9:41, about this point, Sloclap's previous game Absolver had a lot of different martial arts styles the player could unlock while playing and mix and match moves making it a fun MMA type game (minus the grappling), but renamed to fit with the game's story. Them being Kick Boxing (renamed to Forsaken), Muay Thai (renamed to Khalt), Ba Gua Zhang (renamed to Windfall), Drunken Boxing (renamed to Stagger), and Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do (renamed to Faejin). When I saw Sifu's announcement, I really wanted the game to have a similar type of depth and mechanic, either with the different bosses/entire zone's enemies specialising in a different martial art styles that the player can pick up/unlock while fighting them. Too bad Absolver died due to the lack of content and updates. (more info on what I'm talking about here: ua-cam.com/video/fmqfIbR7Q4Y/v-deo.html )
@@SuperKratosgamer The other problem with Absolver was they were super slow at responding, partially because they were spending a lot of time on the content as opposed to balancing. By the time the PvE stuff came out people had dropped the game because of the fast move spamming and stuff.
There was also the consistent overcorrection with their balance updates that totally shifted the meta each time, making pvp investment harder than it already was. That being said, I still fucking love the game and I partially hold onto the hope of them coming back to it with enough proceeds from Sifu like they'd said iirc
@@Zevox144 they said early in Sifu development that they "would love to" go back to Absolver if Sifu is successful enough that they can afford to do so, but made no promises and more recent dev comments make it sound unlikely that they will. Which is unfortunate, but also understandable. Absolver was left in a bad state and really deserved better. Part of the problem is, like you said, very swingy balance "fixes" (many of which broke more than they fixed, and a few of which got rolled back because they didn't work as intended). But more important than that was the devs being utterly tone-deaf with a lot of feedback. They got clear "please make this change because of this reason" explanations from players who understood the game better than they did, and they listened, but then somehow missed the point so hard it hurt. This wasn't just a problem late in the game's life, it happened right from the start. Best example is actually how they handled feedback from the game's beta testing. The single most common piece of feedback was "let us remap the style ability inputs" followed immediately by "let us remap the movement keys to be AZERTY-friendly or to use ESDF instead of WASD" with other requests for control remapping as a general thing being a distant third place, but still more prevalent as feedback than any of the balance concerns. The response was, of course, to assure players that control remapping would be available in the game on launch. And on launch, you could remap the controls... *EXCEPT* for several specific inputs which were mapped to keys that prevented you from making AZERTY-friendly layouts or using ESDF, and the style ability inputs that were the single most critical piece of feedback people gave the devs as being neecessary to remap. Similarly, when coming into Downfall, the game balance was in a really good place before it came out. There was recurring feedback about the frame data not being accurate, and asking the devs to change the numbers to actually line up with how the game works - specifically saying the balance was good as it was, but the numbers being displayed were confusing people because there were moves for which they were inaccurate (but those moves were balanced in how they behaved). Their response was instead to change the timing of the attacks to more closely match the numbers, completely ruining game balance, and the subsequent updates were never able to clean that mess up fully. Adding onto this, the way they calculated frame data didn't line up with how they actually handled attacks in the game, so even after "fixing" it, some moves have inaccurate frame data.
After 2:09 minutes of ranting why it's pronounced "Shifu" he calls it "Sifu" then stating that it lacks consistency. Obviously very meta by Ranton here.
Holy your videos are god damn entertaining. I mean I'm pretty sure this took hours and hours of editing but the chaotic vibes are really what does it for me. SUBBED!
The critique you had for this game was spot on. There's nothing to do once you're done, except play it again, and I got that feeling for a while. There was no other way to approach the systems etc. But very early on I got this urge to perfect levels. Like, initially I was unhappy with beating the first level at about 30 years old. I felt it was making later stages far more difficult, so I decided to try and beat the Squats at 20. Since the game released, I've beaten every level without dying, just because it was so much damn fun to replay over and over and to get better every single run. One of my favourite games of all time, easily. DLC should be added, and personally I hope it's a spin on the mechanics, like playing as Yang without the talismans.
