  • This is a short little video of the restoration project we did on a 1989 Jeep Wrangler YJ. When the Jeep came to us the paint was bad and needed a little body work. It was repainted and in the factory Spinnaker blue. Since the suspension needed refreshing we installed a Skyjacker 2.5" lift kit and also a shackle reversal on the front. Wheels and tires consist of a classic 33" BFG All Terrain and polished bullet hole wheel combo. Mechanically the Jeep needed a few things such as a carburetor replacement from Weber and the rear Dana 35 needed a rebuild. Overall this YJ project came out clean and is a great little weekend get away vehicle.

I like it. I can tell you from extensive experience that with the tires sticking that far out past the fenders that the entire side of the Jeep will get quite dirty even just from road grime during wet weather. When mudding you can forget about seeing anything out the side windows as they're going to get covered too.

Nice restoration. Love the attention to details. I'm doing a similar upgrade to an 88. Started by replacing the BBD carb with a holley sniper tbi fuel injection. Can't compare it to the webber, but it's a huge improvement over stock and performs like my 91 YJ with factory mpi fuel injection.

TJ flares will give you a more open wheel well, allows you to open quite a bit. The shake reversal looks odd. I would cut the bracket off and drill hole through the frame, then use longer shake to get height. Maybe put on nice rocker panel protection to keep the body straight. All in all, a very nice job. Looks very clean . Oh yeah, maybe greasable bolts for springs.

I had a spinnaker blue 89 Laredo. First and only vehicle I ever bought brand new. I've had 2 International Scouts, a Pathfinder, an Isuzu Rodeo, a CJ 7, 3 XJ's, a Suburban, and an Avalanche. Tomorrow is my birthday, and I'm returning to my roots, so to speak, and buying myself a 95 YJ.

That shackle reversal has to go. The rear links are begging to be torn off. Not to mention the dynamics the SR induces into the upon braking and acceleration.
Install a better lift than Skyjacker and greaseable bolts.

I had a 95 4 cylinder with 35’s. It took like 40 seconds to get to 45-50. It was just awful and I hated it driving it. Not looking for a race wrangler because they are not built for racing, but that was awful. I ended up getting rid of it and getting a 95 wrangler with the inline 6 4.0, cammed, and with TJ full frame, and rear axle . This wrangler is the complete opposite. This wrangler goes. Anyways I know it is always not that simple to just sell and buy another one. I would recommend upgrading the rear axle to help move them big wheels .

It really depends on what shape your Jeep is in and whether you want a full or partial restoration. Between $50K-$75K would be a good guestimate. There are a ton of variables that will effect cost and timeline of a project like this.
