That's all. At that time a lot of people argued that manual lens were actually better than auto focus lens. Substitution of film by a sensor doesn't change the basic principles of optics.

I have the Ricoh! It has a dust issue. Best visible at small aperture. Then I find the in and out moving lens a bit rickety! Thanks a lot for the Review.
XF10 is nearly 2 years old now - and even on release, I know the AF issues were publicised. I'd love to see an update of the XF - at a higher price point even - getting closer to the X100 performance (maybe even with an X-Trans sensor), but same form factor. I had the Ricoh GRIII from lens rentals and the largely digital controls combined with awful battery life just put me off.
I am a die-hard fujifilm fan. But the images speak for themselves, the Ricoh is a much better pocket camera. Totally worth the extra cash over the fujifilm.

Good review, thanks. Did you update the firmware on the Fuji? I just bought an XF10 new in the UK, and it shipped with version 1.0. The updates fix a lot of the AF issues, although honestly it's still not terrific. (I had a GRII for a while and I'd say the new Fuji's AF was at about that level.) Apart from price, I had a lot of trouble with sensor dust with the GR, and I suspect that retractable lens doesn't help, so that steered me towards the XF10. One thing, the flash was removed from the GR3 to make room to house a bigger focus drive motor according to a Ricoh engineer. Also the Ricoh fancies a magnesium frame. It’s comparing a 911 Porsche to a Toyota celica basically.
I got the XF10 as a gift and the image quality surprised me given it's price. It's got it's quirks and a hotshoe would be great, but all in all I really like it and for some reason it feels so much better in the hand than my old GRII, not plasticky at all. It's supposedly a lot better due the feature jrobo mentioned. However, that lens on the Ricoh moves way more than the lens on the XF10. Much larger exchange of air taking place. Time will tell, I guess.
I own the Ricoh GR mk I. I own the XF10. The trick with the XF10 is to accept it for what it is. And what it is happens to be relatively cheap, cheerful and capable of amazing images. The Ricoh GR III, like my mk I, wins on the nuances. How much that matters depends on your priorities. Spot on observation with respect to the bloody Fuji lens cap btw.
Thank Goodness Matt Granger . Finally a REAL Fair Comparison. XF10 is quirky with focus to say the least. BUT. it is capable of excellent results and the Colors are way nicer in your shots. The GR has a green cast to me.

I agree. I'm drawn to the Fujifilm X100V partly because of the retro aesthetics and optical viewfinder. But I'm a newbie, and the X100V is $1395. I like the aesthetics of the XF10, and since I'm just starting, is at a better price point... but no optical viewfinder.
Thanks for your insights and the work you put into making this video. You convinced me that I don't want the Fuji camera. It's too bad that we have to sacrifice the flash for the IBIS, but photography is full of compromises. I'll take the IBIS over a flash any day.
While you mentioned the IBIS of the Ricoh, you didn't make use of it. That is in lower light and without tripod, as would be the case as everyday companion. In these situations, the IBIS makes all the difference. (former owner of the X70, now Ricoh GR III)
The Ricoh menus are great and maybe better and the Ricoh has intervelometer shooting. As you say Ricoh has the edge. Price may drop soon as apparently a mark 4 version coming.
Checking now in 2023, the Fuji is almost $800. I'm guessing they adjusted (doubled) their price due to interest . TheRicoh is now almost $1,000. At this point, I'd go Ricoh
Matt, the glaring error in your review is the standout feature of the Ricoh is IBIS. you should have compared some low light shots where a 1/3rd second exposure setting was required. I would prefer IBIS over inbuilt flash. Ricoh also have a small flash for the GRIII. www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/accessory/flash/af201fg/index.html Otherwise good review.
@@mattgranger Yes you did but you didn't demonstrate it's serious real world benefits. I think you should have as it is the main difference between the GRII and the reason why the flash was omitted on the GRIII. Thanks for the review. I think it was quite fair.
