I'm a brand new potter trying to figure out my secondhand kiln (nabatherm 45 eco) and yesterday I did my first glost with actual work not test tiles. I got bloat all over the place, and I had no idea how to begin unpicking the problem. I was fairly disappointed. I knew I needed cones but I've never used them or seen them! This video has changed my world this morning - the sadness of a crappy kiln result has disappeared and I know what I need to do! Thanks so much for what probably seemed like a random lockdown video - i really needed a potters advice and you gave it 😊 happy potting!

Your control thermocouple must have moved to be that far out.
Usually if the TC breaks the controller will throw an error message. Sometimes I have a work kiln go weird and it will because the TC has been pushed back into the wall.
They usually are not fixed very rigidly and just rest in position ,especially after numerous cycles.
I use cones/discs and move TC location until the two are fairly close.
But we always put cones/discs or rings in every fire.... they are industrial ceramics in large kilns .Tens of thousands of pounds value so a few quidsworth of widget is well worth it .
The TC is fine - first thing i checked! So it remains a mystery as to why its over firing but solved by programming it 40 degrees under and now its perfect - not many ££££ in my tiny test kiln - luckily 😂
@@JaneScottCeramics I'm having a similar problem in my Cromartie kiln atm. It's massively over firing! So much that one of my kiln shelves exploded! My pots were intact but very bloated. I've ordered some cones, but now after watching this I'm thinking I didn't order enough! So thank you for the wisdom! 😁

So, if understanding this correctly, every cone benga at a different temperature. So, the answer to how much is firing depends on which comes bend. So the ones that don't bend did not reach that temperature? Correct? What do you do with the ones that don't bend?
Chuck the ones that dont bend away. Don’t think you can reuse them. But yes, you are correct in your understanding 👍🏼
Thanks for this very informative video! I have a couple of newbie questions. Did you let that clay fully dry out before firing? Also when testing kiln temp are you firing it empty and of so for how long? Just long enough to reach the temp you set it to or a whole program? Thanks in advance x
I just chuck in the cones in wet clay - they will dry out fine during the first hour of the firing. Always fire the kiln full and to the whole programme. Happy potting!
Can cones be reused?
Help…! I was using cone 6 and my kiln turned off after the 3rd hour during the firing process. The kiln has cool down now, and I would like to know if I need to replace the cones before I restart the kiln again or should I use the same cones that are in my kiln right now?
Mmm this is something i have wondered about - I actually have no idea! I think probably not… but i dont know!
