Jeremy Corbyn full interview: Nato, arming Ukraine and the future of Labour

- Jeremy Corbyn has told Times Radio he thinks NATO should be "disbanded" along with all with "all military alliances".
Speaking to John Pienaar on Drive in an interview due to be broadcast after 4pm today, the former Labour leader also refused to rule out setting up his own party at the next General Election.
ON NATO BEING DISBANDED
JP: "If the time was right to disband NATO at the fall of the Soviet bloc in the light of the Ukraine invasion, do you now today, as you sit there, still believe it would be right to disband NATO or for Britain to leave?"
JC: "I would want to see a world where we start to ultimately disband all military alliances. The issue has to be what's the best way of bringing about peace in the future? Is it by more alliances? Is it by more military build up? Or is it by stopping the war in Ukraine and the other wars, which you haven't mentioned at all in this discussion that are going on at the present time, which are also killing a very large number of people? And ask yourself the question, do military alliances bring peace? Or do they actually encourage each other and build up to a greater danger? I don't blame NATO for the fact that Russia has invaded Ukraine, what I say is look at the thing historically, and look at the process that could happen at the end of the Ukraine war."
JP: "Your conclusion at the end of the argument you've just given is that it would be right to disband NATO, now?
JC: "Look, it's not going to be disbanded now. What I think will happen is some kind of much deeper security discussion, as indeed NATO was having a security discussion with Russia until last year. They were even having joint exercises only three years ago. My view is that military alliances tend to build up a mirror image of each other."
ON ARMING UKRAINE
JP: "Were you to be Prime Minister today, I just was looking for a very clear one word answer, you would be supplying all the weapons that this country and others are supplying?"
JC: "I would be supporting Ukraine's right to defend itself. But I would be also making the point which I've made in this interview, that we have to also be, which I don't detect from anything Boris Johnson or Biden have said, actually demanding some kind of dialogue and peace."
ON SETTING UP HIS OWN PARTY
JP: "Is it your hope that your constituency now, Islington North, stands by you at the next general election?"
JC: "My Labour Party membership was briefly suspended. I was reinstated as a party member unanimously by a panel of the NEC of National Executive Committee of the party. Subsequently, I lost the Labour Party whip, therefore not a member of the parliamentary Labour Party. I think it's a wrong, totally unjustified decision. And the local party members and the constituents I speak to, and I speak to a very large number of them, feel it's extremely wrong and unfair, and they hope that maybe it's a good opportunity after the local elections that the whip should be restore."
JP: "Would you rule out starting a new political party maybe building on your peace and justice project?"
JC: "I don't know what the future is going to bring. I am focused on representing my constituency, being a member of parliament and on saying to the Labour Party, to win the next election, you have to appeal to people. And you have to appeal to people on the basis of economic justice and changes in the power structures within our society. Abandoning policies that would achieve that, particularly public ownership, is not going to excite people."

Journalists that interrupt and try to put words in the interviewed person are biased and damage the quality of the interview

Apparently all journalists are doing this garbage. Independent media does exists, however they are being smeared and silenced by corporate propaganda media, like CNN, Fox and oh yes BBC, not to mention internet algorithm. The best independent and investigative journalist IMHO are Glenn Greenwald, Aaron Mate and Max Blumenthal, as they never publish without receipts.
This interviewer (?John Pienaar) persisted in attempting to put words on Corbyn's mouth. I am no supporter of JC (the opposite in fact), but his treatment here was rude and unfair. He should have been given time to answer without interruption and being subjected to cheap lawyers' railroading techniques. He faced it all with remarkable patience.
Yeah, it was all a bit cheap.
I do support him but I really appreciate a sincere honest comment on here from someone with an opposing viewpoint. So refreshing to read instead of the cheap ad hominem attacks. Respect to you.
He's trying to press Corbyn for an actual foreign policy position.

