@@stopthinkact7204 my talk isn't cheap. I'm talking from experience. I own an 8 speed c7 zo6 with a few tweaks, it's fast. Really fast and so is the 8 speed paddle shift tranny. With these high horsepower cars, you can lose a drag race by a lot in the shifting alone. With the 8 speed auto/paddle shift, there is no delay in acceleration during shifts... None. And since the shifting is lightning fast and with the better gear ratios of the 8 speed, it's just faster than the manual in a drag race. The numbers don't lie. Look at the quarter mile and zero to 60 times compared between the manual and the 8 speed auto. Besides, the c7 zo6 can be easily tuned to upwards of 850 hp or more for a reasonable investment. It's no joke. Besides, after a couple more runs, I bet that Mercedes would have started breaking down.

The corvette has 660hp while the amg gtr has 580, the c7 Z can run sub 11 seconds on the quarter mile while the amg gtr can't do better than 11 flat. The dual clutch transmission is way faster than the a8 on the vette. It's engineered better but costs more. I'd say for it's price the vette wins, for the amg gtr money you'll get a c7 zr1 which undoubtedly beats it
auto may shift faster than manual but with a hero driver manual car losing less drive train power to the ground manual from a roll is faster , and thats from verified vbox runs on the net
Having owned both there is no comparison for me. The Z06 was the car I dreamed of owning I was obsessed with Vettes since the day my older cousin took me out in his split window. However, I bought mine, paid the mark up price gladly. Within 10K miles I was so disappointed in the build quality, the interior, panel gaps, the creaks and groans it made while still virtually brand new. I sold it- quickly- As they say never meet your heroes. I got the 2020 AMG GTR and it was the best upgrade ever. Cost more but the price doesn't reflect how much better that car is build quality wise. Technically the AMG GTR is a mid engined car as the motor sits well behind the front axle in the middle of the car. I have stage 3 in the AMG it is a beast. I'd have preferred to see the difference on a race course.
All you need is the real thing again 2019 Z06 1LZ automatic the lightest of the Z06 family. You don't use the ZR1 it is a track version model only. Also the Camaro ZL1 1LE and Dodge Viper ACR are too over weight and not able to drag race or go at a rolling start. Too much weight and tall wings and spoilers. I know because I owned some. 3900 pound to 4200 pounds. The Camaro ran a 11.4 the Dodge Viper ACR ran 11.4 the ZR1 the best was 10.9. Not enough.

@@raulsanchezjr4048 You sold your zo6 because you prefer a Mercedes. That’s not an issue. It’s more luxurious and has lots of features that make it a more comfortable ride. The truth is brother, that amg doesn’t have the full potential that the lt4 engine has as far as power BUT I definitely understand why someone would choose it over a c7 zo6.
Yes the manual is more fun and engaging, but if you want better numbers with the C7 (all models) you’d better just go with the 8AT. Oh and 100 octane fuel in the supercharged ones. If I run only California 91 with a bottle of Boostane in the tank, it feels like it holds something back on a long pull. If I run a full tank of 100, it’s all there.
And exactly my point too. In reality, the c7 zo6 is lighter, more hp AND torque, lower 0-60 times and simply faster than the Mercedes. The race was lost due to the Vette being a manual transmission. The auto 8-speed is much faster in a drag race. Especially one that is tuned.
It's hard to deny the results. AMG GT-R is definitely the quicker car, but for 3x the price, it better be. Numbers don't lie either, most Z06's are mid 11 second cars all day. Hard to get into the 10s unless the conditions are just right.
Really only just a small percentage is going to race/track there cars so understandneed for an auto. That's why I only buy stick cars for the enjoyment of the drive and control of the car.