@@mattgranger In the point and shoot camera it is. Try taking a low light photo without flash and see how they compare? I prefer a soft natural light to a harsh flash.
I got my Fuji xf10 for 325 brand new in an amazon sale and for that price no camera comes close to it Make sure you have high performance mode on , make sure the firmware is updated , make sure you go through the settings and configure the q button and all the settings You even get classic chrome and a flash 🤷🏻♂️ Both are great cameras but after my dust issues with the Ricoh grii I’ve been put off them , the Fuji xf 10 also survived a month in dusty rural Cambodia , a trip that broke my grii the year before I’d love to try the Ricoh griii but i also think the Fuji xf10 is one of the most under rated cameras maybe ever 🤷🏻♂️
Fantastic comparison and great photoshoot with Shakira! Hopefully there is a famous Fuji firmware upgrade coming or a new version of the camera down the road as the Fuji colours and film simulations are second to none.
I own the Pentax K-1 and had to incresse the "CLARITY" and "SHARPNESS" to the maximum value for optimal results, as by default this camera delivers rather soft images. I was shocked, the change was simply brutal, so much that I don't understand why Ricoh (Pentax) decided to set those soft/poor default settings. Were you shooting the Ricoh GR III with default settings? I think probably that's the reason why the Ricoh shows softer images than the Fujifilm.
mauricio lacruz the xf 10 has awesome Fuji jpegs and supports classic chrome etc .... I shoot Sony but I love my Fuji xf10 for a carry everywhere and I also notice the colours and rendering always stand out ✌️
@@buxz777 I used a Sony CyberShot DSC-P200 maaany years ago. The card slot got damaged when trying to insert another Sony card and it never worked again, but I was extremely satisfied with that camera: very pleasing colors, sharpness, good low light performance (for a compact camera), etc. Then I blught another compact camera: a Fujifilm FinePix F100fd wich I again was very satisfied with. Then it came the time to jump to APS-C reflex Canon (600D and 7D) and APS-C compact Nikon (Coolpix A). More satisfied with the Nikon. Then jumped to FF Pentax K-1 and the two I'm using now are the Pentax K-1 and the Nikon Coolpix A. Both stunning. But still crying for my Sony P-200... 😪
I love the Latino music. Thanks anyway for the video. I've yet to decide whether to buy the Ricoh or the Fuji. I love travelling and I prefer to carry a pocketable camera on the go and be able to shoot simultaneously.
Fuji has the best photo science for people in my opinion. That said, the Ricoh is better in all other regards and as Matt mentioned, color can be fixed in Lightroom. Due to pocketability and ibis, I even would pick this over the x1000v.
I don’t have any cameras or lenses with a built-in lens cover, so I don’t understand why the separate lens cap is so annoying. The unreliable focusing of the Fuji is an obvious disadvantage.
The Ricoh is just too expensive. Both need an EVF, fail to see how manufacturers believe users can properly seen the rear screens in daylight!!! Appreciate that the U beaut Ricoh has an additional viewfinder, at additional cost. Both too expensive for what they offer.
I’m going for the Ricoh but the question is : GRII or GRIII cause you can find the II brand new 350€ cheaper. That’s a big difference. I’m not sure yet 😬
Old topic and has been covered by many channels. I have the GR3, wouldn't trade for a XF10 for $450 change. The GR3 ergonomics and designed for street shooting is much underappreciated. Hard to point your figure on but noticeable little nice touches everywhere throughout the shooting experience. Paired with a Kenko magnetic 32mm CPL, a Q10ii wireless flash, the GR3 is pretty much perfect for everyday shooting.
I have the original GR 16 Mp version. I would say the Canon M6 Mk2 with its 22mm f2.0 lens beat them both. I bought one late last year. Its more versatile and still have the option to change lens but I use it with the 22mm f/2.0 most of the time.
