    Great build up! Acrylic nails work amazing as fake teeth. Cut them up in various shapes and build latex up onto them. Super realistic! Cheers!

    ...this is probably the only tutorial that makes me want to get liquid latex.
    and you really show how this can be used to make a whole prosthetic. Cool!
    (I've only ever seen people make little patches on their face with some toilet paper. nothing extreme)

    A-mazing! For some reason I thought the piece done without the life-cast would be less succesful, but I liked it even more, in that he could open his mouth. Just inspiring stuff. Thanks.

    It does - which is great for durability. It pulls out quite easily if you massage an oily makeup remover (or even Vaseline/petroleum jelly) into it first. Oils break down the rubber and it will flake out rubbing it with a wet wipe.

  • @stuartbray

    I am sure it would.
    So long as it dries flexible, and returns to it's shape once stretched it should work. Most standard latex is 'pre-vulcanised' latex, and has been treated to snap back into shape when dry.
    The latex used in foam latex is a high-solids latex with less water, and doesn't really snap back - it kinds stays stretched out so needs baking (which 'vulcanises' the rubber).
    You would have to track that down tho, you won't likely get that by accident so don't worry!

  • @stuartbray

    Thanks - I like to explain things in a way that I would have wanted to have it broken down. For some that is too involved and detailed, but that's what I like.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому +1

    Absolutely - the thing was just to show a process and people can make it their way to suit their tastes.
    Often I find exposed teeth make-ups can look too pronounced, as the teeth are actually inside the head behind the cheek and not on the surface of the skin. The trick is to give the appearance of depth without building out too far.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    @coolprincessnot - depends on the ambient temperature of the room. Ideally do all the latexing and pop it into a warm airing cupboard or build up in layers and use a hairdryer. I usually leave the latex overnight, as the saturated tissue and cotton wool absorb a large quantity of latex.

    Hi - I would suggest getting some Pros Aide and mix that with acrylic as that is all that PAX is, and if you want to stick things on skin the Pros Aide is the best price and quality compromise.
    Colouring latex with acrylic will work, although it doesn't bond to the skin or create as thin a layer as Pros Aide. It will peel away more easily which is ok if u don't need it to last all day!
    Wash the blood off under water and allow to dry naturally. Store it somewhere flat or on scrunched tissue.

    Indeed you could, this is by no means a final, definitive or prescriptive method. Mix and match, stir it up and make it your own. You can buy acrylic teeth used to make dentures too - go crazy.
    Just make sure to hide the bodies well afterwards.

    Acrylic paint - it's in the What You Will Need list (unlike the latex which I somehow omitted). 00:33

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  11 років тому

    Yup. When I make pieces for films, a loooot of effort goes into that, as you will see if you check out the Coraline Button Eyes vids I did. This was specifically a down n' dirty cheap thing which almost anyone can do, so the perfect finish is not the am.
    For that, you sculpt, make moulds etc. which requires a lot more skill, materials and time. This was an easy entry-level fun thing.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Try wool and other varying thickness threads. Stretch them out first on a board (maybe tack pins into the board) and pull them tight first, then paint layers of latex onto them.

  • @scopeophile
    @scopeophile 12 років тому

    nice tip for using latex - sometimes (It's rare, put it CAN happen) if you leave each layer a little too long before putting more latex on, it can 'de-laminate' meaning the layers separate from each other... to stop this, rub a bit of lemon juice onto the area you're building up. The citric acid in the juice etches slightly into the latex... giving a much better surface for new latex to be applied

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Yup, I'll bet you could. No need for tissue as much, as the gelatine has the body and thickness that takes much longer to build up in latex. It melts and dissolves with water, so isn't as durable but it would work.

    You can use silicone such as Plat Sil Gel silicones or Sculpt Gel /Third Degree. These cost more, but that is the trade off.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Liquid latex. I added a thickener to speed up the process hence the appearance of bubbles, but without that you just need a few extra layers.

    @XxWeccaxX Cool - thanks for checking it out. You can do some nice stuff with latex - I love it despite the silicone revolution.

    So long as it was an oil based modelling clay such as plasticine, then yes, although usual moulds for latex are plaster as the plaster absorbs the water in latex which helps the drying. A beep blob of latex in plasticine will take a long time to dry.
    If you use water based clay then it may not work well at all as latex has a lot of water and may just turn into a sludgy mess.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Not really - depends on facial hair but the main issue is the time it takes to dry it. I left it for a few days to dry out, so it will be a long process to direct apply. You can build it up in layers, using a blow drier between each layer but that stick takes a long time.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  11 років тому

    I was raised with foam latex, as it was the material of choice when I started. It is rather impractical for most people as it requires a dedicated mixer and oven. It is great for body suits and large pieces where weight is an issue and opacity isn't, but silicone is quicker, easier and more like skin.