The comments below are incredible. To think that someone who didn't cheat his expenses, not in the pay of corporate lobbyists, has consistently stood by workers on picket lines as their wages have stagnated or fallen for the past 15 years, committed to fixing our broken housing system and in the words of Winston Churchill prefering more 'jaw jaw to war war' when it comes to war and peace is so vilified shows how broken this country is. Clearly a lot of mass self-loathing to prefer Johnson who broke the law so casually and laughs in your faces. Sad.

Not an interview but an interrogation in which Corbyn is made to agree throughout to the opinions and even the wording of a host whose brain switches off two or three words into each response . "I wanted just a one-word answer ... "

agree or disagree.... and I do disagree with him, but geez, give the guy room to answer. so many interruptions and putting words in his mouth. if you don't want to listen to his answers, don't interview him. I thought this was a very frustrating interview. all we got was , yes, they disagree.
Corbyn could hardly give a straight answer to any of the questions. Particularly dire was his (several times) weaseling out of saying whether he’d send arms to Ukraine so they could defend themselves.

He's a politician with decades of experience, a former leader of HM's Opposition, and he hasn't changed an opinion in about 3 decades... how much more prepared to fight his own corner with an interview should we expect him to be??

I'm 68. I was always interested in politics and current affairs. Since the start of the war, for the first time in my adult life I've stopped listening to my national news service and also to current affairs programs.

The interviewer is incredibly biased and conducts the interview as a grand inquisitor. I admire Jeremy's patience.

This is actually what a good interviewer does. They are supposed to play devils’ advocate, and to challenge the interviewee’s views. It invokes good discourse and gets the interviewee to both think deeply about their opinions but also how to justify them when under pressure. Andrew Neil does the same, he is neutral and will pick the opposite side of the political spectrum to the interviewee; and again play devils’ advocate. It is what makes a great interviewer.

Appears to be that this interviewer used the platform to forward his own view primarily. Such a biased interview not expected from a " professional journalists. " Corbyn very cool under the circumstances.

The interviewer is trying to skewer Jeremy into coming up with something untoward. He forgets that Jeremy has been thinking through and articulating his positions on war and peace since Vietnam. He's hardly likely to just blab something off the top of his head. I'm afraid the inter viewer is out of his league on this subject anyway.

I love how Corbyn sticks to his answers, and continues his answers when being cut off. His replies do actually follow on from the interviewer, but he doesn't get backed into a corner with his answers. He is a professional speaker. Made me chuckle, as you can see when he's being interrupted etc.

If Ukraine had never handed over its nuclear arsenal the war would never have happened and Ukraine would never have had any need to seek the protection of NATO. Russia gave Ukraine security guarantees as did the US so if there is a negotiated settlement any guarantee from Russia will be worthless. This is all going to end badly and all responsibility will be on Russia.
If I had a € for every time Ive read this post pasted in to comments I could retire. They were Russian bombs, they were under agreement returned to Russia and the fuel taken by the US.

Excellent & concise comment. Hindsight being 20/20, In regards to Russia (primarily) Ukraine made a deal with the devil.
For my two bits I would like to see the sanctions against Russia extended to include everything (medical tech/supplies) & that these be left in place for up to a generation.
The russian people will suffer, as they should - for (complacently) inflicting yet another monster on mankind & this would send a message to citizens of every country, that YOU are 100% responsible for your culture & political system.
Otherwise the scenario we are faced with now, where the russian people, just like the generation of Germans alive during WW2, one day will say: "We didn't know."