I actually own both the M6 II and the Ricoh GR III. The M6 II is arguably the much more capable camera all around. But it doesn't fit in your pants. Combine that with a razor sharp lens and IBIS, and you have a winner for everyday carry. Everything else is bested by the M6 II, if pocketability is not paramount.
Has anyone gone from an X100v series to X10? I realise x100v is superior in every way, but am finding pocketability being an issue, i used to have the older ricoh with me way more often than i do the bulkier and heavier x100v now. X10 being fairly old and inferior AF, Im also contemplating the grIIIx but again had issue with ricoh in the past, burnt board, dust etc This is to take occasional shots, street, travel and evening shots mainly
If the GR III seems expensive at $899 compare to the Leica Q and it will seem a raging bargain. There isn't much the GR III can't do at a very high level.
My personal comparison of Fuji X70 and Ricoh GR III is way sharper and the Fuji is always a bit soft. I’d take the Ricoh all day long. And yes, Fuji lens hoods piss me off.

While you mentioned the IBIS of the Ricoh, you didn't make use of it. That is in lower light and without tripod, as would be the case as everyday companion. In these situations, the IBIS makes all the difference. (former owner of the X70, now Ricoh GR III)
I'm sticking with my Nikon Coolpix A.
Would love to see an update to the Coolpix A!
fucking thing is OLD
I also have and still use extensively a Nikon Coolpix A and I'm in love with it. 👍🏻
The GRiii has phase detection doesn't it? My GRii is quite quick to get focus so can only imagine the addition of PDAF makes a nice difference.
The Ricoh menus are great and maybe better and the Ricoh has intervelometer shooting. As you say Ricoh has the edge. Price may drop soon as apparently a mark 4 version coming.
The Fuji has intervalometer too
Where to buy xf10?
Checking now in 2023, the Fuji is almost $800. I'm guessing they adjusted (doubled) their price due to interest . TheRicoh is now almost $1,000. At this point, I'd go Ricoh
I got a refurb GR III from Ricoh for $599. Consider that if/when offered.
Ron Scibilia where at?
@@mjztx Ricoh itself. They had a flash deal on refurbs. Check them.
Matt, the glaring error in your review is the standout feature of the Ricoh is IBIS. you should have compared some low light shots where a 1/3rd second exposure setting was required. I would prefer IBIS over inbuilt flash.
Ricoh also have a small flash for the GRIII. www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/accessory/flash/af201fg/index.html
Otherwise good review.
Pretty sure I mentioned the IBIS
@@mattgranger Yes you did but you didn't demonstrate it's serious real world benefits. I think you should have as it is the main difference between the GRII and the reason why the flash was omitted on the GRIII.
Thanks for the review. I think it was quite fair.
Enjoy your GR. Ibis is not a replacement for flash.
@@mattgranger In the point and shoot camera it is. Try taking a low light photo without flash and see how they compare? I prefer a soft natural light to a harsh flash.
@@photocraigo9474 One could use flash other than low-light situations. Fill-flash for outdoor portraits or backlit scene for example.
the keyboard looks nice, what's the name of that keyboard ?
It is a normal keyboard with a special cover: geni.us/wDAYAga
@@mattgranger cool thanks man :)
I got my Fuji xf10 for 325 brand new in an amazon sale and for that price no camera comes close to it
Make sure you have high performance mode on , make sure the firmware is updated , make sure you go through the settings and configure the q button and all the settings
You even get classic chrome and a flash 🤷🏻♂️
Both are great cameras but after my dust issues with the Ricoh grii I’ve been put off them , the Fuji xf 10 also survived a month in dusty rural Cambodia , a trip that broke my grii the year before
I’d love to try the Ricoh griii but i also think the Fuji xf10 is one of the most under rated cameras maybe ever 🤷🏻♂️
Give me a link to buy please
Good review matt
Fantastic comparison and great photoshoot with Shakira! Hopefully there is a famous Fuji firmware upgrade coming or a new version of the camera down the road as the Fuji colours and film simulations are second to none.
the colors of the Ricoh are incredible, more cinematic
I am as Fuji fan but the GR kills it.