I have a 2016 Z06 Convertible Automatic. She's beautiful, Triple Black. Has all the options, 3lz package. However, she sits in the garage. I know nothing about it. Hell, don't even know how to set the radio stations. I'm a older guy, 68, and I take her out of the garage every once in a while and ease down to the marina on pretty days to check on my boat. That's it. It sure is fun to watch these videos and see this fellow drive the heck out of the car and show me what this rocket is capable of. This guy can drive. He knows the machine. I can't. The most excitement I had in this car is when I dribbled ice cream on my seat. I know you might say, "What a waste of machinery" and you're probably right but after working most of my life, starting my business, raising kids, the Viet Nam thing, it's nice easing down the road in one of the meanest, baddest, cars ever to come from Chevrolet. Just watching your videos is a turn on for me. Thank you.
Yes! you better believe it. I have the same experience. 2016 Z06 3LZ with Z07 track package. 126K. After three years I got a 2019 Z06 1LZ 86K. The 1LZ is just under 300 lbs. lighter. I will say major difference in the straight line performance. I race other Z06 vehicles and guest what? Their in the rear view mirror. Especially if their manual transmission.
I was the driver of the Z06. My drag racing times in prior generation Z06's can be viewed on the Corvette forum's fast lists for C5Z06 (#4 in Bolt ons) & C6 Z06's (#5 in bone stock and #2 in bone stock w/Drag radials) so the shifting was not the problem. I came back to this video to share that back then I had just gotten the car and was still quite unfamiliar with it. I had no idea how to use the PTM nor did I use it in this video. I also did not know that the supercharger expansion tank was not bled properly by a long shot and that caused/causes the car to heat up FAST and pull timing, robbing it of a lot of power. It would be cool to re-run these races now but the owner of the AMG GTR sold the car over a year ago.
Ahh that garage... Seeing that Exige makes me miss my 350whp BOE400 Elise that someone hit and totaled not too long ago. It brought so much joy to the neighborhood kids that I let sit in the car and take pictures. It also brought joy to their parents who also wanted to sit in the car and get pictures. I loved the stories that were shared by former Lotus Elan and Esprit owners. Just being able to drive the car and put smiles on everyone's faces who saw and heard the car was amazing. Now to get back on on topic, this was a great comparison. My wife and I have been looking at a base AMG GT as a good way to get into an entry level GT car that is somewhat exotic. It will definitely be more forgiving and safer than the Elise, but it won't provide the same thrills. The Evora 410/GT seems like the logical step if I want to go back to having one car that can still be used as a daily but also be a bonkers street car when I want it to be. I've also looked at base C7s with the Z51 packages to be a partial Elise replacement or even a Camaro SS 1LE (track package). These picks would be much more forgiving than my boosted Elise was and allow me to become a better driver in a safer manner at track days and local autocrosses due to the modern electronics that can help reel me in if I make a mistake. Also, I won't be worried every time I go out that even the smallest road debris can potentially total the vehicle... I'm looking at you Lotus and your prices for front and rear clamshells.
@diz_ - Dang, that sucks man. Must’ve been a helluva car. I’m keeping my Exige stock for this track season but next year, I’m planning to go FBO with BOE and some other components. I honestly love the Exige, hands down my favorite car so far next to the gated Gallardo I had many years ago. To address the statement, I think the AMG GT is the right way to go. It is a very pretty car and I find it more “exotic” than anything else in it’s price range. Except maybe the i8 because it’s midengined and the doors go up but that’s subjective. C7 Z51s are great cars and they have great on and off track potential, but if we’re in that segment, you might as well just go for a C7 Grand Sport. The widebody and added aero makes a big difference.
Sheesh! That Merc really cooks. I love your garage bro. Glad to see you are still making awesome videos. I think the Z06 would have done better with the auto BUT I would still buy the MT.
If you watch closely in the roll race, no ground was being made up by the GT-R on the shifts, so auto or manual made no difference. The GT-R was just reeling the Z in and would have driven around had the runway been longer,
@Enigma Tombo Man, it’s been a minute. Good to hear from you and hope things are doing well. You speak the truth, I really think my auto Z would’ve put up a better fight overall, but it wouldn’t be nearly as fun to drive as a sports car.
@@rleader1 Some of that has to do with that aero drag on Z06. This was a C7 Z06 with stage 2 aero package. Its been documented its a pretty solid difference when you have a stage 1 aero Z06. Terry Mitchell Terry talk is cheap...f1 and performance vehicles are manual...but their transmission are always at their best times...manual drivers make faster times then automatics...beside there are paddle shifters for the manuals...no excuses for vette...
Terry Mitchell if this statement you just pointed out is true then why do they make sports cars with manual transmissions...but I hear you maybe it played a role but not a big one if you consider that German engineering is better...
Auto 2019 ZR1 vs AMG GTR would be much more fair comparison. At least that way you would be comparing a $140K car to a $185K car. AMG GTR are dynoing at 630hp overall it would a much more evenly matched race IMHO.
