    First, a short story of one of my first Disneyland memories…When I was about five (early 1970’s), I rode the Matterhorn with my dad. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the circumstances that led to this, but as we were ascending to the top in the sled, a Mickey balloon floated up past us. My dad reached out and grabbed it for me, and I was able to take it home to Arizona. That memory of Disneyland and my dad being a hero balloon snatcher will be forever sealed in my memory.
    The Matterhorn is definitely a top ten ride. Iconic and nostalgic as any ride in the park. The mountain and the track need serious refurbishment, and I am okay if that includes a bit smoother track and less jerks at start/stop, but the ride experience should be essentially the same when complete, just more rideable for those who currently knock the roughness of the ride.

    Matterhorn Mountain is the Icon, in many ways, of Disneyland. When people see it they know its this park. No other Disney park has a 4th mountain, so the Matterhorn needs to stay. But I agree with David, do whatever is necessary on the inside to improve it but keep it the same on the outside.

I remember when they enclosed the tracks inside and added Harold etc.... that was really something. The cars back then you could sit inside someone's legs. I have no problem with taking it down and improving, I think future generations will enjoy it so much. Leave it as iconic as possible using what are the good things and add in the new magic. Matterhorn: Disneyland opened when I was 3-1/2 years old. I've been riding the Matterhorn for 65 years. Now that I'm older, the right is almost unbearable. Being slammed down on a hard seat continuously throughout the ride keeps me from enjoying what I used to love as a child. The seats are hard and the ride is rough. I find that the whole time I'm sucking in my stomach and to try to keep my butt from hitting the seat and gritting my teeth from the pain as I'm being slammed up and down. I understand that, if you were going down an icy slope on a sled, it would be bumpy, but I think the ride excludes older people because of the physical severity. In fact. I think Disneyland could be liable for musculoskeletal injuries. I'm sad that I can't ride it very often due to the pain and chance of injury.

    When I went to Disneyland in the 60's the Matterhorn was the top E ticket ride. It was the first E ticket ride I would go to. If I had an extra E ticket it would be for the Matterhorn. So for me the nostalgia plays an important part. But being much older I don't ride it much because it is a little rough. But when I do the nostalgia makes it worth it for me.

    It's only a matter of time before they have to rebuild it. Assuming that the rumor is true, an inspection revealed water damage and concluded that the structure would last for at max 10 more years. That's at MAX. The concrete rock work is connected to the main steel beems with wood which will invariably rot and decay. Who knows how many more times chunks of the exterior will break off so it is in everyone's best interest for them to rebuild it.

    • @tidepoolclipper8657

      While I am in favor of trying to preserve the original spirit of many of the Disneyland attractions; especially old school ones like Matterhorn; they have a valid excuse to completely rebuild Matterhorn at this rate.
      May as well use this as an excuse to get Vekoma or RMC to help with the new track work and for Disney to design better ride vehicles that still otherwise look like bobsleds.

    • @Rick-lf2ol
      @Rick-lf2ol 4 роки тому +1

      The wood inside the mountain will NOT rot and decay. Most houses are framed up with wood. How many of them are older than the Matterhorn?

    • @cren151
      @cren151 4 роки тому +1

      @@Rick-lf2ol There are several waterfalls on the mountain. The rock work underneath them gets soaked everyday, especially if it's windy. The water seeps through the cracks in the concrete and into the structure. Prolonged contact with water will definitely degrade the wood.

    • @ninjagirl226
      @ninjagirl226 4 роки тому

      My question is this there’s older wooden coasters still in operation in the US. Take Blue Streak at Cedar Point (which I imagine gets pretty damaged from rain and snow) For example. Heck Shivering Timbers and Zach’s Zoomers at Michigan’s adventure although younger probably is buried in snow every year. Why would the Matterhorn be in worse shape?

    • @cren151
      @cren151 4 роки тому

      @@ninjagirl226 The wood on those old coasters is probably seasonally painted with a protective sealant or lacquer. If the wood cracks and splinters they can replace that individual piece and perform other small-scale maintenance. With the Matterhorn, they can't do that because the wood is sealed off (inside the outer shell) and the water can't evaporate as well as it would with an outdoor coaster.

    From what I understand, the Matterhorn is bumpy because the track was “eyeballed” by the builders. Nobody really knew how to bend tubular steel for a rollercoaster track and the curves were bent imperfectly.

    Ground-up rebuild! I love the matterhorn, I love the history, I love the innovation to make this ride idea happen, I love how they e learned from their unknowings and made other rides better...but this mountain is tired. It's not built in a way where it can be gutted and refilled with new ride technology. That's the sad truth of it and it really needs to be rebuilt. Don't make it something else, just make it better, safer, smoother, more visually exciting on in the inside. Phew. Hard choice you propose. Given your claims about the actual state of the support structure? If it really is deteriorating that badly, then my inner Imagineer says yes... Put up the walls, take it down to the foundations and do a 'bionic man' upgrade. Stronger, longer lasting... better technology inside while the outside returns to the same look and layout I have known all my life.

    Expedition Everest is a better version of Matterhorn, which needs a complete rebuild:
    - Make a smooth single track, with side-by-side seating and double the length of the ride (giving up the occasional race is worth it)
    - Add a couple of slow-downs like the Seven Dwarves Mine Train, with some Harold jump scares
    - Add some steep drops and better banks on turns

    I’m in a weird middle ground, where I last it at least a half dozen times during my trip last week and had a blast, but during the ride I had a lot more “oofs” than screams. The yeti is cool, the mountain is neat, and the ride is so fun and iconic but yeah, you can 100% feel every bump and turn and movement. It is pretty cool to be in the coaster when something at loading goes wrong and you get to slide over, though.