Great comparison
I own the Pentax K-1 and had to incresse the "CLARITY" and "SHARPNESS" to the maximum value for optimal results, as by default this camera delivers rather soft images. I was shocked, the change was simply brutal, so much that I don't understand why Ricoh (Pentax) decided to set those soft/poor default settings.
Were you shooting the Ricoh GR III with default settings? I think probably that's the reason why the Ricoh shows softer images than the Fujifilm.
what is the opening music theme
if they release an upgraded xf10 ,I would get it
I prefer the look of the images coming from the Fuji, they look crisper, more contrasty and better colored. 🤷🏼♂️
mauricio lacruz the xf 10 has awesome Fuji jpegs and supports classic chrome etc .... I shoot Sony but I love my Fuji xf10 for a carry everywhere and I also notice the colours and rendering always stand out ✌️

I used a Sony CyberShot DSC-P200 maaany years ago.
Thank you, I found this video really interesting and helpful. I own the XF10 but was not sure whether the GR3 would be the better choice.
Have xf10 and yeah, autofocus is not so good like in ricoh, but still ok.
Attach the lens cap to the neck strap not the Camara. Put it behind your neck when shooting.
I love the Latino music. Thanks anyway for the video. I've yet to decide whether to buy the Ricoh or the Fuji. I love travelling and I prefer to carry a pocketable camera on the go and be able to shoot simultaneously.
Thanks, Matt. I think if I was going for something like that it would probably one of the X100s
Now when X100V is out I can get used X100F in a great shape for the half price of Ricoh ))
By my tastes, I find the Fuji images just look much better than the Ricoh.
I've never understood how people use these types of cameras on a sunny day at all
Where are you finding the XF for $400? I’m finding the XF10 for $600+.
Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I have the XF10 and really like it. Worth it for me
Great video. I’d be interested in GR II vs this Fuji. Why was ISO 6400 so bad? I can use 6400 on MFT with less noise.
Awesome VID!
Ive heard about the missed focusing on the Fuji elsewhere too, so that's right out for me
Wouldn’t the Sony A5100 Be comparable to the Ricoh?
And was just on rebate. Got mine new for 350$
I’m going for the Ricoh but the question is : GRII or GRIII cause you can find the II brand new 350€ cheaper. That’s a big difference. I’m not sure yet 😬
Thinking about the same. Which one did you end up deciding on?
I wish GR had 35mm lens but it will probably never come true. I personally prefer 35mm fov but can't stand the stupidly gigantic Fuji X100 series.
I actually own both the M6 II and the Ricoh GR III. The M6 II is arguably the much more capable camera all around. But it doesn't fit in your pants. Combine that with a razor sharp lens and IBIS, and you have a winner for everyday carry. Everything else is bested by the M6 II, if pocketability is not paramount.
a little diappointed that fuji did not refine the x70 but went with this xf10.
I agree! The X70 is still a fantastic camera though.
yasmin so beautiful really really beautiful
Hate the cameras, loved the music..!!
Excellent video quality, what camera are you using to record this. Exposure and everything on point
Has anyone gone from an X100v series to X10? I realise x100v is superior in every way, but am finding pocketability being an issue, i used to have the older ricoh with me way more often than i do the bulkier and heavier x100v now.
X10 being fairly old and inferior AF, Im also contemplating the grIIIx but again had issue with ricoh in the past, burnt board, dust etc
This is to take occasional shots, street, travel and evening shots mainly
Better compare GR ll and XF10 😄
If the GR III seems expensive at $899 compare to the Leica Q and it will seem a raging bargain. There isn't much the GR III can't do at a very high level.
My personal comparison of Fuji X70 and Ricoh GR III is way sharper and the Fuji is always a bit soft. I’d take the Ricoh all day long. And yes, Fuji lens hoods piss me off.