Phenomenal video! From the very start of it, the insane amount of editing, the intensity of the beginning, that all serves to grab the viewer and have them wondering - what's coming next? - only to then transition into a hyper-autistic presentation provided by Ranton, which ends up being filled with some incredibly good and well substantiated points. Even those that you struggled to articulate made complete sense to me. That's a review, and, I've got to say that if more reviews were done like this, well... We'd be having a far better time. Bravo!
I love it how they manage to nail visual diversity while still maintaining the silhouettes, always perfectly telegraphing which enemy archetype is which.
1. Nice Korra reference, 2. This game was made by the same dev who made the game Absolver, which is a martial arts fighting game where you build out your moveset by stringing different moves together that start and end in different stances. It was good, but not enough people played it and there wasn't enough content so it is dead. Nevertheless I think you'd have a rly fun time looking at some older vids of people playing the game and showing off their move decks.
On the bit about martial arts diversity, I'm not sure how or if it'd be possible, but it'd be awesome to see even more different styles not just kung fu. Man, your french is on point. It is as if you come straight from saint denis. The funny thing is i'm SURE you learn it from rap but DAMN even the accent is good. Tu gère grave frero.
Commenting on the mention of how "everyone fights the same but of course, indie studio has limitations": Sloclap's last game Absolver had TONS of moves inspired by multiple different martial art forms, more than Wing Chun - namely "drunken master" shit, more northern Kung Fu shit, even some Katate and a style specifically made to emulate Bruce Lee's. There's a MASSIVE amount of potential for them to add fresh new types of fighting in future content.
First of all @Ranton you're amazing. I'm not big on watching reviewers by random youtubers, which you technically are, but not only that, you're also a polyglot. Your German was amazing, not to mention your great grasp on English as well as your own Chinese dialects. You have this energy, this explosiveness about you that gets people like me, who enjoy a calm and nice day, up to your speed. You pump them up so to speak. Anyways, my point being at the end of all this, you've got yourself a subscriber, just because you're unique. Now, tell me who is editing your videos for you, because I hope not this huge workload falls into the hands of you or your wife. :D Have a great day!
I guess they use Simplified Chinese while speaking in Cantonese is supposedly to make it more relatable to overseas Chinese, I am a Chinese that was born and raised in South East Asia, of course we speak Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese but we usually follow the Simplified Characters, which could be the same for ABCs as well since the world seems to take place in a very Western enviroment.
ranton, i want you to know that your videos are very entertaining and beautifully crafted. it goes to show how much effort you've put into them and we truly appreciate your work.
Replayability comes through on how much more there is to learn about tech - Stunning and punishing enemies, animation cancels, etc. Though I think a better difficulty system and boss rush would be great.
It honestly fun seeing how passionately you speak of the game and it's qualities, yet how negligent you are of the primary moral the story carries (Wude, obviously), which kinda explains why no one authentically utilizes Pak Mei. It's performative. It's stylish. "It lets you show your opponent you can break him." This story goes from one of revenge to one of martial morality (the literal mandarin → English definition of Wude). To use moves that have appearance but mean nothing instead of a kill move because, you aren't fighting to kill in this game. You earn a bad ending to realize why one has Wude and when to quit (hence, sparing becomes your objective). You neutral ending to see Yang's motive, and you true ending to... well, I'm not sure. I'm still working towards the true ending. All I know is you true ending to show no need for the medallions (wait, three endings? Get on this, homedawg. Yang won't 0 deaths himself) Northern style, southern style, Wing Chun, none of it means anything when you don't know when to stop fighting.
The irrational pride of being one of the first 1k to watch a video, despite it being entirely a product of luck. Game looks awesome, and you did a damn fine job with this review my good man
Did I just transcend into a Universe where Filthy Frank is Chinese and a shaolin monk? The humor on this channel is hilarious, it reminds me of Papa Franku. Love it, subscribed!
As far as the consistency issues with the authenticity: Absolver didn't sell great and didn't make a lot of money. So I am GUESSING that they didn't have as much money to bring in people to make sure the game was stylistically consistent and authentic as they needed. Instead they focused their budget on making sure the animations looked correct, since that's the biggest part of the game.