@ Jeff Betts. Your position seems to ignore the fact that NATO has been provoking this conflict by creeping eastward and trying to get as close to the Russian border as possible.
NATO is a military organization that was created to fight Russia and it is understandable that by getting so close to the Russian border, the Russians felt thretened and that has been goig on for years with Russia asking NATO to refrain from what was perceived as an aggressive stance.
You do not seem to realize that when the Russians put missiles in Cuba, a few hundred miles from Florida, then president Kennedy had a similar reaction but executed in a far more intelligent fashion because it led to a discussion and a final agreement.
In today's conflict not once have we heard the word "peace", "peace conference" or something similar coming out of the White House. Very different times from the Good Friday accords or the Camp David accords where, in both cases, people with deep distrust towards each other did finally agree on some sort of balanced calm.
You do not seem to sense that when world wide famous universities cancel courses on Russian litterature, Russian directors are banned from conducting the Paris orchestra and the Cat Lovers World Association is expelling its Russian members, the collective hysteria has just been pumped up by the media to insane limits. It seems that darker interests that neither of us know are at play.
The interviewer needs to be sent to the front. Maybe then he'll appreciate the idea of a ceasefire.
There needs to be a ceasefire but that would require both countries to agree. Russia is constantly violating ceasefires which means the only option is for Ukraine to defend itself which Corbyn made it clear that he does not support arming Ukraine to do so.

Because that’s absolutely not Corbyn’s position at all - the thing he made clear was that he categorically condemns Russian’s invasion, and very much does support helping Ukraine to defend itself.
What kind of journalist batters an interviewee with their own 'views' and then calls that journalism. I think Jezza gives a very good interview considering how contentious most mainstream journalists are. It's a long time since I was a pro journalist, but I'd be asking VERY different questions.

There is no nuance in journalism these days. Journalists always try to force what people say, everything needs a simplistic answer. They can't deal with a fine politician like Corbyn because we wont fall for their tricks. Pienar is a good journalist but he is as antagonistic as others in trying to force one answer, when these situations as Corbyn has ably demonstrated in this interview are much more complicated.
It's very shallow journalism, I had to give up watching it.

Not so sure anymore that Pinar is a good journalist. He is still spouting the MSM take on the situation in the area at war. Does the MSM actually have any journalists on the frontline? There isn't much nuance in the topic about Ukraine actually, this is one of the few black/white topics. You either support Ukraine militarily or you don't

I think the approach of not stooping to their level is the making of a huge leap forward in our society - I think the approach of politicians ammending their identification with their values for the sake of electability opens the floodgates for the media to push their agenda - if one is to stick to their values, they will inevitably be outed in time. I voted for Labour in 2019 and canvassed in my local town. I had previously been a Conservative voter but after David Cameron’s leadership I realised that our society was quickly descending into extreme poverty at one end and very wealthy at the other. Mr Corbyn tried to make a fairer society for the many. In the last four years it has radically declined further hence the number of food banks. I’ve been involved with my local branch and it’s really heartbreaking to see children going to school hungry. This happened in my grandfather’s time in 1910 - we are returning to those times, no food, no healthcare no homes for the poor in society. It’s so so wrong - when will people see this??

As a working man I had no representation in that bloody place until Jeremy became leader. I joined the Labour party rapidly and left just as rapidly when the tossers behind the right wing press conived to get rid of him due to their fear of a just and fair society he would bring. Just read headline on the BBC about Starmer stating that Jeremy would not be accepted back because of this interview. Well done Times. Used to be a good investigative media, now a poor shadow of journalism. Have a look at a real journalist, a French war correspondent, Anne-Laure Bonnel. A true impartial journalist.

Not hugely impressed with Corbyn's reply's but nor am a impressed with the tone and nature of the interview. Where the interviewer was trying to put words in his mouth and narrow his responses into sound bites. Very poor communication that I doubt represents much at all. As a supporter of Corbyn, I think that’s a fair assessment. Disagreeing with someone is fine. Having interviewers trying to created false binaries and condensed soundbites which are intended to not inform the listener.

Don't think much of this interviewer, he isn't interested in interviewing Mr Corbyn, the interviewer doesn't listen, all he wants is to push his own opinions and keeps reframing what Mr Corbyn has said with his own opinions, how unfortunate that you can't allow Mr Corbyn to say what he means without false reinterpretation.

I am no fan of the labour party but Corbyn must be admired for his stance on issues which he disagreed with the Government on. I do not particularly like all his political opinions but he is a man of integrity and as such should be acknowledged.

