The estimate for the bottle of Louis XIII is absolutely insane. They confirmed that the bottle is baccarat crystal, which even when empty commands a price in the region of £200-£400 and then you have the contents. I've known about this brandy ever since it was featured in the film Cocktail. Even about 15 years ago a bottle would set you back £1500. These days that has risen to closer to £3000. On what planet does a bottle of this type decrease in value? And by such a margin. If that is the case then don't buy new, just look out for the auctions. Bonkers!!!
I've sold the empty casket as one item, the empty bottle as another item and the Baccarat stopper as a separate item. To say we made a mint would be an understatement. They were private sales.
The auctioneer had sold one from the same run 6 months previously for £480.....price was fair, if a little conservative, but she made the choice not to go to auction.
100% agree with you. £2800 if you're lucky, closer to £3000. Even 20+ years ago it was still selling for about £1500. Makes absolutely no sense to value it the way they did, even if one had sold recently at auction. Whoever bought it got an incredible deal.

David Dickenson got the estimate right for the decanter. £320 would buy you the decanter, that is around the price you would pay on ebay, but Dickenson was completely wrong to be dismissive of the liquer as practically worthless. The cognac alone is worth over £1000. High value spirits are like commodity, there is a base value that it should not fall below. The price they give is wrong and that lady was robbed.

That is why there is rich picking in auctions that not specialised. I picked up a Hennessey Paradis for £100 in an auction that deals in tats and furniture. Though this one is not the going rate and true estimate are around £1300. Once the camera stops rolling I bet that dealer put the bottle in a spirit auction and made £800-900 profit.

Right now a bottle is between $4800 and $5200USD the empty decanter is running between $200-300…boy I wish I could have bought that from her…