    When I was a kid, I knew I was close to the park when I could see the castle from the freeway; later, when I could see the Matterhorn from the freeway. It was an exciting and smooth ride. The Skyway ran through it. There was no Harold. There was no need of Harold. Time has passed. The Matterhorn has evolved, but it needs to remain as an iconic symbol of the park. Of course it needs to be taken down to the ground and rebuilt with modern technology. The ride is so rough I can no longer do it and I am not alone. So put the scrims up. Let the Imagineers work their magic. Rebuild the same edifice and restore the smooth ride. And David, I agree about the beauty of those rare moments when the two sides of the bobsled tracks almost converge. If there's an improvement to be made, they could time the rides so you get that sense of a race ala Radiator Springs. And by all means, please... no Frozen overlay... please.

      I was in DL the last night of the older cars (where you sit in pairs). I was so upset that we were losing that car. But I rode matterhorn all night so as to soak in the experience one last time. The newer cars definitely were not designed well, and they hurt my lower back when I first got a ride in them. They have since added some better padding in the bottom and it does help. This ride is so important to my memories. It was the first “scary/fast” ride I went on growing up. What made it so palatable was the ability to sit in front of my parents, kind of protected from the fright. There is something magical about this ride. I love the sights and sounds while waiting in the queue. I think they should level it and rebuild from zero. But I think they should return the old style cars and keep the track layout (it is almost a historic necessity to keep it that way).

    If the mountain is old and indeed falling apart, then it probably needs to be rebuilt and /or reimagined. If it doesn't need to be rebuilt, they just need to retrack the ride. All these old Arrow coasters are notorious for being being extremely rough. The second reason I believe is that the this ride was never designed for two cars. Just based on the way the track dips and turns. If you are in that second car, it is murder on your whole body.

    • @tidepoolclipper8657
      @tidepoolclipper8657 4 роки тому

      Apparently the tracks are built into the structure itself. With how the mountain itself doesn't have much life at this point (supposedly only 10 years left before Disney has no other choice), they may as well take the opportunity to make a new version that would make Walt himself proud.
      The only thing I am a tad bit worried about is that Disney would use it as an excuse to make the new version Frozen based. Not because Frozen is a bad movie or anything like that; but rather Disney needs to let some amount of their attractions stay movie-less.

    The Matterhorn overall is an amazing attraction with such a great history! That being said it is old extremely rough and outdated and needs to updated. Imagine the Matterhorn with its current layout but with the space mountain ride system! If it was as smooth as space mountain and you could enjoy the scenery around you without having to brace for every turn because you know its going to be comfortable. It would make this ride so much more enjoyable and perhaps more thrilling because would might be a little faster. This could be achieved by changing the ride system, nothing else has to be changed.. the Matterhorn is great the way it is aside from the uncomfortable ride.

      Plenty of people loved Matterhorn. However, that attraction is essentially approaching the end of its service life in 10 years if it turns out to be true. Even Walt would have understood this and would have allowed them to build upon the old mountain with an even better mountain.
      I want the new Matterhorn in the far future to be externally similar to the current incarnation (they can make as many internal changes as they need to; Matterhorn's internals were originally mostly open space in its early days.); except make the whole thing feel bigger and take advantage of modern engineering. While a new version would have no need for a pool of water to slow down the bobsleds; however, they should have a smaller pool of water somewhere near at the end to pay tribute to that moment.

The Matterhorn was the single most miserable ride experience of my life. I was white-knuckling the entire time worried that it was going to throw my back out. The entire ride was incredibly painful and gave me a massive headache. Worst ride I have EVER been on. I can’t believe this thing is still standing in this condition. It even looks dumpy. I agree pretty much with what you both said. No question it needs emergency surgery. I also want the facade, layout, theme and story to look the same, but the guts need major help. This ride should be for EVERYONE to enjoy like Walt intended, the roughness needs to come down. For anyone who doesn't agree that needs changed in itself, then you are saying you don't others to love it. Not all bodies are able, at any age, to handle the extreme turbulence. If you don't let them fix it anything, it may indeed get taken away from us forever.

    Even having The Matterhorn out of action for a short period of time would definitely hurt. Something I'm kinda surprised wasn't mentioned here is that, if you're only going to go on one ride at Disneyland at night, it should totally be The Matterhorn.
    I actually miss the old, four-to-a-seat, ride vehicles. I used to get in one of those things and ride it like an actual bobsled, throwing my weight into the turns and whatnot. I don't know if it was just placebo or what, but it certainly felt like it got notably faster that way. I think I *may* have triggered an emergency stop a couple times doing that...

    I think what would be cool is if they kept the shaping of the main mountain intact, just rebuild it to look close to if not near identical, BUT that they add some more rockwork or buildings or stuff for the sight lines between the lands around the base of it. Create a little more transistion from one land to another similar to how things change when you're going from Frontierland into Batuu. Not sure how well that work with the parade route side but I think having those transistion points between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland would be really cool.

    The tracks aren't bumpy. The roughness comes from the fact that they designed this without the riders' "heartlines" in mind. Most roller coasters are designed in a way so that the elements/transitions happen in a way so that your heart is the center of those elements. The tracks themselves are actually really smooth, it's just the transitions between turns and drops that are rough. The structure, although not designed perfectly, are not crumbling. They're safe, but old.
    The only way I can see them easing the roughness would be to redesign the trains (again) to feature individual seats in their own individual cars. A train could have 4 smaller cars towed together instead of 2 long cars like we have now. The seats would have to be even lower and closer to the tracks to try to get as close as they can to the heartline level.