3:36 Can we please take a moment appreciate the cultural awareness of the fact that French people "ehhhh" a lot and Rantoni Baguettoni knows this shit and puts in the French flag in the subtitles instead of "ehhh"
If they continue with this IP I would love to see them add more freedom of movement and interactivity as far as movement and fighting goes The ability to run off walls and kick people or even vault of the people etc felt like the final piece to the martial arts "movie" puzzle I understand for the sake of balance that may be difficult to implement without just killing the fun of it tho
Back in the 1970s when the TV series Kung Fu was a thing, there was an episode where two Chinese characters were speaking to one another. Chinese was not a thing known by most American audiences, so it seemed O.K.. That is, until Chinese-speakers called the Kung Fu series makers out for this scene. One character was speaking Cantonese, the other in Mandarin. In real life, they argued, they would not understand each other and yet these two were carrying on as if they were? Not all people who watch TV (especially a wisdom-loving show like Kung Fu) are couch potatoes who know nothing more than what they see on TV. Ranton's point with "sifu" vs. "shifu" is spot on. =)
@@MatthewTraceur Their story, not mine as I speak neither. Also this took place over 40 years ago (different generation than now). TV was different too. No internet. Perhaps they might understand each other now. Back then? I cannot say.
I remember really early on in my aikido instruction, like the 2nd day or 2nd week maybe, my teach just suddenly stopped all forms and stared us with a simple randori. It became really apparent that he wasn't going to be teaching us a bunch of forms but that the forms were simply steps to get familiar with principals. Later on, more complex techniques were employed to get you to start making mistakes and responding to mistakes in the technique is another form of training that helps you increase your reliance on principal and decrease your dependence on preplanned technique. I quit around then, because life hand caught up with me but I realized by then that the teachers were training off of the students. That they were so practiced that they needed our chaotic lack of technique to train against and to help them more deeply refine their fundamentals. I remember hearing that the founder of aikido used to assign homework to his students that amounted to them randomly surprising him on the street and at his home with attacks. This was because he needed the surprise attacks to be able to further train his ability. Supposedly they were supposed to try to kill him but I don't think that was likely, even if it was somehow legal. When I speak of principal there were only a few. 1st was, do not get hit. The 2nd was, do not get hit. The main method of avoiding being hit was to keep off of the centerline of attacks and to be mindful of effective range. You also can't do anything without direct contact. So, after practicing avoiding strikes and learning how to engage you then have to lean when to engage vs disengage. For that, we often applied a simple strategy that was encapsulated in a quote by the founder, “When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way.” A similar quote I have also heard in some taichi circles, "A small motion is better than a large motion and no motion is best of all." Outside of these principals, nearly everything else is just context and embellishment.
Nice observations. I'm sure Aikido is a great movement exploration "hobby" and can be effective for a relatively small group of people in the long run. However, you NEVER see it used in real challenging combat and dominate (e.g. a skinny guy against a big bad and experienced criminal brawler). The same goes for many other styles. It seems to me that strikes are the main tools of real hand to hand combat. What Aikido does seems to me like master level moves a great warrior learns after many years of practice and uses as embellishments on top of the main bread and butter strikes. To extract such "embellishments" and build a whole martial art around them certainly seems like an interesting approach 😅
I was able to grasp the aging stuff pretty early because I replayed the first level a few times to get my age down and farm upgrades before starting my run Basically whatever you purchase during your most successful run will carry over for that run (unless perma unlocked of course) But I'm also not good enough (or rather lack the mental fortitude 🤣) to beat the game so take it with a grain of salt

For this to ACTUALLY be rated and not be just a 7/10 is a testament that I probably need to buy this game. Also southern chinese martial arts and their derivatives REPRESENT.
Every vid is a masterpiece
Anybody knows the name of the song here at 1:01 ?
So many things happened in 12 minutes. I love it.
Dude I have watched 45 seconds of the video so far, had a seizure from the overwhelming editing and let me tell you one thing - I enjoys it so mucho!
Great job as always - love you :)
Man, your french is on point. It is as if you come straight from saint denis. The funny thing is i'm SURE you learn it from rap but DAMN even the accent is good.
Tu gère grave frero.

Can anybody tell me the name of the song in min 1:01? Been looking for it, but just cant find it.
Once again Ranton delivers another banger of a video!
To hell with karate and Bruce Lee.
I’m convinced this man doesn’t exist.
He is an entity of another world.
