PREORDER Glenn's memoir, LATE ADMISSIONS: CONFESSIONS OF A BLACK CONSERVATIVE. Available here or wherever you get your books: wwnorton.com/books/9780393881349
In this clip from a Substack subscriber-only Q&A session, Glenn addresses a reader who wants him to condemn past guests for the supposedly antisemitic comments the reader believes they've made.
Recorded March 30, 2024
It was not a serious question. It was a manipulation. An invitation to denounce people.
Biased mentality. They want everyone to be biased like them, extremists.
Yes. Seconding this motion.
I as another black person support Cornel West 💯!!!😘
What has your race got do with it? You support an opinion because you think it is right, not because of your genes. Pathetic
I so respect Dr. Loury's succint response. I wonder what tempts one to submit such an inquiry.
The fact West attempted to illustrate Jewish money as the controlling factor to the issue surrounding the University systems not bending to the demands of children perhaps?
@@Joe-pc3hsand that's 'antisemitic' how exactly?
@@Joe-pc3hsthat’s literally what’s happening. The universities don’t wanna cut ties with their wealthy investors despite the outcry of millions.
@@gabyelbebe831 Thats an assumption, and one based on very tangible anti Jewish tropes.
@@Joe-pc3hs That's quite the stretch. But it's empty.
Omg I'm dying at John's response 🤣🤣🤣
Objectively antisemitic? Because they’re critics of Israel? That’s ridiculous. Loved your response, Dr. Loury.
Glen is a boss.
I will criticize them for exploiting the conflict for Marxism.
Amazing comment by John. LOL. "It's not my fault these people were on the show" LOL
It's great to hear you’re back in action! Take your time healing and recovering. We’ll do fine with Professor McWhorter and your mini-videoclips in the meantime.
God Bless you Dr. Loury! Hope your recovery is going well.
Thank you for having the integrity NOT to submit to this idiocy.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Glenn!
No doubt the person objecting has made lots of noise about "cancel culture" over the past few years.
The question shouldn't be about denouncing -- but a question about whether there's agreement with any the four previous guests mentioned in the response --
Briana Joy Gray, Cornel West, Irving Finkelstein and John Mearsheimer-- regarding their positions on the Israel-Hamas war since they all condemn Israel. The race
of the guests should not be the issue at all.
Each of these characters (I think you mean Norman Finkelstein) have a history of neurotic disposition - and clear signs of anti social tendency.
They are by no means incapable of being right as human beings, but each one shows a bias that goes far beyond a general “Anti-Israel(I)” sentiment.
They have little to cling on to beyond rhetoric, and it drives me insane to see in this era.
Almost every Neo-Nazi group ive seen likes only one Jew - and it’s Norman Finkelstein.
In fact, nearly every extremist group seems to applaud hin.
I don’t believe this is by coincidence, as they align and split over greater interests: I think it’s by design, and I see the works of that intention, in every conversation on the internet.
There is no heat Dr Loury....it's an absurd provocation, entirely deserving of your curt dismissal. Carry on.
A more reasonable question would be to ask Glenn if he agrees with specific positions that his previous guests have taken on particular issues, and to give his own positions on those issues.
GL is a BOSS!
It was a crap question but the vehemence of Loury’s reply was instructive. He even played the race card. Evidently blood is thicker than water
Glenn was right to be vehement. If anything, he should be asked to denounce Finkelstein, who is worse than West. So if he is askesd to denounce West because he is Black, he should be pissed off.
Thank you sir: free speech and thought matter and you guys exemplify the honest inquiry that sustains us in these areas. Blessings.
Bravo Glenn, way to go mate🎉🎉
Glenn has been very principled. Hats off to him.
Cornel West is a great soul. He is entitled to a position, even when questioning that posturing. I believe he has earned it.
A....men!
Well done Glenn and John, fair and level headed dudes.
