The Best Seiko Diver for $400 Is a Lorier Neptune?

- It features a Seiko movement but that is where the similarities end. This watch is no copy of a Seiko Monster or Sumo. It is something completely different and features vintage features along with a superior case and bracelet. Join me for a quick review.

Dude so stoked you are reviewing this! Best diver under $500 without a doubt in terms of design
I love the Seiko nh35 movement, I have it in a couple watches I own and it keeps incredible time compared with some of my swiss watches with ETA movements.
Yeah, my Seiko Samurai keeps better time and has a longer power reserve than my Rolex and Breitling. I'm starting to think that these people that make big deals over in-house vs ETA, Seiko movements vs Swiss, etc. are full of shit.
A plexiglass crystal is actually more shatter resistant than sapphire. That is why NASA specified they wanted a plexiglass crystal. A shattered sapphire crystal in a weightless environment would be a disaster, possibly ending with shards in someone’s eye. The deficit of plexiglass is how easily it scratches. Cool watch, but I would have to polish plexiglass every single day.
Thanks for the insight!
"A shattered sapphire crystal in a weightless environment would be a disaster" -- Well, I will have to make sure I limit my trips into outer space.
Yah I see the reasoning. As a tool watch a scratch is fine and a break is not if you're 100 meters underwater and bump your wrist on a....(insert fun underwater adventure item here...)
I knew somebody would points this out
Dude, do you wrestle bears for a living? Why would you have to polish a plexiglass crystal everyday? It's plexyglass not jello.
You say that you feel that a lot of love and care went into it. Based on the emails the Ortega’s send to their customers, I would say that you are right. I’m excited about mine, hate the wait.
Anthony, my brother, another great review. I agree with the build quality on the case and bracelet. With the large triangle markers at the 12-3-6-9 positions, the dial looks more balanced. So I’m glad there is no date. If I were to be nit picky, I would prefer a flat sapphire crystal. But then that would take away from the cool retro look of the watch. It really looks like a nice piece. Thanks for another great review. All the best-Mark
Seiko does need to step up their game. I have several Seiko’s. There finishing and design is great but lack many features that most micro-brands have for the same price.
Seiko doesn’t use sapphire., machined clasps, or ceramic bezels on any of there 4r15 watches. They use pin and collar braclets , which are a pain to size. They also have yet to do a fully lumed Bezel.
Theis watch reminds me of the Borealis Sea Storm V2 that was recently made available on pre-order. Has a very similar bracelet. It is 42mm wit a sapphire crystal, and is basically a homage of an 1950s Fifty Fantoms.
Also, the NH35 has a date feature, the NH38 is the no date version. They chose just not to have an cut-out on the dial.
Great review
I can’t decide between this and the Baltic Aquascaphe diver. Obsessed with this and losing my mind.
Bought this lovely watch (the Neptune Blue, Version 1) for my wife...and we BOTH wear it and love it. It hits all the right notes and truly is the best microbrand watch out there. So glad I was able to snag one of these beauties before they were discontinued. So don't like the design changes in the V2 model with its larger dial and almost non-existent rehaut that ruins the perfect vintage vibe of the original.
Much prefer the generous dome of the V2, and the more proportional/larger dial. Couldn't disagree more!
You hit it out of the park, JA. on this review. Seiko should take a design cue from this piece. As an owner and fan of the Speedo and circa 80's datejusts, these Plexiglass crystals have their charm.
I actually don't mind a seiko nh35 but at $400, there's also many that offer miyota 9015 which for me is in the same league as eta 2824 and 6r15. despite that, i really like the overall look of this watch and i'm waiting for the 2 gen order to open. i guess sometimes you can't just judge the watch by its movement. one more thing, i always prefer seiko's pin and collar than screwed in links, they are more secure and actually easy to adjust.
I own the Neptune Gilt, and absolutely love it! Keep up the good work. 👍
Sk8park- J that watch is the dream!!!
I dig the end link design choice, it makes for a true 38mm lug to lug. Some oyster style and integrated bracelet designs add extra millimeters that are not visible on paper case measurement stats. Great content as always, congrats!
Damn! I had succeeded in convincing myself that I didn't really want this watch, then, I had to come across this video!
Amazing watch I have the black & white one.👍🏻
Excellent review, thanks for this - very thorough and helpful - looking forward to receiving my Lorier in Feb - great points about the accessibility of a 39mm watch, completely agree!
Hi J A thumbs up from you and the quality of the bracelet and the overall look of the watch and then be told it’s cost ,I don’t care who’s name is on the dial I would certainly have one.what a beautiful piece for under £300 it’s one of them deals you can’t walk away from. Thank you for sharing my friend.Take care.👍🏻
"its cost", not "it's". If you don't know why, look it up. "Whose", not "who's". "One of THOSE deals", not "them" deals. But, who am I kidding? You weren't interested in grammar during any of your five years in the seventh grade; you're likely interested now.
