued by the Waldorf Astoria when he said on his show that the rooms were so small, even the rats were stoop shouldered. They said they would drop the suit if he would apologize. So on his show, he apologized and said the rats at the Waldorf Astoria were "not" stoop shouldered. What a hoot.

I recall Barbara Walters asking Bing Crosby if he was rich/wealthy. He said "Nooo...". He said that Fred MacMurray was rich, however, due to land holdings. In 2017 dollars, both Hope and Crosby would have been worth about $200 million each. Can only imagine what MacMurray was holding back then.

Hope bought a lot of prime California property back when it was dirt cheap. It increased in value tremendously, as prime RE tends to do. He could, with a straight face, say he wasn't enormously wealthy if he thought about what he had paid for the land as opposed to what it was worth at the time of the interview. He and Crosby would go back and forth about how poor the one (speaking) was and how rich the other was. Both were rich enough, both were extremely good with money (as were many of the old timers - Moe from the Three Stooges was actually an old real estate guy from before he even started the Stooges). But he's not being cute, he wasn't ThAT rich, and these guys who worked during the Depression always knew the value of a Dollar.