You'd think from some of the responses below that Corbyn wants Ukraine to surrender. In fact he asserts the Ukrainians right to defend themselves and supports arming them. He supports negotiation with the Russians....but since Zelensky is doing that (however futile it might be) that is hardly controversial. Essentially his position is very mainstream and non-controversial despite all the tory/blairite bs below.
The problem is Russia's terms are ludricous. Russia didn't even try negotiating annexing territory before it just invaded.

As an Eastern European old enough to remember living under moscow's rules, I can't listen to Jeremy speaking about this war. I simply can't. He "acknowledges" this war is horrible and then with the same breath preaches for "peace talks" that mean giving Ukraine to russia. He - I believe intentionally - omits one very important thing: if Ukrainians are left to russia they will die. Prolonging this war will lead to more deaths and suffering, but letting russia take over Ukraine will lead to actually even more deaths and suffering!
I used to be one of those people who fell for Jeremy, I put so much hope in him and I was an avid supporter. Now I'm in a position where I'm enormously grateful he's nowhere close to any power or decision making. He's such a massive disappointment.

This should be interesting. I voted for Corbyn twice. Since the Ukrainian war started I keep thinking to myself thank god Corbyn didn't convince anyone to disarm our nuclear weapons. I have been very disappointed with the left wing response to this war.

His argument is utterly shameful and actually illogical. The greater the ability Ukraine have to take back there own country the sooner the war will end. No one wants war, apart from those who start them. We need to act more swiftly and decisively to stop Putin now. If he gets away with this he won't stop and it will embolden tyrants throughout the word to take similar action.

at 6:30" that was quite a jump from the logic he was attempting to follow. you can agree that a country has a right AND are right to defend themselves and also hold that other countries aren't right, but do have the right to help them.
It's fine stuff- campaign for a ceasefire, disarmament etc - but unfortunately it just doesn't take human nature into account.
War - with changing alliances - is a constant feature of history, in fact, all life is competitive, frequently life or death.
Theodore Roosevelt said 'speak softly, but carry a big stick'. Sadly, that makes a lot more sense.
Also, war is a massive money spinner and so will never end.
Especially as the War's been going on since 24th February.
There’s numerous countries which haven’t had a conflict for decades. Imperialism is what’s causing these conflicts around the world, we can choose to be imperialistic, or we can choose not to be.
Do you have to fight your basic instincts every time you leave your house? To stop you from killing somebody who slightly bumps into you? maybe someone body spilt something on you, do you have to fight your instinct to attack them?
Although I strongly disagree with Corbyn, the hatred he receives, especially in Parliament, is quite incredible. I watched yesterday's parliamentary debate and twice folk tried to associate Starmer with Corbyn. He really is persona non grata. From my perspective, Corbyn is very naive about many things and an idealogue in the extreme but he is not immoral like Johnson. Yet sometimes it feels like people hate him even more than Johnson which for me is ethically odd.
I guess a counter-argument is his hubris let Johnson into power which is a valid point but at the end of day Johnson must own his own depravity.
As someone that supported Corbyn for PM & agrees with much of what he stands for, I must say, yours is one of the most pragmatic & even-handed takes *against* Jeremy Corbyn that I've come across. Fair play. 🙌

@@cugal1613 mostly his total lack of pragmatism. I think in order to do some good in this broken world you need to be in the middle of the ideologue/pragmatic spectrum. It is interesting because Corbyn and Johnson represent the two extremes of the spectrum. Johnson stands for nothing and will do whatever is expedient for power, while Corbyn's worldview is so rigid that he will not tone down or even recognise valid nuance even for the sake of winning over a few more voters who do not align with his every view on every topic.
This is why I think some are rightfully a little angry at Corbyn because his utter intransigence opened the way for the worst British government for many generations.
For me it takes quite a breathtaking arrogance to stand up, after leading your party to one of its worst election defeats, and say you have won the argument.

I prefer an interview where we get to hear the opinions of the interviewee, and an interviewer who shows some interest in the answers rather than just trying to get their own point across. I suppose I’m ok the wrong country and time period for either of those things to be a possibility. Either way Corbyn gives a good account of himself.