Another masterpiece of a review once again . They never fail to make me laugh 🤣 and also fun to learn more Shaolin tidbits
3:12 is that splits sound effect the “I fell off the podium while smooshing grapes with my toes” lady?!? You absolute mad lad. 😂
Imagine visiting the Shaolin when he was still present and hasn't left, it'll probably give you a whole new idea of the Shaolin 😂
I guess they use Simplified Chinese while speaking in Cantonese is supposedly to make it more relatable to overseas Chinese, I am a Chinese that was born and raised in South East Asia, of course we speak Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese but we usually follow the Simplified Characters, which could be the same for ABCs as well since the world seems to take place in a very Western enviroment.
ranton speaking french like a real gangsta rappeur is something i didn't knew i needed xD
Qui pouvait l'imaginer
I missed the insane editing style. Couldn't stop laughing as soon as the video started
Ranton ballert als englischer über 1 mio sub UA-camr casually 18 Karat lines in seine Videos LMAO, ich liebe diesen Mann einfach!
ranton, i want you to know that your videos are very entertaining and beautifully crafted. it goes to show how much effort you've put into them and we truly appreciate your work.
Can we just please take a second to appreciate how long it probably takes for him to make these videos? lol. Einfach ausgezeichnet🔨
if they ever do a sequel to sifu they should call you
Hey ranton what was that song at 1:02
Near the end you literally explained absolver, Sloclap's previous game where there are multiple styles
@ashy true
this is the first video of seen from you. bro i was way to high for that lol good stuff
It's always a good day when Rantoni uploads!
Yang won't 0 deaths himself)
Northern style, southern style, Wing Chun, none of it means anything when you don't know when to stop fighting.
THANK YOU SO MICH FOR BEING THIS ILLEGALY FUNNY AGAIN I MISSED IT SO MUCH
As far as the consistency issues with the authenticity: Absolver didn't sell great and didn't make a lot of money.
So I am GUESSING that they didn't have as much money to bring in people to make sure the game was stylistically consistent and authentic as they needed. Instead they focused their budget on making sure the animations looked correct, since that's the biggest part of the game.
ranton, never ever abandon this channel again! your content is a wonder
what he speaking french at the beginning lmaoo??
And also at the End ?? like a full sentence??
It's like he just remembered his channel and used every single editing technique he remembers
Not really he is always amazing
I love the Ip Man reference 😂
Bro what the fuck did my brain experience in just 30 seconds.
is it just me or is it just so entertaining to watch his Sifu review over and over when I'm bored
3:36 Can we please take a moment appreciate the cultural awareness of the fact that French people "ehhhh" a lot and Rantoni Baguettoni knows this shit and puts in the French flag in the subtitles instead of "ehhh"
I have always appreciated your videos, but this was a new high, hilarious man.
3:03 😂
00:46 song name please?
ua-cam.com/video/FurmH7dJkjE/v-deo.html
Did you find it ?
1:50 that genuinely surprised, the spelling is perfect too 💀
If they continue with this IP I would love to see them add more freedom of movement and interactivity as far as movement and fighting goes
The ability to run off walls and kick people or even vault of the people etc felt like the final piece to the martial arts "movie" puzzle
I understand for the sake of balance that may be difficult to implement without just killing the fun of it tho
Many Canto speakers would know mandarin? and most mando speakers would know canto if they live in the south, perhaps even more dialects
For that, we often applied a simple strategy that was encapsulated in a quote by the founder, “When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way.”
A similar quote I have also heard in some taichi circles, "A small motion is better than a large motion and no motion is best of all."
Outside of these principals, nearly everything else is just context and embellishment.
He's back! When the world needed him the most he retured! 😭
therapist: ranton giving a game a score of more than 7/10 does not exis-
ranton:
The newest update now has an option for a Cantonese dub
1:01 can I get the sauce for this song, that shit slaps
ua-cam.com/video/WkMd7iNaMBU/v-deo.html
I was able to grasp the aging stuff pretty early because I replayed the first level a few times to get my age down and farm upgrades before starting my run
Basically whatever you purchase during your most successful run will carry over for that run (unless perma unlocked of course)
But I'm also not good enough (or rather lack the mental fortitude 🤣) to beat the game so take it with a grain of salt