Roger L fuck off,
Nice review on this Houston based micro brand. They opened up pre-ordering yesterday for the next wave.
Indeed. Under $400, this is the best you can get as a Vintage diver. But Acrylic is a big no-no to me. I would get Baltic Aquascaphe instead.
Looks like an Omega Seamaster 300 and Tudor Submariner had a child
Haha, yeah it does doesn't it.
Lorier's just gorgeous. I'd go black/gilt for the dressy look, since it's a bit of a dress diver. . . Yeah, I look at Lorier and say, "yes!" and I should sell my other divers and just lump-sum invest in this as the Diver to Rule them All. BUT, I put on my Helm Vanuatu and just cannot get away from its styling. Do I need another diver? No, not really.
I like almost everything about the watch except the hands.
"Getting a watch with this kind of presence is usually a multi thousand dollar proposition". Whoa, you sound like you're new to the game - which I well know you aren't! Nice video as always, competent watch (it's been on the radar for some time) and I agree with you regarding the bracelet but I think Seiko and a few other brands will somehow survive this one and live to tell.
Great review as per usual Anthony.
I really like this watch, and for pretty much all the same reasons that you do. Many thanks for posting this.
Plexi crystals exist for exactly the opposite reason you mention, they are FOR shatter resistance. What the downside of plexiglass is is that it will scratch easier. Sapphire doesn’t scratch (in fact anything does or doesn’t scratch due to hardness) because it’s so extremely hard. Sapphire is close to diamond in terms of hardness. But the cost of that hardness (and thus scratch resistance) is that it can more easily shatter - like glass. Plexi will bend or dent slightly before is shatters so there’s some give. But because it’s much software than sapphire, it will scratch more easily. But that can be buffed out using a product called Polywatch Polish if the scratches aren’t too deep.
Great upload! You need to experience the Armida A6........
Great looking watch. Can’t find it available anywhere though.
Interesting Hour hand. Usually don't see a smaller size hand like this on a diver
Good review, J. ANTHONY. The Lorier appears to be a strong contender in the sub $500 range. Personally, I am disappointed with Seiko. A number of micro brands offer sapphire crystal, excellent Japanese movements, and outstanding bracelets in the sub $500 range. I just purchased a Phoibos PY007 with those qualities for $299. Wake up Seiko!
+Savvy Life Strategies yeah, sadly I agree. Seiko is my favorite brand but I feel like they have been getting lazy lately and selling average watches when they could be doing much better
Oh I think SEIKO is WOKE to it already. Did you know that Gorilla Glass comes from the Hardlex glass technology?
I had a Phoibos Wavemaster and it was a disaster. Ever since I am allergic to microbrands and stick to JDM Seiko and I am saving up for a Grand Seiko, an Omega Speedmaster and a (tag) Heuer Monaco 11. I will sell off everything eventually except for my Sarb033, the Alpinist and my Seiko 5 809.
Marinus Antonius: Yes, good. I I just ordered some buckles and claps for SEIKO from SeiyaJapan.Com nice stuff. But please go on into the details of the Phoibos Wavemaster's failures?
@@tomasinacovell4293 The bracelet screws were made of cheese. Alignment problems. And no case finishing under where the bracelet was. Also sloppy lume applied. The UA-cam watch channels made it look like a steal. But it was a turd.
very nice watch. I have the black dial with gilt hands. It punches WAY above it's price point.
Beautiful Lorier Neptune watch with a good price.
If dial & bezel are aligned, yes. The best $400 Seiko.
I really want one of the Gilt versions of this, but they aren't selling them anymore :/
The bracelet you can get made for under $25. Why watch "guru's" think that making them from something as common as 316l stainless steel is something special always amazes me.
The only reason I mention that is that there are many watches in this price range that use plated cases or crap bare metal ones. I agree that 316l is nothing special. It's the basic standard.
Maybe because this particular bracelet is just about the best you’ll find in this price range. Name one that’s better Mr Expert.
How did this comment get even 2 likes? 🤔
WOW got to say that I did not think my Helm (another micro brand) could ever be beaten but this runs it very very close. It has the correct dimensions although I did not catch the thickness? But it's got style in spades the dial the bezel even the lack of crown guards and oversize just work SO well. Don't miss the date either or the lack of sapphire glass as the dome plexy works too.
Swore that was it for my diver collection but now...
Yeah, everytime I think I'm done I get pulled back in.
Good to know it's not just me 😬
Sapphire doesn't have shatter resistance quiet the opposite, I think you meant scratch resistance?
Yeah, thanks for the correction.
Great value on this one.
You should include Gincario in your videos!
Agreed! That is the plan...he has been traveling a lot. I would have him in every video if I could. Be sure to tell him he needs to join me in my videos as soon as possible!!!
@@JANTHONYCHANNEL we need to finally do this! ;-)
Looks nice....
39mm is a non starter for me, but it does look nice.
Any play in the rotating bezel?
