    Water + electricity = great fireworks! It is the best idea to put HV transformers in such place.

    • @Nixamista
      @Nixamista 8 років тому +1

      Especially with only a grate to cover it - not a man-hole cover or something with no access to the elements. It's not like NYC is in the dessert. It actually rains pretty often here in New York.

    • @Wetboyslim
      @Wetboyslim 8 років тому +2

      This grate, I think, is used to provide adequate cooling of the transformers. But it also open the way for water and metal conductive foreign objects into substation compartment. These underground substations should have a drainage with water pump and automatic control, but these parts is often severely corroded and not working properly. The water level raised during rainy days and the result is on this video.

    • @kjrivas7419
      @kjrivas7419 8 років тому +4

      This happens often in Washington DC where I live. Rarely, if ever these underground faults are because of transformers. More commonly, these are caused by water seepage into faulty cable junctions. The arcing fault often fills the tunnels with gasses from burning insulation's that eventually explode with spectacular results, the bang often being heard for several blocks. Often, the grates upstream start smoking too, from the overheated cables. Big cities don't use reclosers and cutouts for fear of darkening city blocks. Hence these arcing faults can go on for over an hour before the fault is located at the plant and the power to it finally cut off.

    • @Wetboyslim
      @Wetboyslim 8 років тому +2

      Cable junction manholes in Saint-Petersburg, RU, where I live, have a heavy full metal cover, instead of grates. And all cables in it have sealed junction boxes, completely filled with special isolation hydrophobic compound-thermoplastic, water can`t enter in such box, even if it will be corroded, damaged or have loose fasteners on its ends. Some of this boxes are buried completely underground with no maintenance access for many years. Arc faults on these cables are very rare, some manholes may have completely water submerged cables and joints. But the transformers fires is taking place sometimes.

    • @EphemeralProductions
      @EphemeralProductions 4 роки тому

      there are many cities that have transformers underground right under open grates like that. I think they even do in my small city. It's a common thing. It allows for airflow around the transformer; they tend to get quite hot.

    looks like even though NYC has supposedly changed a lot in the last 20-30 years, one thing that hasn't changed is people being unfazed and courageous and just walkin' on like nothing was happening. LOL

    Had an electrical fire in a junction box just outside my house recently, it threw 15' sparks and sounded just like this one. Called the fire department, they send one truck. A single firefighter walked over to it, scratched his head a bit and went in search of the breaker. He found it in a minute and that was pretty much that.
    This seems a bit excessive in comparison.

    water fog does not conduct as much electricity as a straight stream so since almost every liquid conducts electricity the best answer is if you ever have to use spray bottle near an appliance always make sure it is a mist or adjusted to spray if it does pull a current it hopefully will not be fatal

      There is no chemicals that you can put on high voltage. There is some for voltage below 1000V but in this is not our case because of arc power. Trust me i'm an electrician :D