Reminds me of Colin Wright, the evolutionary biologist who made a very innocuous sub sub tweet about sex being binary. It exploded for all the wrong reasons and then all the sudden a co-author of a journal article about spiders, 8 years prior, was getting yelled at for having author that article with Colin. That is the logic of that question to Glenn.
The only person one should ever denounce is oneself.
Johns answer was funny but Glenn's answer was very appropriate.
Cornell is a lightweight...
Whether he is or not doesn't change the fact he's exactly right on this issue.
I like Glenn’s response to condemning someone else’s opinion on a topic taking place on a different continent! We have no idea what conditions on the ground are! It’s hard enough coming to a consensus on the George Floyd death… was it a drug related death, did the police deliberately kill George Floyd? If we can’t come to a consensus on that… how the heck can we really know what is happening in the hellhole Middle East???? Who did what to who? Who started it? Whose land is it? We know nothing!! That’s why we should not be jumping into wars we know nothing about.
Who's "we"? It may be true that you or I are not well enough informed to have a robust opinion about the matter, but American intellectuals and American policy makers can very well be informed if they choose to be. You don't have to have been born in a place or even to have visited a place in order to know about it.
Generally speaking, even if someone has an opinion I strenuously oppose, they're still allowed to have that opinion. Denouncing people is just another way of telling them to shut up -- a chickenshit move if ever there was one.
Dr West has been talking about this topic for years he's not a Johnnie come lately and his views aren't antisemitic they are anti colonialism he says in almost every conversation A Jewish life has the same value as a Palestinian life. The word antisemitic is tossed around so much it's lost value
Whatever happened to just disagree with people?
Come on Glenn. Don't be so disingenuous. You are quite aware that a certain demographic of your show/podcast only tunes in to get their jollies off from your anti-black rants. You might be a great Econ scholar and McWhorter an esteemed linguist, but those attributes are hard for black intellectuals to sell except when they have a racial angle. You better recognize, Professor.
I recently heard Cornel West on Piers Morgan's show call both his host as well as a young black man who was speaking against the pro-Hamas demonstrations at UCLA that was also a guest "racists". West screamed his accusation, deliberately drowning out the young man who was quietly speaking, as well as at Piers himself, from time to time. Having previously held West in high esteem I was deeply saddened. I wondered if he had lost his mind. His is not a political opinion;; in my view,, he was expressing very passionate anger--even hatred against Israel. However, I do not think you are responsible for his views.on anything. I stopped watching The Hill because of Briahna Joy Gray's hatred of Israel which is palpable when the news is about the Gaza war or the demonstrations.. She is clearly a very intelligent and articulate person; (I grudgingly admire her.) But the hate for Israel is too much. in evidence Again, you are not responsible for her views and expressions. I saw your show with Finkelstein with whom I was not familiar at the time. I do not watch his interviews now because they seem to be virulently anti-Israel. I am not an uncritical fan of Israel, but the hate that Israel and Jewish people are experiencing from all sides is deeply concerning to me. I recently listened to an interesting online conversation about the history of anti-semitism in the black community. One theory that was stated was that this anti-semitism is based on the differing present realities of 2 peoples who share deep historical suffering,.One has been very successful in this country in multiple ways, and one which has continued to experience lower economic and professional attainments. Envy? That seems simplistic, but maybe. What do you and John think? You often bring up Jewish success in your conversations, but I have not heard you speak about black anti-semitism.
Great points. West is garbage, screaming racist at Morgan and Gray hate's Israel and is pretty close to being a Holocaust denier in terms of 10/7. But Finkelstein is way worse, so why would Glenn have to denounce West? Becuase he is Black? On ther other hand, West is garbage. Not only about Israel, but he is a shill for the FBI, going on about Trump being a threat to democracy, when in fact the threat to democracy is FBI, CIA, and Dems going after Trump and trying to jail him for political crimes, Stalin style. Plus, FBI going after him for nothing in Russiagate and then FBI/CIA censoring the laptop story. That is the threat to democracy.
