This 1968 Hemi came to Nick's after a dropped valve made a 'farewell tour' around the engine. Now, the 426 is rebuilt and ready for a first round of testing on the dyno. Here we GO!

Hi Nick! You were expressing concern about the low oil pressure at idle. In my experience, hot oil pressure of approximately 20-25 psi at idle may be a result of hi-performance anti pump-up hydraulic lifters. As soon as the accelerator is cracked open, the oil pressure goes to acceptable levels. The oil pressure variance can be valuable in a couple of ways! The high oil pressure part of this lifter only allows for the maximum lift without going to the point where the valve is getting pushed to far from the seat in case of a oil spike maybe caused by a stuck oil pump check valve. Another reason I like the anti pump-up hydraulic lifters is they help with the stopped idle performance that a high lift long, duration profile cam may negatively cause at low rpms. The high rpm value of performance cams still seem to keep their advertised value with these lifters as well. The lower rpm idle which can be of value when it comes vacuum operated items, lower stall torque convertors, brake drag, etc. The lower oil pressure in these lifters may have a slight ticking sound when idling, almost similar to a solid flat tappet cam. The other bonus is there usually a lot less valve adjustment periods that may be needed for most solid lift cams. High volume of oil flow at 20-25 psi, at idle should be more than adequate as long there isn't a problem oiling the top end of the engine such as the rocker arm assembly. In my opinion, oil flow volume to critical oiling points of the engine is more important than high oil pressure. Oil volume also takes less horse power to drive the oil pump at high rpm. One thing i have notice since Nick got the Thumper Carb ...it always seems to perform very well !!! Easy to work on and i love the sight glasses to check fuel level in the carb . Very nice carb . Hello to everyone!!!

A Monday afternoon, and the broken 426 Hemi is repaired and on the Dyno, and running a single 4bbl. I'm anxious to see what numbers this setup will make. I'm guessing around 500HP, and maybe a little more torque. Always happy to be here on Nick's Garage, the best channel on UA-cam!! Here We Go!!

What a Super Cool Build. From what this started out to be…dropped valve etc!, the cross ram should be lots of fun. Can’t hardly wait. Great job guys!!!
O.E. rated @ 425 hp. NHRA refactored them @ 475hp for stock class fairness. (Other engines were also similarly up - refactored. EX: Buick 455s's)
Hey Nick, growing up in Nova Scotia, I saw 318, 360, 383,440cid engines, but the 426 was special, and you get to work on these classic mopar engines! Great video Nick! you are a mopar guru!!👍✌
That is typical to comp retrofit hydraulic rollers. I will not put them in to any BB (or Hemi) engine. Sooner or later you will have problems. Have disassembled them and there is a steel plate with small holes in side that tends to split. I have converted several to mechanics retaining the hyd cam, just using very small lash like .004-.006".Works good.

Customer get at least 3 videos on his engine I bet he’s happy …. I’ve watched many of nicks dyno videos and never knew he had a back window in the dyno cell until I saw sunlight on the break in smoke from the paint lol

Yeah Nick that’s a failed lifter I’ve had a lot of problems depending on what brand you get for hydraulic roller lifters, Johnson seems to make the best that you don’t have any real issues with, I’ve had issues with morel, comp, lunati, when they bleed down that fast that’s a defective lifter

The mighty hemi! One of the few engines that had enough air flow to get it in trouble. 425@5000, 500@6000, 575@7000. How big are your kahoona’s? I’ve heard stories of 9000+ rpm passes over and over again. I knew the late great Bob Reed, he lived 20 mins from me, I visited his shop several times, he dumped the clutch north of 5800. Bullet Bob had the kahoona’s the let the mighty hemi scream! Look him up!

I was thinking if Chevrolet with the L88, LS6, ZL1 these are pure factory race engines all used a single carb & seemed to run okay.
Maybe a single carb Hemi isn't a bad thing.

Regarding the oil pressure since you put me on Lucas Oil there is nothing better.
Put Lucas Oil in my Hemi & no lifter noise period.
Love Lucas Oil it is the best hands down.

Just in the process of having my twin 354 Hemi’s redone for my 1957 33 foot Chris Craft Futura boat
I feel the engines are Iconic and want to keep them original to the boat
They each have twin four barrel carburetors also one of the engines is reverse rotation
I am from Western Canada, any advice on my build would be greatly appreciated

Nick you have that engine dialed in ! i am impressed at how smooth it revs up. i thought that first carburetor worked but i am not a perfectionist .the low oil psi is a major concern !

Low oil pressure actions:
1. Change the oil and filter again. You may have knocked a bunch of debris loose and into the filter.
2. If oil pressire still remains low, especially at idle, then change the oil pump.
I had to do these steps when I rebuilt a Ford 429 I found in a junk yard.
20 years later that engine is now in a boat, providing lots of power.

Seems to be a very common thing anymore with hydraulic roller lifters not holding oil. Seems to be almost as common as new flat tappets wiping themselves out

I was 11 when this Hemi first hit the streets. HERE WE GO!
5,800 RPM with the stock rods is childs play, I ran 7,200 in first gear over and over for years.
The factory Stock are plenty Strong but will Oval out the Big End a few Thousandths @ 7500....

