  • We found wild cottontail rabbits in the garden and we decided to nurse them temporarily. The reason why we rescued (baby cotton tail rabbits) was because of the predators like raccoons and feral cat. Yes, we look after them for a while then brought them back in their nest so mama bunny can nurse them . CCTV camera installed connected to the computer and they were monitored. Next video -cctv footage.

Predators (feral cat and raccoons) was the reason why we rescued the babies... we installed cctv camera and always check in the computer. You'll see how the mom nursing them while under danger... mom was not able to protect . They will be eaten by the raccoons . see more details in the video.

Hello all. Wildlife Rehabilitator here---if you ever find bunnies that look like the bunnies in the video please leave them unless they are obviously injured. These bunnies were being very well cared for by mom and she only comes around at dawn and dusk. Trying to “help” these bunnies will do more harm than good.

They looked pretty healthy and well-fed when you found them. The mother was most likely still taking care of them. The mom only comes a couple times a day to feed them in order to not lead predators to her babies. You have to make sure they are truly abandoned before trying to raise them yourself. Also treating them like pets is not good as they need to know how to live on their own in the wild.

They weren’t abandoned…the mother cottontail only comes to the nest 1-2 times a day during the night or very early morning. It’s to keep predators from discovering where the nest is. These babies appear well fed and hydrated already. So in actuality you stole these babies from a mother who was caring for them. They will have little round tummies when mom is feeding them. Also these are wild cottontails and not pet rabbits and shouldn’t be handled like this. It will make them lose their fear of humans. This is why a lot of states don’t allow everyday people to care for wildlife, must be done by a permitted or licensed wildlife rehabilitator

Just wondering how long you waited to see if the mother came back! Every year we have a nest of little bunnies that are born under our deck for the past 6 years. The mother sometimes doesn’t come back for a day or two, but always returns, and they will survive on their own nicely. However, our yard is huge than all fenced in.But they do find their way. I actually befriended one of them. Her name is Mia. She became a mother her self so now I call her Mamma Mia lol. Just wondering if one day you’ll be able to put them out in the wild not sure if they will survive on their own now.

These bunnies are very well-fed and cared for...you should have left them in their nests. Mama rabbits do not stay with their babies. They only nurse and care for them twice a day and sometimes only once a day. Usually it's at a time when no other predators are around. Nursing bunnies is very private business. I raise rabbits and my does (mama) will only nurse when no one is watching or around...even though they know me. I've only caught a mama nursing a few times. Next time you run across a nest of healthy kits...leave them where they are. If you come back to check on them, and they look like they haven't been fed or are listless, then take them to a wild life rehabilitator. They are very difficult to raise by hand. The kits you found look to be about 3 weeks...which is about the time mama will stop nursing and the bunnies go on their own.

I know you had good intentions. I sure hope you made sure the mother rabbit definitely came back to care for them when you put the babies back in there nest because if the mother had realized they were gone, she's not going to come back to nurse them. She's going to assume something got them and they'll die after you put them back. Secondly, even if they ARE put back in there nest, but it doesn't look how she left it or like something got into it, she's going to assume they were taken. Even if there were predators around, taking rabbits from there nest like this is never a good idea and can lead to way more harm than good.