One of the reasons the Corvette got pulled on at higher speeds is that big spoiler. In a R&T road test of the M7 Z06, they stated the Z07 package cut 9 mph off the Z06's top speed. That drag affects acceleration, Big Time, and exponentially over 60 mph. I didn't order the Z07 package for my 2019 M7 Z06 because A) I don't track the car, 2) I like getting 3 mpg better at 80 mph, and, III) I can think of better ways to spend $7,000. That said, the Mercedes is very impressive. Another totes pro video, maign.
There's a lot of variables at play here. As you mentioned in the beginning, it's odd that the GT-R makes less power but puts down a higher trap speed. But, much like BMW's, many Mercedes vehicles actually put their advertised BHP to the wheels, if not a bit higher. So in reality, the Z06 was down on power comparatively--most likely. Also, the A8 would have been a better race but still no comparison to a DCT. The stage 3 aero didn't lend the Corvette any advantages in this comparison, either. As soon as I saw the vehicles and the test criteria, I knew that the GT-R would win in both instances without even watching.
@@pontiacGXPfan He's right- On the rare occasion it isn't covered by warranty I don't mind paying (so far hasn't happened) and sitting in a nice luxury AMG room getting your ass kissed is fine with me. Viper will pull on a stock Z, if they have aero the viper has no trouble. They will pull a ZR1 if they have aero on too. They make the same power stock, but the viper is down a few hundred lbs and have no heat soak. This is just my experience. - Gen V viper owner.
It' d be hard for any Corvette manual or Auto to win against the AMG DCT. They've been doing them for awhile now. The C8 DCT I doubt can win too. And welcome back man. Thirdly, we're waiting for that usual 'one guy' in the comments section.
@Montro-City I don’t know, maybe we scared off that one guy. But you never know, it’s only been a day. I personally think the A8 would’ve stood a slightly better chance but the C8 Stingray DCT has no chance. The shifts may be as quick but it doesn’t nearly have enough power to compete in this segment.
@@DanWangFilms A8 🤔 Or did you mean the R8??? Even that one won't stand a chance against the AMG GT-R. It's NA. It won't keep up. If a 650hp car was defeated hands down, there's no way a 605hp will stand a chance.
Yeah auto vs manual makes it an unfair comparison. There's also the cost issue, the GTR costs three times as much money. But then there's also the issue of the GTR being the fastest version of the AMG GT, while the Z06 is NOT the fastest version of the Corvette. That would be the ZR1. And ZR1s have been clocked, bone stock, doing 9.8 @ 140 mph.
chulo flow not what I’m saying at all. C8 base bs Amg. We put our base model against Mercedes flagship at 4 times the price to show them what Chevrolet has accomplished at a fraction of the price
The Z06 is alright and has a big engine but the Mercedes Murdered the Z06 on both runs in my opinion...German engineering puts out the Speed regardless of horsepower...Z06 650hp vs GTR 577hp...
In my opinion that was very close.. props to the z06 driver.. interesting that the z06 has more power and in a manual should lose less power than in its automatic form. My guess is the results would be the same if not worst if the z06 was automatic... Them Germans dont play when it comes to being efficient... I love them GTR's
Love your videos...but at the end of the day, it comes down to price versus performance and as you said, the Mercedes runs three times the amount than the Z06. Given the performance numbers, Z06 is clearly the winner. If you were to give Corvette another $50k (cough, cough...have it run against the ZR1) to upgrade the car which would still be substantially priced under the Mercedes, it would eat the Mercedes up at the track all day long. I recommend that at the end of the video where you post the stats you reminder the viewer the cost of each car by pricing out the models tests.
I get your point but at the end of the day- I have owned both and the fact is as a car a daily driver or even a weekend cruiser (why?) the AMG GTR is 3 times the car. The Vtee's build quality is embarrassing in many ways, the materials used nd the way they are put together is pretty shockingly bad. When you buy a car yeah drag times are a bragging right but not much more. I have a stage 3 with carbon fiber brakes done on my GTR and even without it on a road course it would wear the vette out especially multiple laps where durability matters. If you want a nice performance car it is hard to beat the GTR in every objective way except maybe the drag strip. Yes it cost more but it is also so much more car. And the best news is AMG GTR owners don't get upset if you don't wave on the rare occasion you see another one.

The result might be different if race with your old auto Z06
Merc dragged the vette the whole way, it’d be less of a gap maybe
The A8 would beat it no doubt
The corvette has 660hp while the amg gtr has 580, the c7 Z can run sub 11 seconds on the quarter mile while the amg gtr can't do better than 11 flat.
The dual clutch transmission is way faster than the a8 on the vette. It's engineered better but costs more.
I'd say for it's price the vette wins, for the amg gtr money you'll get a c7 zr1 which undoubtedly beats it

Autos are a bit quicker to 60 but above that a very good stick shift jockey and good gearing will pull ahead.
It is gratifying to see someone under the age of forty appreciating a true American classic like the 'Vette.

Great videos bro keep them coming
It would’ve been more fair to run a Z06 with the 8 speed auto, but it would have actually been to run a ZR1 vs the AMG GTR?
Manual C7 Z06 is my dream car!

Cmon!! A z06 against amg gtr? A fair comparison would be a zr1
Match up would’ve been better with the Corvette ZR1 against the AMG

Track Day thanks for the reply. Can we rent their track? Or is it open to public? Cheers!