It never ever gets old watching you on the dyno Nick. I just wish you could run up my engines. I have a 331 in my mustang which I have no idea what it makes. The Cleveland I have been working on will be ready to run soon too. No idea what it is going to make either.

It amazes me after all these decades of building the same basic design that even on this performance oriented Thumper Holley still hasnt come up with a way to change jets from outside the metering block instead of having to take the whole carb apart. I had an early seventies Opel Manta Rallye on which I had to replace the junk Solex two barrel carb with a MUCH nicer more modern Weber aftermarket rig that had jets you just unscrewed from the outside and screwed new ones in took five minutes, no need to drain fuel play with gaskets, bolts, fittings etc its was one of the easiest to tune carbs ive ever seen and it even came with two extra jets as options. Holley already has externally adjustable floats and being able to swap jets externally would be the perfect companion tuning feature.
On this Thumper Carb you can adjust fuel ratio from the Air Bleeds. Which are just above the Air Horn. I went with Jets for what is common ..
This is the engine that should have been available in the Imperial. No roller cam, no headers with max torque at about 3500 RPM.

I recently built a Hemi. Stock Hemi oil pump as I assume you are using. I have the same hot idle oil pressure as yours. I am happy with that. If you want more,I assume the Mopar long rotor pump, Melling M-63HV, would do it. I’ll go ahead and take a guess on the crossram and say +20. Love your dyno videos. Happy Holidays to all.

I love when nick puts on a hemi I run the video on the big stereo to feel the cam and the power. Lord I love it with a passion. It’s like you’re there. That cross ram will get 525 to 550 easy.
Yeah but in the 6500 Rpm range.....It's Stock 3.75" Stroke needs Revs to make Big HP !!!
Looks like it's already at 530 HP @ 5800 Rpm on 1 carb ! .....Customer asked for Only 450--500 HP......Who knows what the 2x4 Cross-Ram will crank !!
Well, that was more fun than a barrel of monkeys! 😊 Nice setup and tuning. With the Cross Ram setup you should be able to get 550 HP or close to it. That's more than just a cruiser, that's a crusher.
I think with some more RPM’s that single 4 can get there, this motors wants to rev more I would say it’s good for 6500 as it’s pulling easy and each time he backs off at 5500 or 5800 it sounds like it’s just getting going.

Watching the dyno videos takes me back to early child hood when I had to climb onto the fender of a car being worked on and driving my brothers nuts asking "What can I take off or what is this or that" and my mother would not let them run me off LOL and as a result I learned a lot at an early age.

Last video you said the dyno cell is reinforced concrete, bullet proof glass, and filtered air in. But the side door is always open where the engines get wheeled in. Why is it so?

That door usually stays open for more ventilation. But it’s not a safe place to stand. Also, the door to the control room is not reinforced, so the best place to be is behind the glass.. or watching on UA-cam. 😉

Every time I watch you change jets to make it run a little richer, I'm thinking to myself; why not just try installing the air cleaner? If air cleaner makes it run a little richer, then that's how it will be when it's installed in vehicle anyway... Although, I like the open throttle view down the carburetor as well, that is pretty cool.
Im thinking of a 426 Hemi in a 69 Chrysler 300 convertible but with a single Carter AFB and yea, its simple, a good 550hp and 595 ft lbs of torque. Hydraulic roller cam is good and roller rocker arms. The car will be a late summer and fall highway cruiser, will bracket race her in the beginning, just to see what she will run in the quarter mile. Should be a good mid 12s. Especially with all that weight and running 3.73 gears.

As soon as the Thumper Carb was put on as soon as it fired I thought the engine just woke up.
Only was able to view this today (Tuesday) but it was worth waiting for.
I'll say it now. It's hard to beat a good intake/single carb setup. (Providing its correct intake and carb for application)
Best way to get through winter is, don't count it by months or weeks...count it by paydays, nothing goes by quicker than a Payday
My dad used to say to get a 6 month loan and winter will fly by.
You can’t use a heavy oil with a hyd roller lifter . No 20w50.
You need an oil with a centistoke of 15 or less at 100 degrees celcius.
Valvoline VR1 conventional 10w30 is good, Driven HR5 10w40, Castrol GTX 10w40 conventional.
In the intro to your video, with the Thumper carb, the secondary blades were a long way from being wide open and 90 degrees to the throttle bore. Either throttle wasn’t opening all the way or someone messed with the secondary link rod.

lunati retro roller x303 cam .542 lift 286 duration 302 ford small block. i have stock 351 heads needing higher spring pressure. floats at 5400 rpm. but didnt affect lifters probably needed air out of the system.
You didn't mention the CFM of the current 4 barrel carbs, the first, then the "Thumper carb" you installed. It will be interesting to see what the two cross-ram carbs set up will provide for fuel / CFM Air. Good stuff, Thanks Nick.
