California Kingsnake Choice Based Handling

- Jailbird is an almost 2 year old banded California Kingsnake that I adopted. He's very curious and friendly. I do choice based handling with all my snakes, and he's the one always asking to come out to explore.
Of all my different snakes, my king snake is the most social of them all. When I see him cruising along the face of his enclosure I know he wants out, he will come to me when I open it. Absolutely fascinating creatures. That cal king is beautiful !!
Trust is earned. Once you've gotten their trust it's gotta feel so good knowing they are intelligent beings and they've chosen you. ❤ He's beautiful!
Jailbird is absolutely gorgeous!!!! ❤🐍
So awesome, learning so much about their capacity lately. Amazing animals.
That's actually amazing and cute at same
King snakes do this for some reason. It's very interesting that they choose to be handled
I like this approach and I wish I could do it with my ball python. She likes to pop her head up and say hi but will always choose not to be handled if it’s an option. I’d love to get a kingsnake someday!
Same! Kings are a legit goal for me too
can’t relate i’ve had high success forcing young snakes to be handled almost every day and when they’ve become adults i can hold them whenever i want for however long and they’re chill
Of course initially i still have a comfortability procedure though, i make sure they see me every day, i’ll move around something in their tank so they get used to my presence (usually j the water or the rocks), get it used to my smell & then handle if. i only do the forced handling after it first lets me a couple times
I do this with my king, he rarely chooses to but when he does I take him on short walks around the block
I do choice based handling as well, MY choice ☺️
i recently got on of thes little folks! :D feeding him tuesday!
Beautiful snake. I heard kingsnakes often mistake their owners fingers for food. He doesn't bite out of feeding response?
I have two - a 3 yo male and 2yo female and haven't been bit yet. They do get *very* excited for food though, they've sometimes come at me with mouths open and my boy sometimes swings around and tries to grab anything around him. I have fed the male while handling twice, and while I have been bit yet, that ups the chances. I have seen other people get their fingers munched my their snakes though. I don't know about this boys food drive specifically, but it's usually high in kingsnakes and mine often get excited just from the smell, even if its defrosting on the other side of the room. Usually you won't have to worry about a feeding response until they smell food.
I'm excited for when mine gets this big
They do but if caught big from the wild a they have an awesome attitude and lively eating habits but not for someone who is a newbie.
He is kinda cute