Israel is actively under investigation by the international court of justice for committing genocide and you’re talking about antisemitism??? Israel has killed 30,000+ innocent civilians in the last few months, the majority of them being women and children and you’re talking about anti-semitism??? How cynical can you possibly be??? Go to the universities and talk to the protesters on the ground. You won’t find an ounce of anti-semitism there. What you will find is a diverse groups of students/supporters (many of them Jewish) who are all vehemently opposed to the atrocities being facilitated by their country and universities.
Obviously your comment wasn't directed to me, but I can tell you, so-called black antisemitism has very little to do with envy. There is a perception that the 'black image' has been used by the entertainment industry as a wick to draw away white antisemitism by promoting 'racial strife' between the two major Christian populations.
There is a perception that the black identity has been used throughout the our history to enable Jewish ascendancy in _this_ country.
There is a perception that the entertainment industry has promoted an American caste system where the Jewish image is maintained as the Brahmin caste image while blacks remain the bottom caste image.
These are _perceptions_ not necessarily reality.
But it's very naive to believe so-called black antisemitism is based on envy.
Lol you started by criticizing cornell for calling Piers Morgan racist (an accusation he doesnt thrown around all the time line some of his peers) to using the tired antisemitic label that zionists use so loosely, nobody outside of your shrinking cult takes seriously anymore when used by any you.
You're responsible for everything they say now! You didn't know that? Dr loury based af.
Haah awesome
Podcasters shouldn't necessarily feel the need to denounce the antisemitism and racism of such guests as Cornel West and Briahna Joy Gray. However, it is possible to have an opinion on the Middle East without being anti-Jewish or anti-white and having those types of guests on helps to balance things out.
Neither Cornell West nor Brianna Joy are antisemitic.
Can one imagine the same responses hurled at anyone who might've spoken out against the "Holocaust" as it was taking place?
Why are those speaking out against the obvious massacre taking place being attacked rather than supported? On a worldwide scale.
Does this not illustrate the power of the Israeli lobby as discussed by Mearsheimer, globally?
Glenn should denounce Brianna Joy Grey simply for being an insufferable bonehead.
2nded! 3rded, 4thed as well
What a dumb question.
Its antisemitism to oppose genocide. Its anti semitism to stand for human rights.
No it's also not racist or Islamophobic to defend Israel right to defend itself
@@ErikWeinstein genocide and war crimes are not defense. Fortifying defenses is defense.
Its not a "war" its one sided massacre and Israel is not defending anything except its international law breaking policies.
You defending what Israel is doing is just defending genocide.
This implies absolutely that they are committing genocide, or human rights violations - and not the country they oppose (and the entire surrounding region).
It’s simple propaganda, but it’s effective - and does concern me how easy some people are controlled.
I stand by a Glen, Cornell, and John to voice their opinions - I believe in the freedom to do so, but I disagree with Glen here, and I disagree with Cornell West.
I don’t understand what Cornell has contributed, and seems to have a life long history of being wrong.
@@ErikWeinstein sure it is not but this case does not look like defence.
@@russetbulba3199 ok. But, anytime anybody disagrees with Israel there's always people that will call them anti-semites and anytime anybody defends Israel there will be people that will call them racist or islamophobic. Both sides do it
I enjoy the rare times I get to agree with Glenn on anything, because . . . novelty. And I suppose I could leave it at that, but I won't. There is a question, that carbon based life form's (I assume, not an AI,) question begs. And that is . .. since that kind of . . . with us or against us, thinking is more of a hobgoblin of conservative thought (liberals, democrats are less likely to be lock step on most issues.) How come you chose to get all agitated by it, instead of deconstructing and discussing the meta level toxicity of that kind of thinking?
Just my thought on the vid. My pet peeve of late is, the the poverty of the quality of discussion and conversation. I would like to see the bar raised. That was a missed opportunity for raising the bar. People seem too used to used to trash level, impoverished thinking. And that question was not only trash, but an opportunity to actually explain why it was trash level thinking? Instead of just "punting" it away, like that.