They are All sold out! I like it! I subscribed to their email for when they come out again
Yeah, they are sold out for a reason...
Available on Amazon.
@@dzikijohnny uh, wrong dumbass. Lorier is a microbrand and not distributed on Amazon.
great review
Very nice watch. Seiko do need to be careful. Whilst they are clearly doing very good business selling movements I do think they are assuming their brand and name will keep them going without doing much work themselves. Excuse the pun, but only time will tell if they are right
Yeah, I agree. Seiko has the capability of producing watches at affordable prices with quality that no one can touch...they should be producing a consistently superior product in my mind.
Beefy piece. Great for the price. Thanx for sharing.
Steinhart has screw link bracelets at that price point. So does the microbrand Borealis. Probably all comes from a decent Chinese contractor (let's be realistic). I really like this watch BUT - I hope they release a model with a date window. I love the old time divers that have the date window at 4.30
Every micro brand check list:
Dive style watch: check.
Homage dive style watch: check.
NH35 movement: check.
$400-500 USD: check.
You should cut up the leather bag it came in and make a custom Lorier leather strap for the watch.
Cool watch review but the Sumo you’re wearing which I own as well is king 😀👍🏻
Why call it a Seiko diver, implying it's a homage of some sort, if the only thing in common with Seiko models is the movement? Plenty of microbrands use Seiko movements.
Had it an eta 2824, with the margin for, would it be a better proposition?
Yeah, I think the 2824 is a great movement.
The nh35 is a $40 movement the eta is a $150 movement - something to think about with "micro brand" prices.
We can pay near $1,000 for some special edition Seiko's with the 4R movement... I think that is really something to think about. That said, what something cost is never going to completely translate to it's selling price. Most things sell at a high mark up. LV, Prada, Rolex and others I'm sure have enormous margins...
Shhh they are supposed to be great value for idiots err I mean consumers.
No, Rolex watches are sold at cost. ;)
Cool watch
Does it have over wind measures?
Google Seiko NH35
Looks like a modded Vostok, especially the domed crystal.
What do you think of the Lorier Hydra? It looks pretty similar to the Neptune but with date
If the date is the only difference you can see, look more closely. Or buy clocks.
@@rogerl7533 Yeah thanks for that Roger! Obviously I can see other differences but the case and overall design is basically the same
$60 gets you an NH35 in an Invicta.
Yes, the NH35 is not a remakable movement, by any means. Not garbage, but pedestrian.
@@rogerl7533 And you'd rather have an Invicta than this Neptune? Aaaallllrighty, then......
I’d rather the $60 Invicta homage over the $400 homage from a couple guys in their mums garage anyday.
That's called a "pierced" lug. ROLEX really doesn't want you to change your bracelets, that too close to watchmaking for them. Also those are pressed or forged bracelet claps, they're not milled from bar stock, just like ROLEX "Stamp Forges" them.
That is stud. And you're right...no date is cool.
Damn you - now I have to buy one.
Instantly, no date is a deal breaker. Why they took a 4R36 movement and neglected to include a day/date function is a mystery to me. Also there's no knurling on the crown, I watched your fingers slipping as you were adjusting it... I dunno. It all doesn't make sense to me. For the same money you can get a good 6R15 watch.
also bracelet/ clasp... my OM is on a black Hadley Roma nato with orange seams now, looks great, the fact it was originally on a relatively cheap bracelet with a relatively cheap clasp just meant I wasn't too concerned about switching it out for something else and potentially spoiling the aesthetic. Getting hung up on a bracelet unless it is absolutely a major part of the aesthetic just doesn't seem to fly with me. Do you get quality at a discount because it comes with the watch? Can't the quality be matched by after market alternatives?
That’s like the rado captain cook
I actually really like this watch, not a massive fan of the price =/ great job on the review though, sold it well
...IF you can get one. At least you can easily buy a seiko.
You can also resell the Seiko easily. Try that with a Lorier or a Phoibos.
I could never wear a 39 mm,So guess some of us must be large .
great looking watch, hate that fuking crown
Better watch for the same money? Here you go - Steinhart Ocean - much better movement, sapphire crystal, bracelet every bit as good.
Subjective assessment there. Steinheart Ocean is a larger watch and a decidedly more modern/generic feel. The onlt onw that compares to what the Neptune is all about is their Vintage Ocean, but it;s 42mm and a whopping 16mm thick (!!).
Of course, as with any watch, there's a subjective component. However, a sapphire crystal is widely regarded as superior to plexi-glass. The Steinhart's ETA movement is widely regarded as superior. Last, a number of the steinhart divers are available in 39 mm case diameter.
As to which of the two watches is more attractive aesthetically, that is entirely subjective. Leaving aside that subjective component, the steinhart is, objectively, a superior watch.
When a watch with a NH35 costs $400 it’s impossible not to find a better watch for the money.
boring dial. Thanks for the review.
too bad they ruined this great watch with the v2.
NH35 for $400? No thank you.