    Usually, face casts are taken to make custom appliances so you can't easily find them to buy. You can buy a head form from somewhere like BITY in Texas, or try Monster Makers.
    You can take a lifecast using materials such as alginate and plaster etc, but I wouldn't suggest you try that without some instruction. It is easy to screw it up.

    About half an hour of work, and then a few days to dry, depending on your ambient work room temperature. In Texas in summer, not long. In Sweden in winter, you'll need heating. Cost - depends on where you buy it - Google that.
    As to what you need, it's all in the video.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    It is sturdy in and of itself, but the issue will be perspiration which can loosen the adhesion to the skin, and if you pull faces etc. then that will exacerbate it.
    You can use stronger glues such as Telesis and Pros Aide, but naturally these will cost more.
    So long as you don't compromise your vision or any necessary head movements in order to remain in control of your board, I see no safety issue. Please email pics - I would love to see a skateboarding zombie featured in a blog post.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  11 років тому

    Making it can take as much time as you like - this probably took an hour at a leisurely pace. Then letting it dry takes a day or three, depending on the ambient temperature of where you work.
    Application took about 1/2 hour, but you could slap this on in less than five if everything is to hand. The more time you spend on it then the better it can look.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  11 років тому

    No, it just saves time during application if most of the colouring is done in advance. It is a habit I have from making multiple pieces for shows which need matching paint jobs, and when actor time in the chair is a priority.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Yeah, I am sure that would work ok. The proportions on those heads are usually anatomically unreal, but what you could do is make a map of the appliance shape on a face by marking it through some plastic held against the face.
    Transfer that onto the styrofoam head and you can be more confident where it will sit on the face.

    A little late responding, but yes, if you peel it off the cast to be able to apply, there is no reason why you cant remove it carefully to be reused again later. You may need to use alcohol to clean the back of any remover oils etc but it is perfectly doable.

  • @DrakieRar

  • @stuartbray

    Just do more - build up the skull areas you wish to see, then surround that with the flaps of skin which would have been peeled or torn away to have revealed it. That is much easier to do on a lifecast, but if you don't have a lifecast and do it on a board instead (as in the video) then do several smaller pieces rather than one huge one.
    It is much easier to fit several small pieces than one huge flat one on a curved surface like the face.

    @AngelicaHeartt Just some furniture board. So long as the surface is non porous, almost anything will do. I think a ceramic tile would be fine. See if a hardware store or tile shop would have a slightly-damaged large tile which they'll give you, maybe.

    Oily makeup removers break down the latex and help it release. It doesn't just fall off, but most prosthetics involve a degree of discomfort.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    It can, so take care. Using an oily makeup remover will help, as these tend to break down the latex. Ideally, you premake an appliance and use a prosthetic adhesive on hair which has been flattened down prior to application. If necessary, then lay hair (or a hairpiece) over the edge to blend in with existing hair.
    This requires a fair bit of skill and expense, and consequently is not covered in a 'Cheap'n'Easy' tutorial.

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    @10AliceSmith18 Hi - you only talc when removing the thing off from the cast or board so the dried latex doesn't stick to itself.
    Ideally you really need tissue paper as it readily absorbs the latex and conforms easily to whatever shape it is placed on. Notebook paper would be too stiff and wouldn't absorb it!
    -Stuart

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    I'm sure that would be ok - especially that a flat board will even work!

  • @stuartbray
    @stuartbray  12 років тому

    Well, the actual item itself will last for years but when applied, the join where it is attached to the skin becomes more obvious as the skin moves more that the piece - hence the blood to help break up the edge.
    Re-sticking it when it lifts will help - make-ups on movies need constant maintenance to look good.

    Remember that prosthetics can only add, not take away. To create an illusion of 'subtraction', you need to create the deepest tissues on the surface of the skin, and build upwards without creating too much bulk.
    Ideally, you want to sculpt a prosthetic or make something like this cheek piece, but with muscle showing. Remember also the new version is a digital model, so anything is possible - there are no physical limitations on a computer generated image.
    -Stuart

  • @stuartbray

The width is not consistent though.

    Of course - although prosthetic gelatine costs more that latex and tissue paper. I guess it depends on how much your latex costs, but prosthetic grade gelatine is usually not dirt cheap. However - if you already have the gelatine but would have to buy latex, then I guess it would cost more for you to do so.

    That is a huge question that I can't fit into the wordcount of this box. Pay goes up with experience and ability but be aware that it is really difficult industry to make a living wage at. Getting a first job is tough, lots of competition and you need to have the right kind of attitude. It is a creative job (so very oversubscribed as it is appealing) but you have to be creative within the industrial environment, time constraints and to the clients desires rather than your own. It is hard!
