- The Northwest coast of the Big Island experiences several high wind events each year. Annually winds will gust up to 60mph, and every five to ten years the winds will gust over 80mph.
The March 9, 2010 trade winds, along with the winds ten days before on February 28, were the strongest I personally have seen since 2006.

This is pretty neat to watch.
Why thank you, Nathan!
60 mph *trade winds* is wilddd, not even from a storm. I guess this is why the 2010 La Nina was so very strong, this year currently 4/0/23 its looking like a big el nino is coming for hurricane season so I expect winds to be very calm in hawaii this year
@cyclonejimcom Thanks Jim! It was some consultation for all of 2009.
Yeah, the trade winds always seem to accelerate in the saddle between Mauna Kea and the Kohala mountains. The same thing never happens with the Kona winds, though, so whenever the winds are from the SW there are never any places on the Big Island as windy as northern Oahu.
As for my camera, it's a Panasonic HDC - SD10.
So far its been pretty freekin cool.
thats so cool
@SuperMario3442 That's Hawaii weather for you. Weird thing is the winds were completely still only a mile or so away from where this was filmed.
That looked really cool with he dust coming down the mountain (Kohala?). Nice one! Was really windy in Honolulu but our low mountains gave not as much blocking and downslope effect as you got over there. BTW which camera did you buy?
I like how the wind started up a sandstorm at 0:47
Looks like fun. Should've grabbed a flag or sheet or something to go out and play with.

60 could uproot a 25x25 ft tree, although not common.
To snap at least 80 probably, but that depends on species and such.