Just my thought.
Aule22…. Give it a rest. Seriously, drink some milk and go lay down!
West is a kook and I don't take his positions on Israel specifically or geopolitics generally seriously. I get that comparing the situation in Gaza to Warsaw is offensive (and wrong), but I don't think we can unilaterally declare West as an antisemite. However, even if West were to come out tomorrow and give a 20-minute speech praising Hitler, I don't get why people would think Dr Loury should feel even remotely responsible. People are responsible for their own opinions and we aren't collectively required to shun and exile everyone who may or may not have overstepped the Overton Window. This whole "platforming" paranoia has gotten well and truly out of hand.
denounce is an ugly word.
Im sorry, but instead of supposing the question was based on race, it would have been wiser to watch the interview before commenting. I cant believe I even had to say that.
Its possible that the question asker was only aware of the two black israel critic show guests in question or only remembered them, but asking if this is based in race isn’t unreasonable. The other two guests he mentioned are MUCH more inflammatory when it comes to Israel critique than West or Joy Gray.
@@blakereid5785 Yet West has a history of antiSemitic rhetoric, how did that caveat escape you?
@@Joe-pc3hs West, Joy Grey, Finkelstein, all have mostly the same claims and critiques of Israel. I’m not familiar with the 4th guy named. But West is “antisemitic” they all are. Joy Grey’s views on Israel are significantly influenced by her many talks with Finkelstein. He has dedicated decades to the writing on the subject. Leaving him out doesn’t guarantee but suggests the request of denouncement was influenced by them and Glenn both being black. This channel dedicates a lot of time to race, so it isn’t a stretch.
@@blakereid5785 Im going to have to first ask why you put "antiSemitism" in parenthesis, as that would better clarify your position on the matter. Because critiquing Israeli law and antiSemitism are not synonymous.
@@Joe-pc3hs The claim is a “history of antisemitic rhetoric”. A claim that i do not intend to validate for the purpose of defending his question about the racial component. The other two people he mentioned have also had this claim against them before.
Oh Yes indeed! Glenn Loury, can take the heat for refusing to denounce Cornel West. West is entitled to his opinions, but West's opinions can still be denounced, and Glenn Loury PROUDLY proclaims his refusal to denounce West's opinions. We are generally speaking Glenn Loury admirers, but he can be a weasel on occasions.
What are you implying?
Why would he denounce an opinion that is so clearly correct?
Jew hatred and antisemitism are not legitimate positions with which one may disagree.
People expressing such views should be called out, denounced, shunned and excluded from civil discourse.
Debate grants legitimacy to their hateful creed. Not denouncing antisemites, American Nazis, Klan advocates, grants their evil causes legitimacy.
It is fair to say that both have disgusting antisemitic views.
Criticizing Israeli policy vis-à-vis the Palestinian people or their handling of the war in Gaza isn’t antisemitic.
What an absurd thing to say.
@@Home4Facts Im not really tracking as to how Wests illustrations of Jewish money controlling faculty response to pro terror demonstrations, is a criticism of Israeli policy.
The mistreatment of the Palistinians, the legitimate Semitic people, by Polish, Hungarian and Russian zionists and their descendants for these past 76 years is the only thing "antisemitic ".
Absurd
@@Home4Facts But it's not absurd to say it is antisemitic to say Hamas is an existential threat to Israel as their stated aim in their charter is to annihilate the entire state of Israel and set up another Islamic state in its place.
Sounds like some liberal questioning to me
No, but if you're going to have someone on your show, you ARE responsible for challenging their false claims, ignorance, bigotry, and blood libel. . . . It's called ETHICS. Maybe you should educated yourself in the FACTS of ancient history and recent history about a particular region if you're going to have guests on who wish to talk about that topic. Otherwise, what's the point in having them on your show?!?
